  1. For per diem. I took the job and have been happy since! It took a long time and it is very hard once you are out , you can't get back in. I wish you luck, take small positions and beef up your résumé. It's very hard! I will never leave the acute care setting again!
  2. I had the same problem. It's not bizzare as one poster said. It's real! ive been a nurse since 1995 worked in neonatal ICU left in 2008 after my daughter was born. Never thoght id ever have a problem getting back in with 13 years experience. I never left nursing, I continued to do homecare for pediatrics. I was a school sub nurse and a visiting nurse for peds. When I tried to re enter the hospital setting it was near impossible. I applied everywhere online/ even went outside my zone to all med surg. I got ACLs and PaLs certified.i started applying and got the dreaded email reply you were not a candidate selected. Apparently here is not a nursing shortage. Even with 19 years experience couldn't get in/ eventually I got an interview @gasp@ for a peds float pool position at a not desirable hospital. Long travel time, hospital in financial trouble/ I took it anyway, was thrilled to finally get a foot in: this past December I updtared my résumé and sent it directly to the NM if the hospital I was interested in/ a little luck, she was looking d
  3. I just received a copy of the background check the was done for me prior to my employment. They have dates and times and the names of people they spoke to. It was a little random, as I work a bunch of places as a per diem nurse, and they only checked two. They checked everything from criminal records (of course) social security, traffic violations, even checked my credit! Physicl, drug tests etc... Listen I have nothing to hide and yes they also called me ans said they couldn't verify that I worked a homecare case (I have been working on it 10 years) eventually they got more info and it is done now. After the story of the nurse that had killed 40 plus patients, amd never got caught for years!! He moved from hosptial to Hosptial it is now mandatory and should be. I do believe after seeing my background check that they could have cleared me for the FBI with the info they have. But in today's world and job market I'm lucky to have found a job in an acute setting .
  4. Good Luck!!! Where was the job fair you attended? I hope you got some good contacts!
  5. I think, I would mention right off the top your experience. I have been in many interviews and I know they go right to your experience. I would phrase somewhere in the beginning "I am an RN for x years. I have x years of acute experience in xyz unit for x long."
  6. Does anyone have information/ experience regarding the interview process here? I was called for am interview, called back, and it took more than one week for them to get back to me. I scheduled the interview with the recruiter, and a week before it was canceled by them. He recruiter said the nurse managers were not available that day for the interview. Last week I received another email regarding another position. I responded to the recruiters email as requested with the days and times I was available for the interview. Again I have not received a repsonse. I called 2x and emailed the recruiter. Has anyone had an interview lately with south nassau? I'm wondering why they would email for an interview and not respond after.
  7. It is a very tough market here right now. I'm an experienced nurse for 18 years and have applied everywhere here on LI, had interviews and no job offers. I did eventually get s position for a per diem pediatric unit. If u PM me, maybe we can talk
  8. I have been a nurse 18 years, never left nursing.... I left the hosptial setting in 2008, and continued to do pediatric homecare and school nursing. I applied for jobs in the hospital setting recently, and I was told to take a nurse refresher. Imagine my surprise! I have always been a practicing nurse. I did not take the nurse refresher and luckily , was hired recently for a NICU PICU float position. But it wasn't easy. Ad that's my experience as an RN with 18 years experience. You may eventually have to take that nurse refresher class. I was planning on it, since I wasn't getting hired.
  9. Just an FYI maybe it will help someone find a job. I am an experienced RN, for about 18 years now. Had a real tough time getting back into ANY hospital. Finally landed a job at New York HOsptial of Queens. It is part of the New York Presbyterian health care system. They DO hire new grads, I was on orientation with a few new grads with NO hospital experience. So far, nice hospital to work for. Nurses know their stuff here!
  10. Keep pursuing . Keep sending out resumes while getting whatever experience you are able to. Send send send!!!!thats what I did, eventually I was interviewed and hired
  11. Try New York Hosptial of Queens, part of the NYP health system......they are hiring!
  12. It is really hard to get a job at Winthrop either with or without experience. My advice to you is to also apply to the long island Hosptials nearby to increase your chance of hire.
  13. My own personal experience is this: if you have current acute care experience you will have an easier time finding a job, however, that being said, the market is supersaturated and there can be 100 candidates for one opening. I have been interviewed many times and didn't get hired because of this reason. Get as many certifications as possible such as ACLS and pals and Iv certifications. The market is tough here, but on your side u have a year of great experience, which Hosptials will look for
  14. I am currently considering employment for this hospital. I am studying now for the exams. if anyone has any updated info on the hospital and exams that would be great.
  15. I recently interviewed at the New York Hospital of Queens. My knowledge of this hospital is limited, I have only been there for the interview. does anyone have any work experience there? I would like to know how it is working for the hospital. Also, has anyone taken the pharmacology and dysrhythmia tests prior to working? I need to do that also before employment.
  16. I would, take any suitable job in a hospital that you may find. Right now it's very hard to land a job in a hospital, unfortunately. I would apply to jobs that may interest you, hope to get an interview. After landing a hosptial job it is much easier to transfer to the unit of your choice once you reach the probation period of a hospital. This is what I did, but it was many years ago. I worked med surg for over a year, and transferred to the NICU. I loved that job, but left after my child was born. Now, it's impossible for me to get back into a hospital but that's another story. Apply apply apply! That's my advice. Take any interview you get! If nothing, the interview itself gives you great experience for the next one Good luck!
  17. I work pediatric homecare for a child with a trach/vented, gtube, meds, nebulizers etx...homecare is much different than a hospital setting.. If you were offered the job, I would take it for experience. Jobs are right right now. I can't get back into a hosptial right now. I've been applying everywhere. Here, I make 35 and hour. It is not a Medicaid case but private case which makes more $$ typically. I basically do nursing care in the home setting. Medication administration, etc. it is important to have a good working relAtionshop with the family you are working for. If you have any specific questions post It here and i will be happy to answer!
  18. I actually do pediatric homecare. Private message me and we can talk.
  19. I have applied to post partum, mother baby and general peds. But they all want current or recent within one year of hospital I do have 13 years NICU but it hasnt gotten me anywhere. I'm about to give up. From the boards I can see this is a common problem with nurses .
  20. Have put up some posts recently about my struggle to get back into a hospital setting. I worked 13 years in a hospital most of the time NICU. I currently do homecare, pediatric. I have been applying to hospitals in the New York area. I have landed 2 interviews both for a NICU. I was not hired due to the fact I have been out of the hospital setting for almost 5 years now. I Interviewed and was offered a job for a long term care facility, and it is about 1 hour transit time . I know ill get a lot of slack for this, but I really didn't like the unit at all. It's not somewhere I really would be happy working. Do I take the job in hopes it will help me back into a hospital? I still think hiring managers will not consider this experience since it is Long term. What to do? My major negatives are It's far It's not the kind of unit I would like to work, The pay is just ok (same for my homecare case) Positives are It's a nursing job in a facility Will this kind of job help me back into a hospital?
  21. I would start the job, and mention to your nurse manager you would be interested in days. Sometimes they want you to orient on nights. I wouldn't turn the position down. Start, orient and put yourself on the list to move to days. I did this when I started out. I worked nights maybe 7 months then days. Hope this helps
  22. I have been currently looking for a job in any capacity as an RN/BSN on long island. I have blanketed my resume for any postion that may match my credentials. So far I have landed 3 interviews, and no job offers. I have 10 years current pediatric homecare experience, 13 years previous NICU experience and a year of med/surg. IT is extremely frustrating. I have almost given up hope at this point. I am subbing as a school nurse for the time being, which i like, but will not be able to get a full time postion in. Good Luck to you, I hope you have more success than myself.
  23. They have had layoffs in the past year. If you google it you can see. I would suggest you go to the clinic you are being hired for and see it before you interview. I know the pay at NUMC is not a good as other hospitals.
  24. Thank you all for your comments I bought a jones New York jacket today, with a black skirt , and black and white blouse underneath. The interview is for a long term care children's hospital. The outfit definitely looks polished, I just hope I'm not over doing it.
  25. Hello I am going on an Inteview this week for an RN position. Is a suit/jacket necessary or can you wear neat clean work attire?
