Asperger's Syndrome
My grandson has Asperger's. He will be 5 next month and goes a day or two without speaking, but then will talk about his favorite topic, trucks, non-stop. He did not begin speaking till a little over one year ago, but did not do "baby talk". Just started right in like a 4 year old. He has ADDHD and is hard to control sometimes, but can be a real sweetie too. It is a challenge for his parents, but we are all learning to cope and to do what we can to maximize his enjoyment of life. He has been a computer "nerd" since age 18 months!! I am amazed at his ability there. Guess his brain and the computer think alike while mine is constantly distracted by life. So glad this disorder is being studied.

Fed up of losing working hours
This used to happen to me and, being a Pediatric nurse, sometimes in the summer I got only 18 hours/ week. For some reason I was afraid to float. I finally bit the bullet and got cross-trained into the ER, then learned I was not so stupid after all and made myself available for various units. When managers learned I was "flexible" I had all the work I needed. This gave me the courage to return to school, get another degree and now I am in management. So that first step made a huge difference. This practice of laying off nurses prn makes me think we should ALL be contract nurses and work as independents. But that is another thread.

A nursing diploma vs certificate
nurses earn licenses,not certificates. You may be thinking of the ATT, which is the authorization to test allowing new grads the privilege of sitting for the NCLEX exam. To get the ATT, the nurse must be a graduate of a diploma program, or have earned an associates degree or baccalaureate degree in nursing science. Certificates are sometimes awarded to nursing students who want to work as certified nursing assistants while attending nursing school. But to practice as a nurse you must have a LICENSE and that is given only to people who successfully passed NCLEX-RN. Hope this helps.

Advice Needed
The panel will have read your resume and transcripts so they know how you exist on paper. They want to see if you are confident or childish, smile occasionally or are a grouch, able to communicate and in general seem like someone who would be an asset to their program. Your best bet is to wear conservative clothes and have a few questions about their program. They may ask what are your strengths and weaknesses but don't go into detail about either one. Good luck!

UGH dumb people
walking can cause severe neck injury, not to mention the chance of falling and hurting oneself. The best action is to keep her safe, on the floor and call for help. Sometimes seizures result in the need for resuscitation even if that has never happened before. Families are surprised when the seizures change in pattern and severity, as if they would always act the same way forever. Consider that this time might be different. Glad you were there.

License for compact states
If states are compact you have to declare the state of permanent residence. Then you are granted licensure in both states. If one state is not compact you still have to get two licenses, but will have more paperwork to go thru, as well as more fees.

Crash Course?! Thoughts on RN education
the problem is, your license is generic. You are able to practice any field of nursing. That is good in that you may change directions of your career without having to return to school, as they do in some countries. But the drawback is there is SO MUCH to learn. That is why I personally advocate BSN as entry level to RN. No flames please. It is my opinion, not a demand.

respect for others like yourself only? Aged? Weird? Drunk? Dirty? Co-workers? Look in a thesaurus for words that help define the concept of respect. What behaviors indicate you have respect for someone else?

Glucose Testing Question
Your target numbers coincide with ADA standards. Continue to tell people to get the advice of an MD. They can expect a HgbA1c plus tests for hyperlipidemia and basic metabolic panel. A new dx called metabolic syndrome may be diagnosed when pts have "borderline" values on glucose, lipids etc and are overweight. Byetta is sometimes ordered for this DX to improve carb metabolism. Ketone strips are about $15/bottle at the pharmacy and do not require prescription. They are time-dated, so I only recommend them to Type I's and non-compliant or uncontrolled Type II's. Your key information in a health fair (since you don't get to see them long) is survival information. Continue to preach about it as DM is in epidemic proportions now.

It Seems Like It's Student Nurses vs The Nursing Staff
Nurses are stressed to the max and students add to the stress. What is really amazing is my former students now treat current students that way!!! People are people I guess.

Does your hospital offer a pension?
I have never worked at a hospital with a pension plan. 401k's are offered. Currently my employer offers to contribute a base amount then they match your contribution up to an amount determined by how long you have been employed there. I am at 50% matching now and it really adds up. Also, now that I am over 55 I am able to contribute more tax free dollars to the 401K.

student duties
basically you are practicing being a nurse with someone there to supervise you. So you will answer the call bell, give medications, change dressings and assist or perform other procedures.

people can be so dumb. My niece has a friend who was born and raised in the USA but her parents are from Columbia. They have a latin name. The friend was exempt from taking Spanish in high school because it was assumed she knew the language. WRONG. A friend of mine is from South Africa. She is white, but likes to refer to herself as African-American just to watch reactions. She really is African-American but ---- oh well, the point is beware of stereotyping.

Do the day nurses clash with the night nurses?
When I worked nights I felt that was the strongest shift since we had more limited resources. I believe the conflict results when something (ANYTHING) is left over for the next shift. Somehow the next shift, day or night, feels the previous shift left work just as aggravation. We forget that nursing is a 24 hour job. Some people are under the misconception that patients actually sleep at night. Anyway, in my experience improved communication goes a long way. Also, the people who do the biggest gripping ought to work the other shift to "walk in their shoes".

should i wait for 3 more months?
are you a new grad? If so, have you talked to HR, your supervisor or anyone about why you want to leave? If you are sure you must leave then 3 more months will not make much difference. You did not give enough info for us to really help you. I wish you luck.

Rapid Response Team
Ours is an ICU nurse, respiratory therapist, House Supervisor. 24/7. They carry beepers. When called, only the room number will show so no one has to call back. Just get there! Also, some code numbers for areas other than patient rooms. We feel this team has been responsible for saving lives. Also it has helped other staffers because they learn while watching/assisting the team.

Vent: at a crossroads
sounds like your employer does not really value staff development. That should be a full time role. I would have a heart-to-heart with the CNO. Let him/her know you are conflicted and feel you are spread too thin. Also, it is hard to accomplish dept goals that meet their business plan if you are staffing ( you DO have goals don't you???) I would also get a fix on the salary thing. Either you are, or you are not, salaried. Determine what you want to be, a staffer or an educator, then work towards that. Try to make it sound like YOUR goals can benefit the facility as much as you personally. Good luck.

take the new job. You can still "love the doc" at the hospital. He/she may turn out to be a better friend than employer.

Interview dress code and hair length
dress for the interview, not the job. Most employers are conservative, because they want to be sure you will make a positive impression on the clients and so you will look like you care enough to at least try to "fit in". I think you are on the right track. Good luck! Oh, a smile is the best thing to put on !

IV pumps beeping during report,
Nursing is a 24/7 "job" as far as patients are concerned. Until you are on the floor the patients belong to the previous shift. Even if you were on the floor it would not hurt to be a team player and take care of the patient's needs. Anyway, whoever had the patient prior to you should have realized there was a problem and FIXED it before your shift. Lazy people.

ACLS, PALS and others
It is possible but you may be setting yourself for disappointment. The only pre-req is a current Healthcare Provider CPR card. There is a pre-test. We recommend our staff to make a passing grade on that before attempting the courses. You will not learn the material during the class. You have to know it when you come in. There is a CD with lots of prep work. I do not recommend either course for new nurses but some have taken it and passed. Some who passed regretted it because they put themselves under a lot of stress when it was not required of them.
