Just another note on the personality test...they must be all the rage in HR these days. I've applied to many teaching jobs that required the test and some biology tech jobs. Even a few retail jobs. It's frustrating because you what answer they want and they keep asking you the same questions. It's mostly a blend of being honest with knowing what they want and that's sorta like being in an interview. You need not say what you shouldn't say and say things they want to hear. I mean really...who is going to honestly say that they don't enjoy working with others or only sometimes enjoy it if they want a job. I'm very honest. I've never been accused of sugarcoating, but getting a job isn't an honest process. This goes for the role of the interviewee as well as the interviewer. Gotta have a poker face I guess

The drive does get very tiresome. I drove 40 miles one way to work and also to my school for my first degree. Blowing snow and black ice. gag I can't tell you how many times I fell asleep. Such is rural living. Gas is insane all over. I would pick the job with the shortest drive based on my previous experiences. I don't think this situation is at all uncommon for people of any field living in rural areas. Hang in there. These kind of experiences build character.

Hang in there and come prepared. I remember I walked out of my first college chemistry lab because I was so confused and embarrassed by my mistakes. Definitely talk to your instructors. Sugguest they write instructions on the board or make a handout? You can also talk to your school directly. They normally have a place that deals with student learning needs. If your instructors won't teach in a coherant fashion perhaps they can do something.

I can only speak from the visitor/patient prospective atm....Those alarms do get annoying but I would never touch anything. When you are in a medical facility it is just expect that you will hear things such as alarms. Some people are so arrogant. I'm glad it wasn't anything fatal. I would have been so dumbfounded when she told me she silenced the alarm. I don't know how you stopped your eyes from jumping out of your head. I guess it comes with experience.

Just stay positive. I hear you about the chai tea. I do the same with green tea and iced coffee. Give your little ones big hugs when they wake up tomorrow. Steal it if you have to. Good luck.

I'm very sorry that you've had such a trying experience. Finding child care is a big problem and can mean the difference between staying at home or working for a mother. Unfortunately, most of us do not have the option to stay home regardless of the aid available. I do not have children but I know my mother struggled to find child care for my brother and I. Dogs are good listeners aren't they? I've cried many a time to my cat or dog but it just isn't the same as a human response. I really empathize with your struggle. Did you say there are three daycares with the hours you work? Maybe try the third. Perhaps I read that wrong. Can you be put on the waiting list for the full one? Is that an option? I dunno. I really wish I could help you. But as CapeCodDreamer said at least your work gave you a chance to come back. Daycare is going to be a hard adjustment for your child but they get used to it. It isn't uncommon for kids to cry so I don't know what that lady's problem was. I'm very sorry. Please don't give up. Fight for this job and if it doesn't work then it wasn't meant to be. We all have our flaws, but if you are clean and look professionaly dressed, who cares? I don't. I don't think most patients really will as long as they are getting proper care. Half the time I'm visually at my worst when I enter a hospital. Sweats, messy hair, old t-shirt. Once I ended up in the ER in torn pajamas. My point is that the patients come in looking all kinds of crazy and all they want is to have their problem fixed. However, I will say that I know studies have been done on appearance and interviews. Yes, more attractive people score more points, but there won't be many actors applying for the same jobs as you. Secondly, they want an employee that will do their job well and has valuable skills to bring to the team not someone they'd want to date. Just dress for success in the interview and smile. Holding your head up and smiling is one of the most attractive things in the world because it says I have confidence. Lastly, if there are things you don't like about your appearance (weight for example) that you can changes. Work on it. It will make you feel better because you know you are living a healthy life style/taking care of yourself. You'll also feel better in your skin and stronger.

Thank you for your very detailed response. I didn't realize there were so many admission processes. Hopefully, I can dress up my flaws some how. If anyone else has any experience with having failing grades in non-prereq courses and BSN/ABSN, I would appreciate your input. I'm pretty sure I could get into ASN programs but I'd rather go straight for the BSN. I'd rather not waste anymore time than necessary. I won't be apply for nursing school until next year summer and will talk to my desired schools prior to applying.

I think everyone should have access to affordable health care but I also think I should eat without gaining weight. There are ideals and then there are realities. Unfortunately, politics plays on the ideals. I wouldn't mind paying so everyone could get free or equal care but that would mean cutting from somewhere else. It isn't an easy fix and no side has the answer. There are just too many variables. I am from a depressed rural community and worked as an urban teacher, I know first hand what dependence to governmental assistance does to people. It can help but others just come to depend on it for everything. Why work to pay for food when you get money? Why work to get insurance when you'll get it for free? Then people on the bubble trying to get by, trying to pay for school, etc etc cannot. Aid is great but easily abused. Especially by my alcoholic neighbors that can roof their house in August but can't work a job.

I'm more of a liberal, but don't really align with one party. Politicians all have their own agendas. I used to be more conservative but I cannot support a party that denies loving consenting adults from getting married or anyone having a say over their own bodies. Plus, I am not religious/am a bit antireligious and that clashes with the conservative views. Or at least that's what Rachel Maddow tells me. lol

I'm not a nursing student yet and I'm just doing my research. I want to learn more about the different nursing specialties/ways to be a nurse but don't enough lifetimes to spend reading every article under each specialty soooo... Are there any good links/videos/books/methods of discovery that would help learn about nursing specialties? I know I'm several years away from clinicals. I also plan on volunteering and getting my CNA after I move next month, but there is there anything else I can do? Second, did/how did you decide your specialty or did you just go where you were needed? :hug: Thanks bunches. Sorry if this is in the wrong part of the forum.

I graduated May 2010 with a degree in biology with teacher certification. I taught and didn't like it. I wanted to be a doctor/psychiatrist but new I needed a back-up so I wanted to go the premed route but pick up teaching certification at the same time. Somewhere along the line I lost sight of my pre med dreams and settled for a degree everyone told me do and for some of the very same reasons people are now running to nursing. "They always need teachers" "There is a shortage of science teachers" Then the recession hit but I was in the sheltered world of college so I was naive. The year I graduate, Illinois takes science off the shortage area list. I searched for a year to find a job but started thinking about going back for a nursing degree. In high school, I shadowed nurses at the community nursing home and I knew it was something I could do. I've always wanted people improve the lives of others. I love people and have great patience with difficult ones. I'm just not a manager. I don't like struggling to entertain 90+ teens and moderate their every move. So after two years of thinking about nursing seriously, I've decided to make my move. Yes it will be stressful. The job market is weak. The health care system is just as damaged as education. I will have unruly patients, but medicine is whatI'm interested in and not what someone suggested/for the big bucks/job security. Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't work if I didn't need money. I would just be a hippie or a plush housewife that volunteers and does pilates. It's just that amount doesn't matter to me (no kids, no house, no pets) and bf is in a phd program. I just want to be happy. Plus, I also know that nursing equate big money. All I want is a shot and I'm willing to work three jobs and live on ramen to get it. This board is a great resource, albeit a little disheartening. I know some is factual but the pessimism is a downer. There are some of us have our hearts in the right place even if we have bowls to fill and (like teaching) not all of us will/should stay. Same goes for some of the "old pros" The college is a must for success and nursing shortage propaganda machines hold blame for some of it.

I already had micro but just wanted to wish you luck. Like a lot of bio classes micro is a bunch of memorization. I know it sounds silly but to remember certain pathways I made stories. I know it's morbid but I remember how HIV infects cells because I made an association with rape. It worked and I was actually teaching it to other classmates. Look up study techniques now if you struggle with that. If you do the old notebook and pen method, take notes with different color pens/pencils whatever because it will help things pop.
