Flu Shot Time!

I'm counting calories on MyFitnessPal.com and it's free. You can download an app on your phone. Then you can scan the foods you are eating. It seems to be helping keep in calories in check. I just started so I'll update you on any weight loss later.

I am in the Masters program for Nurse educator at the college of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati. The program I am in is a blended program with some classes on campus (4) and some on-line (6). This is my first experience with distance learning. We take two classes at a time. With the discussion questions on Blackboard, papers, readings, quizzes, etc. and trying to work full time it can be a challenge. I find it more time consuming than the BSN program I was in. For those 10 weeks you pretty much work, sleep, study. I finished my first semester in Nov. and an getting ready to start my second. I guess it didn't help much that one of the first classes was Biostatistics which I dreaded the most. I'm thankful that that's over and am looking forward to starting again now that I have the routine down and understand distance learning better. If you are up to the challenge, it can be rewarding. I did well in both my classes and it made me feel good that I was able to do it. If it's what you want to do, I say, go for it. I'm 56 and I did.

In 1976 I was 20 years old when I graduated with my ADN. Many of my classmates were also my age. That is how it was back then. You went from high school right into college. There wasn't a waiting list to get into nursing school. I think it's great and you will do well. Now I am 56 and working on my MSN in Nursing Education. Many people think I'm too old and need to think about retiring. I just want to teach the new nurses who will be replacing my generation when we all decide to retire.

Now which theory on diversity is this?

Due to productivity, one of you are going to have to be overstaffed.

I recently (in the past 3 weeks) started school to get my Masters of Nursing in Nursing Education. That's what we need to teach. Some of the colleges allow you to have a BSN to do clinicals but not to teach in a class room.

I am really sad about the comment of just an RN. I worked with my ADN for 34 years and I flll like I was an RN not just an RN. Since then I got my BSN and will starting school in Sept for my MSN. I believe that you should go for your BSN. Please don't think that a nurse with her ADN is "just a nurse". Many great RN's out their work with a ADN.

We are put on-call and paid on-call pay. You have 45 mins to get to work once they call you and you can be called in anytime during that shift. We take turns and your over-staffed day is written in a book.

I'm am an older nurse who has been the profession for 36 years. Five years ago I went back to school and got my BSN. Now I am applying to get into an MSN program. I am a clinical coach on my unit (orients new employees) and was a Super User when Epic was started at my hospital. Any nurse has to prove to the manager that they valuable to the unit reguardless of their age. As for older nurses being resistant to change, change has always been a part of nursing. Documentation, ways we do clinical care, the way we dress, and many other aspects have changed over the years. Older nurses are adaptable because they are use to change. My advise to older nurses is to hang in there, learn all that you can, and make yourself useful to your unit. The patients and the newer staff need your wisdom.

Go for the BSN! Most hospitals are pushing for their RN's to get it. I went back to school after being out for over 30 years and got my BSN. Now I am applying to get into an MSN program for Nursing Education.

I have been feeling that way lately with working extra for EPIC.

W e have had this year an increase in pregnant addicted patients on our High Risk OB unit. They are using Methodone to treat them for there addiction. They state for a few days until they can be placed into a treatment center. I don't know if any of the drugs stated in previous posts are better or if they are used during pregnancy.

We have patients that have had fetal surgery at the Children's Hospital in our city. Other than that we have any patient who is pregnant with an pregnancy issue or an medical issue. They just need to be pregnant to be on our unit. Some of our patients are with us maybe 24 hours and others can be there for months.

Once I had the father of the baby say that since her water broke maybe the swelling in her feet would get better. lol

I work on a High risk pregnancy unit in a large hospital that does over 7,000 delivieries a year. Our unit has 30 beds and we have patients from all over the TriState area due to our Level 3 NBICU. I was wondering if any of you work on a High risk pregnancy unit. I know in a lot of hospitals the high-risk pregnant patients are in L/D.

With electronic documentation CNA's should be able to chart vital signs and basic patient care. RN's are able to view their documentation. The person doing the care should be the one documenting it.

We don't run Insulin with it. We do start another line for that.

We don't run two mainline IV's to infuse Mag. We also piggyback our antibiotics into the mainline with the Mag and infuse then together. This works if the antibiotic is compatible with the Mag.
