Psych nurses being forced to float to med surg and tele?
Wow, thank you for all the replies. To answer some of your questions, we have no union. Our entire unit had a meeting amongst ourselves to discuss this and try to get on the same page. We all agree that it is not enough training and will not be safe. No one has any desire to learn or be trained for other floors. We had a meeting with our manager to discuss our concerns and it did not go very well. We were told 3-4 days should be plenty because we are experienced nurses (psych nurses 😤) and that if we don't like what will be required of us we don't have to work here anymore. They will float anyone getting overtime first, then per diem, part time, and full time. We only had 2 per diem nurses who put in their notice after the meeting, it is mostly full time people on our floor so we should get floated evenly. This seems hopeless.

Psych nurses being forced to float to med surg and tele?
Except for one nurse, Our entire unit has only ever worked in psych our entire careers. If I had any desire to work med surg I feel I would need an entire new grad type orientation. I have not been on a med surg floor since school.

Psych nurses being forced to float to med surg and tele?
I have zero desire to ever work med surg. I think I would rather work a lower paid non nursing job than have to work med surg.

Psych nurses being forced to float to med surg and tele?
I think the only thing we can do is look for new jobs, which almost everyone is. This just seems like an awful idea.

Psych nurses being forced to float to med surg and tele?
They will give us 3-4 days of orientation and expect us to take a full patient load.

Psych nurses being forced to float to med surg and tele?
Hello, I am wondering if any of you fellow psych nurses are being forced to float to med surg or telemetry? My hospital will be starting this soon and we are not happy about it. I have never heard of other hospitals making psych nurses float and am wondering how common this is?

Late for work excuses
I used to live in a terrible neighborhood. I got stuck in my house because there was a dead body along with the coroner van and tons of police blocking my driveway. My boss didn't believe me when and told me to stop making excuses. It was on the news later and they ended up apologizing to me later.

Help covering tattoos?
I have a chest piece that goes above my collar bone and I always find long sleeve shirts that go up high enough at forever 21. Forever 21 has the best long sleeve shirts, but sometimes target has the long sleeve merits brand that works too. And both stores are cheap. Whenever I buy them, I stock up and will get 15-20 at once because they don't carry them all the time.

first RN paycheck?
I took 500 out and went on a shopping spree for badly needed new clothes for myself, and paid off a credit card.

Bombed my first interview!!
I bombed my first Rn interview too. I think just the fact that I already screwed one up made me feel like I would do better in the next one, at least it can't get any worse. I did fine with my other later interviews. The thing that tripped me up was jumping to immediately answer questions when I should have taken a second to get my thoughts straight. Don't hesitate to tell the interviewer, hmm give me to think about that if they ask you something your not sure about.

Just Starting this Journey
Yes, I agree with everyone else. If you spend your time going through all of the material they provide, you will never get done. Take the PA, then study your weak points and take the OA when you are ready. If the class just had tasks to do, just jump right in and do them, especially biochem! You will figure out what you need to know along the way.

I completed my BSN today. Feel free to ask any questions
How much do they prorate the tuition if you have less than 12 units a semester? It's looking like I may finish partway into my second semester.

Worried about algebra
I also got the algebra class waived because of my Rn license. I did have to take statistics, which almost prevented me from signing up to the program. I can do dosage calculations all day, but when it comes to normal math I'm totally lost and useless. I am a anxious mess with math. The statistics course is mostly definitions and concepts. The most math I had to do was adding and dividing to find mean and medians. If I can do it, anyone can!

How many of you actually enjoy your job?!
I like my job the majority of the time. I love my speciality, love my coworkers, like my patients, and usually can't stand their family members. There are always good days and bad days, but most of the time I like my job.

weekend work Harder?
No, weekends are way easier because management and ancillary staff Is not there. Also, the phone barely rings on the weekend.

Area of nursing with the least amount of vomit?
That's so funny! When my cats vomit and I am at home alone I will also cover it with something and wait for my husband to come home. When we had a dog, I attempted to clean up its vomit once but instead accidentally vomited on top of it. I ended up covering both piles with a towel and waited for my husband to come home. I thought my husband was going to kill me, lol.

Area of nursing with the least amount of vomit?
Psych does not have vomiting very often. The only time I saw it was when it was the pt was intentionally making herself vomit on the floor for attention. I have a vomit phobia too, I also vomited on the floor as I was running away when I saw it. Oh well. If you have no shame and don't mind vomiting in front of co workers / pts when you see vomit, nursing is doable. Just get through nursing school and then you don't have to deal with it so often.

No 1:1 sitter for fall risk patient
We run into this problem at my work pretty often, and I also wonder how to document. Often we are so short that there is no charge, no Cna on the floor, and we will have one 1:1 when there are 3 pts that need 1:1s. We try to move all the 1:1 pts so they can share a room, but that only works when they are the same sex, or until one walks out of the room. I don't understand why we are so short all the time.

Shadow People/ghosts at work
I don't know what they are, but I saw one at the hospital I work at. Half of the staff has seen it at one point or another.
-
for those who work 12 hour shifts, how long is your lunch break?
It's supposed to be 30 minutes unpaid. I usually get 15 if I'm lucky before I get interrupted or have to get up to do something.

do you wash your hair every day?
I have to wash my hair everyday or it gets so greasy that it looks like I have not washed it in a week. I am jealous of these people who can get away with washing it less often.
