Feeling really bummed and lost
I have completed 2 years of nursing school with all A's and B's. However, I am unable to pass the exit HESI and unable to graduate and sit for the NLCEX. I have taken the HESI 6 times and have scored between 805-830 until this last time. I score an embarrassing 695. I am not sure what happened or where to go from here. I need to have at least an 850 to graduate. This totally stinks! I am now left with too much school debt and no degree. What does one do from here?

New Job as Nurse Extern
Congrats! I am also a Nurse Extern. I work as a PCT and a Unit Secretary. I have learned a lot in the past 6 months. I plan on working at this hospital after I pass the NCLEX in June. My only suggestion is to learn to go with the flow. I am learning this as I type. lol! Also, be a sponge and soak it all in. Ask questions, I have found that most nurses who know that you are going to nursing school are awesome at showing you things or taking the extra minute to explain things to you.

Can I Work as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant While in School?

Scrubs cost WHAT???
We had to buy ours from Dove. If I remember correctly for 1 top and 1 bottoms it was $53.00. That included all embroidery and shipping. A lab coat is optional. If we want to wear a shirt under it has to be any plain white shirt. Did you ever find out why an apron?

Clinicals start Monday
I survived my first day of clinicals. YAY!!! The nurse I was assigned to never even said "Boo" to me. I never once spoke to her. When I introduced myself she said hello and then I never saw her again. The one and only patient I was assigned to was either asleep or in CT. So I spent my day doing VS, changing bedding and giving baths for anyone who would let me. I learned a lot and thankfully my instructor noticed that even though I had no instructione from my nurse that I didn't just stand around doing nothing. Today we got to observe at a dyalisis clinic. That was amazing. I learned so much today and never touched a patient. The staff at this clinic welcomed us with open arms and explained everything they were doing and encouraged questions. It was fantastic! Tomorrow is lecture, it will be so boring after the past 2 days. lol!!!

Non accredited school
All the job posting that I see in my area say nothing about school, they say "FL Licensed Registered Nurse". Doesn't say anything about an AS degree or BS degree. Sometimes they require at least one year hospital experience. I was told by my school that our clinical hours many times can be used as hospital experience when applying for a job. Bottom line: The way I understand it is, as long as you are able to sit for your State Boards after you graduate from your school you should be able to find a job. Good luck!

Who were you in high school
I was involved in everything....I was in Student Council, the mascot for our football team (I didn't have enough time to attend cheerleading practice), SADD President, Exchangettes member, Peer Counseling are the things I can think of off the top of my head. I was friends with everyone (because I wanted to be voted into Student Council, lol). I had a phone connected to my ear whenever I was home (this was before cell phones). I was a social butterfly. Never missed a football game, pep rally or party. I was voted most spirited of my class. I had a GREAT time in high school. Academics were not my focus though. I was a boy crazy fool too! c/o '86 rocks :) Go Bengals!

Clinicals start Monday
Happy New Year everyone..... I just wanted to share that I start clinicals on Monday, Jan 7 and I am nervous and excited at the same time. I have done very well in school so far, I really hope I don't freeze in the clinical setting. I am ready to absorb all I can and pray that I am assigned to a nurse that likes to educate student nurses.

Appearance?
I can only speak for my nursing school and we are not allowed to have any tattoos showing. They must be covered. We also have to have our hair colored in a natural hair color, pulled off the face. We have a lab uniform and a clinical uniform that we are required to wear. While in uniform we can only have one pair of stud earrings on and one ring on. No necklaces or bracelets. Our dress code is very strict. You may want to double check with your school about their dress code. I also know that most of the medical settings in my area (The Florida Big Bend) is very conservative. Good luck in school!

Normal nursing grades..
In my school a C is failing. You have to have at least an 80% (B) to move on to the next class. Most students are high B's. Good luck to you. Just remember to do the best you can do! :)

It's getting real!

I did a dumb thing today and learned a lesson
That is a bit harsh don't you think? I am fully aware that everyone talks to everyone in my school. There is no number to be had. What I guess I left out of the first post was I was NOT offended by his language it was the way he was acting and has acted when he was grading our exams in front of us. He was making snide comments. He would also have little tantrums in class during lectures. UPDATE: The day after the disagreement, the instructor ask to speak to me and he apologized to me for the way he acted during both quarters that I had him. (He also apologized to other students as well). I too apologized for my actions. He told me that the nursing instructors as a whole talked about me and the situation and everyone agreed that I should stay in school and that we all learn from this unfortunate experience. Fortunately, I have not had any bad reactions from anyone. The instructor and I hugged it out. We agree to leave it in the past and move on. So as I said earlier, I did learn from this experience. I ended my quarter with 2 A's and 2 B's, so I am still doing very well in school.

I did a dumb thing today and learned a lesson
This instructor was told/asked to not continually use that language. What he would do is use foul langauage and then agree that he knows it bothers us. Still I agree that it does not make what I did any better.

Fundamrntals HESI
I made a 877 on my Fundamental HESI. Our school wants a 850. We were told to study a HESI NCLEX-RN Examination book. It helped me a little, but we are fortunate we get some HESI styled questions on our tests. I am not sure what books your school uses, but we a lot of books from Elsevier and they have wonderful companion help that goes along with our textbooks. We were told in our school that every time you take the HESI you will get better. I am going to start practicing my HESI stuff for at least 15-20 minutes a day just to become for comfortable with all the material. Good luck and keep study, I am sure you will be just fine. :)

I did a dumb thing today and learned a lesson
Thank you MedChica and everyone for your words. I have given what happen yesterday A LOT of thought. I am going to use this as a lesson. I am by far a meek and mild girl. But I do need to learn the art of keeping my mouth shut and picking my battles better. I am going to back to school today with my head held high and my mouth shut. lol!!! Let me say that I have NO other issues with any other staff at my school. I am on the Dean's List (until this quarter) and I have perfect attendance. I am in my 3rd quarter out of 9. I start clinicals next month, so the real work is just beginning.

I did a dumb thing today and learned a lesson
I confronted one of my instructors today. I was NOT very tactful in the way I handled myself. I have been bothered/annoyed by this instructor for 2 quarters now and today was our final. I received my grade and when most of the class was out of the room, I went up to him and told him he was unprofessional and a few other things. He stood up and looked down at me and told me if I didn't like it I could ******* leave. To say I was very angry is not near how angry I was. I left the classroom and headed straight to the Director's office. In tears, I tried to recollect what happened in the classroom just minutes before. The Director assured me that any foul language would not be tolerated and he would speak to a few of my classmates and to the instructor. I was then told by a fellow student that if I continued to act the way I did, that I would not make a very good nurse. That I needed to learn to keep my mouth shut and my head on straight. This upset me because this is a student that I have great respect for. So after crying my eyes out and trying to figure out if I should continue, take a quarter off or just quit, I reached out to that student and talked a bit to her. She still says that I was at fault and that I should not speak out. I do agree that I should have chosen different words and not been so defensive when talking to the instructor, but I am so mad. This instructor takes pleasure in dropping F bombs in class OFTEN! I think he does it for the reaction. I just felt like I had had enough. I ended with a B in his class and I learned nothing about the subject that he taught. If you are still reading thanks. I really needed to vent. I am staying in school and I am going to use this as a teaching lesson and just keep my mouth shut. Telling the instructor how I feel will get me no where.

Anyone Else Accepted 2 ITT Tech's Breckinridge School of Nursing Fall 2012
Nothing to be nervous about. If you just go to class, take notes and stay interested you should do fine. All the instructors seem to be very friendly and available to assist when needed. Good luck and welcome...... PS. Get involved in the Scrub Club, it is the Nursing Club on campus.

What do you think about the media portrayal of nursing?
I just went the Truthaboutnursing.com website and I have to be honest that I think that I have never thought that much about how nurses are being protrayed in tv shows or commercials. I am not at all offended by the 'naughty nurse' costumes or the tv shows or commercials. I really think that we need to just relax and lighten up. Laugh a little. I think just about every profession out their can be made fun of or down played or belittled or whatever term you want to put on it. I for one love to look at a HOT fireman. Does that mean that I think they spend all their time working out and posing for calendars or only saving the hot damsel in distress absolutely not. In fact, I am not a fireman and I can't honestly tell you what they do at their jobs as I am not doing their job. Same goes for Librarians, teachers, police officers, pilots just to name a few. I am learning everyday what the truth about nursing is and it is not about joining a writing campaign or bashing television/ad campaigns to demand people to think that my chosen profession is more respectable than they think it is. The important thing is is are you happy in your career choice? Are you all you can be and are you respecting yourself and others?

Are you able to see tests after grading?
We can meet with our instructor one on one to see our exam/quizzes. I don't like it either. I want to see what I missed and have time to review what I missed to learn from my mistakes. I think they (the school) are afraid that the tests will get out and passed around. I understand that concept, but I really wish there was a way I could learn from my mistakes easier.
