  1. Hello everyone.... I am also living here in Jacksonville Florida and I really like it. I work at Shands Hosp in the Renal Clinic and I really enjoy working Mon-Fri no weekends and no holidays. I relocated here from Indianapolis Indiana and I have really enjoyed the weather since I have been here...Goodluck with what ever you decide and with your move TowannaRN
  2. Thanks for the reply...I was saying that it is a Renal Clinic like a doctors office except it is part of a big hospital.
  3. I believe that everything will work out just fine. The DUI is over 15 years old. And as far as the second situation that is understandable. I would be more worried if that event didn't bother you at all. I am wishing you the best and goodluck with your move. Towanna RN
  4. I just got hired at a Renal Clinic at first I thought it was in dialysis but it is not. It is a M-F with no weekends, holidays, and no on-call. I am so excited. I have been looking for a position like this. I have been working for the past 8 years in LTC and I am looking for any advice as to is there anything that I need to brush up on? I have been told that I will have to obtain an ACLS Certification and Chemotherapy Certification. I have six months to complete obtain them. Are those classes hard? Thanks in Advance for any advice. Towanna RN
  5. I have just been hired at a Renal Clinic and I was told that I can wear any colored scrub I want. Towanna RN
  6. Thanks for the advice....I think that I will except a PRN positon to get my feet wet..
  7. Hello everyone, I am wanting to ask a question about mental health nursing. I have been offered a chance to work with mental health patients as a charge nurse on a 10 bed unit. I will be the only nurse and have two mental health techs. It is a new stabilization unit. I have no psych experience except for the few resident that you get in LTC with behaviors. I am wanting to know if it is hard to work with mental health patients. I know that the facility provides training and a 5 day floor orientation. Although I will be the only nurse on the unit, I will not be the only nurse in the facility there is another unit with 3 nurses. I also have the option to take a PRN position but I will not be eligible for benefits. I was going to take the PRN position and get a feel for it and then take the charge position but there is no garantee that it will be available. I can work days or nights doing the charge nurse positon....what do you guys think? Oh yeah the pay for the charge nurse position is 19.59/hr for days and 23.59/hr for nights. The PRN is at 24/hr with extra for shift diffs. Keep in mind I have no experience but is that the right pay for a position like that. I live in Florida. Towanna:uhoh21:

So far it seems that you can wear any color.
  9. First off let me say that those types of comments are awful. I am a RN and I would never make a comment like that. As a matter of fact I have a sister who is a LPN and a very good nurse. I believe that as stated earlier all our positions compliment each others. I get very offended when I hear someone say "I am just a LPN" or "She is just a CNA" and so forth. I am a RN with an Associate Degree. And let me tell you the BSN nurses are quick to let you know that they have a BSN and what trips me out is that we learned the same things except my classes were harder and compact. When I was in school I heard BSN students say the the ASN program was to hard and intense because we had to learn things faster and every thing was together. I am happy to be a nurse and that is what I feel we all are nurses and should be proud. The only difference is our paychecks.
  10. well as of today I still haven't heard a word on my permanent nursing license but as stated earlier I recieved my temporary on 1-6-05.
  11. The facility I left in Indy did understaff alot and boy did it piss my off. I have went on several interviews since moving to Florida and let me tell you...They can not be understaffed or they will get dinged. I was very happy to here that but I did not know of the new law here in Florida till I went to a couple of interviews and found out. That was a perk in itself.
  12. There is a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida called Shands and they start new grads base pay at $21.17/hr.
  13. Yes I think that it is okay to have a beard, mustache, if neatly trimmed and well maintained.... Towanna
  14. I am sorry ladies and gentlemen but I think that a t-shirt should be worn by men if they have excessive chest hair that will show thru a v-neck scrub top. I also think that women should wear a t-shirt if they are full busted as to not flash everyone they encounter...lol Towanna
  15. I Would Like To Know What The Paper Stated That You Had To Sign?

Yes thanks for the reply about Shands Hospital...its a funny thing...I had an interview today at Shands Hosp...the position is at a clinic..no weekends, no holidays and great benefits. It is not the ICU but it is a start to getting back to the Hospital....I am very strongly considering accepting the position...Thanks again and goodluck everyone..
  17. In Indiana I made $20/hr as a new RN and after 2 years made $25/hr but of course I was the MDS Coordinator. I am now in Florida and was just offered a job making $20/hr which is a cut but I am going to be a staff RN...which is not too bad but I am use to making a certain amount of money bi-weekly. TowannaG RN
  18. I just moved to Jacksonville, Fl from Indpls, In on Dec 18th. I am liking Jax alot. I am a RN. I have worked in LTC for the past 7 yrs. I am just now starting to look for a job. I would like to get back in the Hospital. Anyone with any good advice would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance TowannaG RN
  19. Hello I am new to Jacksonville, Florida and I have just interviewed with a Longterm Care Facility and the pay for a RN with 2yrs RN experience is $20/hr base pay. On the weekend there is an extra $2/hr and if you work nights the diff is another $2/hr. That is actually in the competitive with pay in Indiana for a staff RN in LTC. Of course if you are management pay is much higher. I was a MDS Coordinator in Indiana but I just want a staff position for right now.
  20. Hey everyone....I just want to say that I have recieved my Temporary Florida License in the mail today 1-6-05. I mailed my application from Indiana on 12-15-04. I am happy to say that I have had a positive experience as well. I am now in full pursuit of my first nursing job in Florida. I have applied to several different types of places but my real concern is that I need some very good medical benefits and a decent wage. Does anyone know of a good place to work that offers good medical benefits and decent wage? I would really appreciate to hear from someone. Thanks in Advance TowannaG RN

Hey... I just relocated to Jacksonville, Florida from Indianapolis, Indiana. First off let me tell you I love the weather. I personally like being here so far. I just moved down on DEC 19th. I am sorry for I cannot tell you anything about good places to work. I am looking to get in an ICU program myself. I have been doing LTC for the past 7 yrs and looking forward to getting back to the hospital. Goodluck TowannaG RN
  22. You already have plenty of experience to be an MDS Coordinator. I would call around to all the LTC facilities in my area and inquire about the need for a MDS Coordinator and those needing one I would send my resume. I am an MDS Coordinator and I have found that many facilities are in need of good MDS Coordinators and would grab you up in a minute. I don't think you will have any problems getting a job in LTC for the position that you inquired about MDS Coordinator, ADON, or DON. Goodluck Towanna RN
  23. I recieved a postcard with confirmation that they have recieved my application and to give them 30 days to process it before I called with any questions. I mailed my application from Indiana on DEC 15th and I recieved my postcard with the post mark on DEC 22nd. I guess I will begin my 30 day count down from the 22nd of Dec. I was excited to recieve some type of notice. I hope I too recieve a temp work permit before the entire 30 days are up...I am hopeing within the next couple of weeks...I am praying...... Towanna
  24. Hello all....I am an RN that just relocated to Jacksonville Florida from Indianapolis Indiana. I have worked in a LTC facility for the past 4 years. I am seeking employment as we speak in Florida as well as wait on my license to work in Florida. Anyways...I started off as a staff RN and worked the floor on 1st shift at that time I made $20/hr as time went on I became the MDS coordinator and pay increase to $25/hr which was okay because I was entry level and just beginning...I figured I'd get some experience in doing MDS's. Well MDS Coordinators with no experience in Indiana start off around $30/hr so of course I was being jipped from the start but what was really bad, I had to work every other weekend on the floor and every time a nurse called off..I was pulled to work the floor which kept me behind in my work. I am a hands on nurse and I love being around and laughing with the residents. I did not like being the MDS Coordinator at all. I have put in several apps at LTC facilities here in Florida and I am applying for a STAFF RN position. I have been reading that the pay here is lower..I have not been on any interviews yet but I will be finding out soon. I would like to know if anyone is from Jacksonville, Florida who knows the pay rate for RN's in LTC. Thanks in Advance Towanna RN
  25. In Indianapolis a RN made 25 an hour and the LPN made 20 an hour. It was mainly staffed by LPN's and the RN's had a supervisory position. I was the second shift supervisor. I loved working in correction but I could not work second shift because of my children. I waited it out 7 months though but decided to leave because everyone loved there jobs and no one was thinking about leaving...I wanted a day shift position. TowannaG
