Hey Srercg, I totally get what you are saying. Im kinda new too and consider myself to be more like A nurse than B nurse. I seen many older nurses turn out that way and it also depends on personality too. I do not believe education has anything to do with it. I hope and pray no matter how old of a nurse I get I never turn out like B nurse.

Hi celene, I have a couple of questions? Is the program adult learner, working nurse friendly? How long did it take you to finish the program? Also, are there tests, quizzes, and papers? A combination of all three, one out of the three dominating the coursework, or only one of the three such as papers dominating the coursework? Is is easy to get help or tutoring? My final question if you don't answer anything else is how were you able to complete clinical? Thanks!

I am in the process of looking for online RN to BSN schools as well. I am not familiar with University of Phoenix's program, even though I have heard of the school. There are many concerns I have and they are: is the school accredited; are they recognized by potential employers; are they recognized by other schools (in case you are looking to further your degree in the future)? I went to a nursing career fair over a year ago. One nurse approached me to ask what school I attended. She warned me to not go to an online school that is strictly online. She is on the hiring committee and her place of employment do not recognize certain schools as proper or thorough education. Some things you may have to consider if you are seriously thinking about Phoenix or other online schools.

I keep reading throughout ALL NURSES about brain sheets. I need an example or examples of a good brain sheet.

I am sorry you were let go from orientation. I appreciate you sharing your personal story. I always feel that sometimes it is warranted so others who are naive can learn from your mistakes. Hi All! In a recent lecture, some of our instructors shared their stories about being a new grad, what to expect, finding a job, confidence, specializing, etc. A student asked them what THEY would be looking for in a new grad? After some initial discussion one of the instructors said that some new nurses or nurses that are new to their facility are not able to make it out of orientation. I was shocked! I need to know further what would constitute a nurse not being able to make it out of orientation? Besides, they passed boards and the interview, right??

What is blacklisting?

We have always been taught to document everything during your care. There is no such thing as too much to documentation. However, I believe the instructor was implying to keep your own record as well. I'm assuming if something adverse or suspicious happened during your care. Like the above post mentioned to keep a work journal. Regardless, I just want to make sure I'm doing the best practice and clarify misunderstandings before I get myself out there.

That is great that a hospital having Magnet encompasses those attributes. I'm hoping those attributes are at my facility when they acquire Magnet recognition. Currently, they have the opposite of what you describe.

Thanks for your response, Klone. From what I know having Magnet status means a certain percentage of nurses have a BSN. In my opinion BSN do not improve quality of the nurses, just limit most ADN from obtaining employment in acute care facilities. I know that is another issue. You made a statement about Magnet recognition is a statement of high satisfaction among staff and being in a great place to work. Is satisfaction with the staff only contigent upon a nurse having at least a BSN?

I do not believe it is private medical information. I believe she made notes on the care she gave to the patient. I believe if doctors orders were not carried out or medications not given based on her critical thinking skills she wrote personal noted for her own record. From reading the responses I need to get in contact with the instructor for further clarification.

In my area, which is MD/DC/VA area, there are many hospitals that are Magnet. Of the few hospitals that are not Magnet, they are pushing for it by the end of this decade. As a nursing student, I have been asked very confusing questions from patients, friends, family, and acquaintences about nursing. Many do not have a clue about the various degrees, education preparation, salaries, and job descriptions of this broad nursing field. I am currently in a ADN program. While in conversations with these people I had to explain to them that I will be an RN when I finish school and pass boards. However, I need to get my Bachelor's degree in nursing if I am to remain marketable and employable because of all hospitals pursuing Magnet status. I always get a dumb-founded look or a confused response. The most common response is, "So, will you be a RN, LPN, or a CNA?" My response is an ADN nurse and BSN nurse are both RNs. The difference is the BSN nurse took additional classes. Regardless, I can get the same above question or worse, like, "why not go for your CNA? My sister/neice/daughter is a nurse (after inquiring found out they were actually a CNA) and make good money. Hey, they only went to school for x months!" Urrrrgghhh!!! :what: Many hospitals are forcing nurses to at least have a BSN just to get an interview. Yet, the general public doesn't know what it is all about. The one hospital I currently work for is pushing for Magnet. The patients I care for who enjoy the hospital come for the care and hospitality, not because of Magnet status. Most patients do not know anything about it unless they are nurses or work in health care. I want to know if anyone else shares the same experience that I had with non healthcare persons/ or general public.

I am currently a nursing student and CNA. During nursing school I was told from a clinical instructor that she takes notes home on her patients. She told her story about a recent legal investigation done on her job concerning a patient she care for many years ago. All of the nurses who had taken care of this patient were being questioned as well. The instructor said she had to jog her memory about ALL the care she had given this patient during their stay at the hospital. She was able to conjure up some info. In the long run she was not found at fault for any wrong doing to the patient. She said its best to make notes, take them home, and file them away just in case some legal actions are in pursuit in the future. The instructor is not the first nurse I have heard say this. My questions: is this legal and to what extent? What can be documented legally and taken home? Is this a HIPPA violation? Is the note a SOAP, SOAPIE, ADPIE, etc note? I need clarification.

I was very confident throughout nursing school until my last semester then I failed. Plus, I made many mistakes during clinical which was not me at all. I was able to repeat and will be graduating by the end of the month. However, some of that fear is creeping back again. I just dont feel motivated to study for the final exams. Also, Im very scared of NCLEX!!! (shrill cry) I was offered a job with my current employer so that should motivate me but it only makes my anxiety worse.

Congrats to you! I've also been offered an RN job and I graduate at the end of May as well. It is not easy for us new grads to get jobs. Years ago I took the advice I've seen on all nurses about getting a cna job prior to graduating. Having your foot in the door definitely helps.

My friend studied hard, practiced her skills very hard, changed her work schedule, and most importantly stayed humble. She didn't challenge the professors or the school.

Hello everyone, I currently work at a hospital as a cna. I have been working there for 6+ years. My manager recently gave me a job offer to work on one of her units which is considered the worst unit in the hospital. There is high turn over of all staff, most patients are complete care, and staff are quick to report you. Nurse to patient ratio can be 8:1 at times, never 4:1 unless patient census is low. I spoke candidly with my mananger about some of my concerns. However, she says I will be a good fit. I do not desire to work there only to wait for my time to be called. I have worked there too many years without hardly an incident. I am aware the job market is hard and competative. I will accept anything that gives me experience but the nurses on the unit tell me to look elsewhere. Nurses are marketable and you don't have to take anything. I'm not getting any luck when I apply to or inquire at other hospitals. I'm an AND student. Most hospitals want BSN ONLY! I know there is power in in-house hiring. I do not want to give up an opportunity to gain some kind of experience. I'm fustrated and torn! I do not know if I should keep looking somewhere else or tell my manager to hire someone else????

I don't mean to be rude but it sounds like you are pretty much an introvert like myself. I particulary do not like cliques. Never have. It seems like the people in cliques NEED each other just to breathe! Lol. Their decisions are not their own unless its decided by the clique. Even though I am introverted, I tend to talk to everyone. I have several students numbers from my classes and will contact them when necessary. I believe its important for networking purposes. I tell them all the time that I will be contacting them for a reference when I am finished school. Some people I know may be a supervisor or manager one day . I believe in this saying, "Treat people how you want to be treated." If certain people dont want to deal with me, fine. I deal with the ones who do. I try not to exert too much energy into fitting into a clique. If you have made a good impression on your instructors/professors keep in contact with them, since you have not made any connections with your classmates. Ask them for advice and references for future jobs.

I would like to save it so I can fixed my screwed up credit with all these loans
