I actually had an enucleation in Jan. 2008. I LOVE these stories, (especially the CPR one). I recently was wearing an eye patch for 10 months, because.........drum roll please.......my eye was just randomly popping out!!! as a nursing student I was just picturing me doing wound care on a gross infected wound and it popping out and falling in the wound. I also had surgery once since getting a prosthesis, where the plastic surgeon (reconstructive) worked in the socket then put the eye back in. well as I woke up and swelling began it became uncomfortable to have it in there. I was not with it enough to take it out myself, so I just kind of was batting at my eye. apparently my nurse looked like she was going to be sick thinking of taking it out so my mom did (who hates eye stuff to)

The 2 things I remember most from all my surgeries (at this point it is 22 or 23 i have lost count). The nurse who told me she would be there with me the whole time and held my hand while I was going to sleep years ago. and just 1.5 weeks ago the nurse who stopped what she was doing and told me what her job to do was hold my hand. those are seriously the things I remember most. Patients need compassion. not judgement. While waking up from my surgeries. I am agitated and mean. I flail and hit. I have made contact with nurses before hitting them. this last surgery I was crying in post op because I truely hate that I do that but am unable to control it (know what is going on, know it is not the right thing to be doing but for some reason can not stop) my nurse was trying to tell me it was ok but i had trouble forgiving myself....the person i hurt was saying it was ok and i could not forgive myself. as i already said patients need compassion not judgement

first semester once a week (thurs) from 3p-9pm second semester once a week (thurs) from 3p-10p third and fourth semesters twice a week (wed, thurs) from 3p-10p fifth semester twice a week (tues, thurs) from 3p-10p

in my case it is that i look weird (have 1 eye). the fellow students, treated me like crud. HOWEVER the teachers were amazing (our main one in particular she was a GOD SEND). patients were pleased to have be because i traeted them with respect which is all they really care about in the end

Do you mean you are being told to sign off that something was done (e.g. a med given or a dressing changed) or that orders are received? I would think if it is the first NO if it is the second I do not see a problem with it but I only just graduated nursing school so may be missing something (saw it being done nurses who did not take to order signing off that they were received so i dont think it is an issue)

I had surgery once and they had to start recovering me in OR (PACU was full maybe not totally sure) I kept trying to roll over onto my side (how I always sleep). This was bad for 2 reasons 1) or tables are tiny 2) the surgery was on the right side of my face/orbital area. not sure who was there with me but someone kept saying "NO" and pushing me back down as I would try to roll over. I am usually aware as I come out of anesthisa but can not control my actions. dont really like that feeling.

Ya that was making me think of a trach pt who's trach pops out and there is not a spare in there....when asked is it ok to put the old one back in in that case clinical instructors response....well one is an infection risk but the other is a death risk so yes.

If something doesnt seem quite right about a patient, don't let them see you freaking out. (I have had this happen to me as a pt I missed the residents finger once doing the nose finger thing and I could see them freaking out by the look in their eyes never mind the fact that I only have 1 eye so my depth perception is off)

I am actually a patient at a pedeatric hospital. I have a complex medical history and have been a patient there since I was 3. I have a genetic disorder (called Neurofibromatosis) that there are only 2 groups of docs who treat it in the state. there are 3 types of my disorder (actually all completly different but called the same disorder) and my doc's group focuses on my type. The other group focus' on one of the other types. I also see lots of other docs, but because that doc is there it is better to have everyone there so that they can all talk easily because my disorder can cause problems with any system at any time.

There has actually been evidence to the contrary (aka you can NOT get the flu from the flu shot)

I have been a patient more times then I can count. I am a VERY difficult stick (often end up in my feet due to not finding other things) I would not let them and would raise HOLY HE!! if someone tried to remove it due to it not being dated!!!!!

maybe make a spreadsheet of each kid and update it from your log each afternoon? then you have small manageable amounts to do each day instead of going through all of them at once

As a nursing student when I did my rotation in LTC my pt needed a bandaid and I was told where they were so that I could just grab one (he was actually a short term rehab pt however) as a patient -- I was just in the hospital, i had burned myself with nair the night before I went to the ER for a totally unrealated problem and ended up admitted. a couple of days later it had scabbed but I scratched and knocked the scab off, I asked for a bandaid for it (the didnt even know about it on admit) and the nurse just gave it to me there was no order that I know of
