What if you showed up for your mammogram and there were no female techs, only male. When you voiced your concern about wanting a female tech the male tech said" suck it up, you have nothing I haven't seen before." Now you know what it is like to be a male patient,and with 95 percent all nurses female, this is the double standard discrimination mentality.

In the US there are no male mammographers. The way I learned this was to call each state licensing agency that oversees mammography. The ARRT in Minnesota was no help. There were only 34 states that had licensing agencies. The one in Arizona, the MRTBE, will tell you up front there are no male mammographers in Arizona. For the states that don't have a states licensing agency I called the ultrasound repair companies. They perform annual service on all ultrasound equipment and they told me they never saw any male mammographers,ever. I then found a forum regarding mammography, one of the questions posed was if anyone has ever seen a male mammographer. There were several thousand posters and not one Has seen a male mammographer. Additionally, some facilities won't see male patients with gynecomastia on the basis that their female patients would feel uncomfortable sitting in the same room with a male patient. You can draw your own conclusions on the level of discrimination this creates.

People disrespect nurses for manyreasons. From the early 70's toabout the 90's in my opinionmany nurses were evil and dida lot of nasty and disrespectfulthings to patients. Today's nursesare paying for the bad deeds theolder nurses committed.

It's not just male nurses who arediscriminated against,it's malepatients as well

If a hospital has a L&D ward anda mammo dept you can beguaranteed that there are nomales working there. You aregiving your female patients choicesautomatically yet not accommodating your male patients. That is flat out gender discrimination and puts hospitalsin a very precarious positions.

My point is male L&D nurses aswell as post-op male nurses arerare. How would you like it if your trip to the mammography clinicwas met by a male who said toyou. " you have nothing I haven'tseen. Funny thing is" there are nomale mammographers. Period!

I have seen male nude foldoutsfrom playgirl magazine coveringthe entire staff bathroom in anintensive care unit. All femalenurse staff. What is wrong withthis picture. What if there were femalenude foldouts from playboymagazine adorning the bathroomat the mammo clinic. This wouldnever happen cause there areno male mammographers. No male nurses in L&D wardsand no male nurses in post opgyn floors. The double standardsrun deeper than you think.

Should we be expected to take itpersonally, I don't, the patienthas that right. But let's reversethe roles for a moment. There areno male mammographers, no malenurses in post op gyn floors andno male nurses in L&D. At leastfrom a statistically point. Why aremales not given an option andwhy do female care givers take itpersonally.

Patients did not always act like thisand for the most part, their behavior is to be blamed on theentire medical community.

Personally, I want to see the Joint Commission with more powerto investigate patient complaints.

It is a violation of the nurse practice act and if you are found out,the Bon will come down on you hard.

There are many who hate and despise the military. The comment" Since we, as nurses, are goingfor commissioned officers, we aretreated well ( better than enlistedmembers) wherever we go." does not help. It is the actual soldiers, infantry, mechanized, andair support who really make themilitary. Yet,as the poster said thateven during induction physicals,it is ok to treat the soldiers likedirt. I doubt you would have thesame thoughts if that old malephysician would have allowed several young men wearing Jeanjackets and street clothes to stand there and just leer at you whileyou recieved a pelvic exam.

Shouldn't all members of the armed forces be treated well or at least respectfully.Thereare 65 mep centers throughout the united states. During the Vietnam war these centerswere called afees. It was commonplace for male nude physicals to be conducted withnon-medical female clerks who would simply stand there and watch. No privacy what-so-ever. This never happened to female recruits. Here we have people willing to serve theircountry and be put in harms way and defend the constitution so that other people canenjoy all the freedoms the constitution offers, like the 4th amendment,right to privacy. Yet these young soldiers could not have 2 minutes of privacy during a medical exam,pathetic. It wasn't till 2003 that the commander of mepcom issued new guidelines thatno opposite gender Obervers be present. Pathetic that a military commander has toissue guidelines telling military physicians to how to perform a medical group exam. Afterall, they took an oath, I will respect the privacy of my patients.

Wow, you make a lot of assumptions for being a patient service rep. All patients are entitled to respectful care. Would you be outraged to make a mammography appointment and to be greeted by a male mammographer and a male student. Do you always check first to see if male office staff are there. With 95 percent of all nurses, cna's and medical assistants being female this probably dosen't even cross your mind. It's rude and unethical to even assume that all men are comfortable with opposite gender care.

Mammography tech is an on the jobtraining offered to licensed x-raytechs. Male x-ray techs were neveroffered an opportunity to cross train. Currently, there are no malemammo techs in the US. Visit anyurology clinic and the physicianssimply don't staff for their malepatients. If a hospital has a mammoDept, all female L&D unit,than thatfacility is committing gender discrimination and subject to alawsuit if males are not given equalgender care in intimate procedures. In short, with 95 percent of allnurses being female, little privacyis offered to male patients. Thatin itself speaks volumes about howlittle advocating is being done forethe other half of patients.

It is a disturbing double standard. You rarely see males in L&D, I havenever seen one. There are no malesworking in mammography, and nomales in post-op gyn floors, yetwhen a male patient needs a urologic procedure or a cath thefemales come out of the closet toall be in the room at once. Whatis up with that.

Do you know who Stephen Hawkingis? The most acclaimed scientist since Albert Einstein, yet whileproviding home health care to him, his female nurse divorcedher husband and married herpatient. Sounds like a boundaryviolation to me.

Discriminating against obese nursesis OK, they discriminate againstmale patients every day. Noprivacy for male patients. You seeall female nurses in L&D, post-opgyn and only female techs inmammography. It is discrimination not to offersame gender care to male patients,

Agree The nurse name needs togo. I once saw Media from playgirlmagazine posted all over thestaff bathroom in an MICU. Nothing"gender neutral" about that. Who would want to be a male patient on that unit. Imagineif you were a female going to amale gyn and there was Media plastered over the whole wall. Would that be appropriate,Ithink not.

I once saw two female nursescath an unconscious malepatient in full view of anotherfemale patient. No attemptwas made to pull the curtain. It's interesting how some staff behave when the patienthas an advocate in the roomand how their behavior quicklychanges.
