Dear Christiann, 1. DONT PANIC ! 2. CONGRATS First Congratulations on GETTING to the NCLEX. Remember to even sit for the NCLEX you had to pass some type of course. That in itself tells you that you know enough to be a nurse. Please remember that you DID pass your courses so you do know the content. I have taken the NCLEX five ( 5) times and failed them. I will take them again in December and I will pass them this time. I had test aniexty and also ADHD and didnt know it. I completed Saunder, Kaplins, Mosby and a various numbers of other courses yet always I failed the test. I was very good in class and no one could understand why I am NOT a nurse yet. Well, the one thing that i did find out with FAILING the NCLEX is...Life went on and I didnt die !! I know it sounds weird but remember IF you didnt pass then you can sit for them again until you do pass. I do hope that you get your License because you put in the work for it and you do deserve it. If you didnt, Then dont panic just sit down tell youself " I DO know this Content! Where am I not INTERPTITING correctly." It might be just taking the test put you in a bad place. Sit down with one of your instructors if you can or a fellow student you feel comfortable with and Discuss your Thought process. IF you didnt pass it might be because of nerves. Also remember as people find it easier to face the unknown (the test) and picture the worst case senario ( failing). I will add you to my prayers and I am sorry if the sounds like cheerleading but its what I think. FAILURE is a success if you learn from it.

What does mental health mean to you. how to explore feelings What is (pick a diagnosis i.e shiz. personality disorder, borderline disorder) Pick a med ( did haldol in school as a commercial with us on a airplane it was a hoot) anything that gets group participation lots of things out there just be original and have fun with it. learning doesnt have to be boring.

try asisted suicides or if a patient cuold chose to end thier own lives. as patient right activists if our patient wishes to pass on and is of sound mind but thier body is broken do we have a right to go against thier wishes and keep them alive ? We had 5 papers on this and we spent alot of time talking about it inside class and out. Ibet you will get alot of feedback from it. good luck on the paper. *rant* *rant* *rave* and A *wave* Heya, I'm sitting at my work study at the college bored out of my skull so it got me to thinking. What is wrong with my school and how do I fix it? Case in point, I work at a school I started my nursing studies at, but after I was pushed out of it I went to another campus. Yes, I said pushed out. My instructor didn't like me so she gave me a unsatisfactory for my clinical and I couldn't go on to my second semester. She did this to a number of students but for me it was personal. I got my first unsafe because I didn't hear her when she said that we were to bring some papers back the next clinical. So on the second week I was given the unsafe for "frequently" forgetting homework. The next unsafe I received was for a bloody 2x2 that was on the floor after my patient had blood work done in her room. My instructor put down that I was leaving my room cluttered and an unsafe area. The third I got because I became flustered when reading the mar wrong. Yes, these were all things that I did do and I can understand getting at least spoke to, but I don't think I deserved drummed out of the program and atleast one instructor agreed and made some calls to get me into another campus and restart 101. There are good nursing instructors out there. I know because one helped me get into the other program and wow was it different. The first day there I was told " We know you don't know anything we are here to teach you" not "take a look around you. By the time mid term comes around half of you will be gone." And they were very helpful and considerate. This is what I believe a Nursing class should be. I work at the first college and I was in fixing a computer while there was a teacher orientation going on and HEARD the head instructor tell the new instructors "We have a reputation of being anal here and plan to keep it". I have spoken with some of the instructors that have moved on because they didn't like the way things were done. One instructor was told that "too many people were passing his tests "and "he didn't give out enough unsafes" Now tell me please. What kind of a place is this? From what I have heard from different people from different schools my school (where they help students) is the exception NOT the rule. Is it true that once you become an instructor you no longer are a nurse? Do caring and empathy leave you when you enter the hallowed halls of academia? Why do these instructors tell you honesty is a valued skill and then go and lie to us? I have one semester left to go and I graduate, the sad thing is that I look at the person that was so pleased when he got accepted to the person that just wants to get this over and done with. Oh, I still want to be a ER nurse and plan too, yet a lot of the excitement that I had has left me. I see more and more people graduating telling people that are interesting that " you really don't want to do this. Its not worth the hassle", these are the people that I would spend long hours with studying for classes and we would be so happy after wards that we had passed. How is it that some of us are burned out of nursing and haven't even become nurses yet, I know these people are still going to be nurses and still want to be. Yet its like a part of them has died. A little bit of the fire of life is no longer there because of the hassle of nursing school. I once had an instructor tell us that the reason they push us so hard is that it is better for someone to break under the pressure in class than out in the field. Why break them at all ? Why not teach stress management classes, isn't it better that someone works to improve themselves then to have another break them down. Don't misunderstand me, I went to boot camp and saw people break down yet I don't believe this is for nursing students. I think it is better that someone tries to help them understand themselves and get confidence then to push and find if they will break or not. I know that there is lives depending on their skills but I also know that practice someone can handle the jobs. Like I said there are great instructors out there and I want to thank you all who have helped me and others like me. Who do want to be nurses and study hard and have to keep drilling ourselves. Thank you for the time you spend with a student after class in your office tutoring them or when you spend extra time in the lab going over things. These things mean a lot more to the student then we sometimes realize, but they do mean a lot to us. I have taken crap from instructors because I am a man and listened to the whole nightingale nightmare. I really don't care who came into the field first who makes a better nurse.I have heard a lot of people argue about men and women in nursing and who is better. Basically I don't care who is better. What I care about is the person that is counting on me to help them. When I come onto a floor I don't look want to look at peoples faults or hear about how bad someone is or what they have said. I want to be able to work with someone to make another persons day better. I think that is what most of us actually want. I think that is what I have been forgetting. I am doing this for me, because I want to make a difference. I want to go to a hospital look at my fellow nurses (not co workers) and know that today no matter what happens. I did something for someone and made their day a little sweeter or a little better. Only one more semester and I graduate. Yeah, now I have a little smile on my face. I guess I'll get to see what kind of a nurse I will make in December. I don't really know yet, but I do know I gotta get back to those damn books cause one day soon, something that I read in one of those books just might save someone's life. When I was younger (many many moons ago) I was an EMT and liked helping people and realty did want to become a nurse but the stereotype of men as nurses meant that they were gay. I guess I just didn’t have the nerve or confidence in myself to go and be a nurse anyways. Then twenty odd years later my company took all their jobs down to Mexico or overseas leaving me with a lot of time on my hands and not a lot of money. I decided that no matter what I was going to be an ED nurse. I couldn’t tell you about the pay but from what was offered me at some of the job fairs and what was offered some of the others it was close. The older students seemed to be more able to negotiate with the recruiters about the job prices, but then again we were the ones that would discuss raising the wages from “life experiences” while the younger students just wanted jobs. There was no difference in what we were offered man/woman just age. That was just what I saw and hope this helps some. Good Luck on your paper Shotsy !!!

As a student, I loved it when we would get our pt list the day before so i could look things up (procedures and meds and just some words), but that was how two instructors did it now that I am in my second year and i get 3-4 pts. I spend alot of time looking up meds (damn i needs a PDA or better memory) and going over what they are in the hospital for and what else they are taking meds for. I try to prioritize if i can but usually its running around then stoping and getting my act together. I think that it is practise and confidence that will help me get faster but I want better not faster. just IMHO

I work at two bars, home healthcare and work study, I have no life what so ever but I am PASSING and in my final year. (YES !!!) See if you can get a job with work study at the school you go to. Apply in the computer dept. (thats where I am) It usually doesnt take alot of education or know how to get one. Mainly I help students with the computers and study. I get paid to study. I do most of my work here at school or when I was in 100 I would take my medical definitions to one of the bars with me and pass out the note cards and have to tell the person what the answer was. (the bars are a VFW (ex military myself but they do hire out) and an Eagles club) It helped me to pass and people learned somethings out of it. They actually were upset when I stopped doing it. ha ha I am 40 and thinking of going back into the service myself. I found out that the cut off age for the national guard was 36 but they count my time in already so I might be able to get in (had a little problem when I was younger ) I think it would be awesome to go back in as a nurse and an officer.

I love venison. If you can hunt it, then eat it, it always taste better I like to make venison meat balls for my spag sauce but you have to let them cook in a slow cooker for a while to get it right. yummmm

I dont care for the kissing myself, but if the pt. feels comfortable with it, go for it. I really dont have the information on how it is responded to by the pt's. because they havent posted anything. male/female ? in my book it isnt a good idea. infection control/ how it would be seen by others/how the pt or pt family feel about it/professionalism. to many things for me to worry about. but if the NURSE and PT are comfortable with it. more power to them both. if itmakes the pt feel better go for it. as long as nothing out of line is done. no harm/no foul JMO.

T, I can see your frustration. just hang in there (opps!:smackingf) woman. I am in a ADN and I wnet to school for two years before I got accepted into it. I am in it and doing well and hopefully will continue to do well. It sucks to hear they blew you off like that in the bsn program. your still going to be going to class for nursing though. good luck with it. Dave p.s sorry T

Thanks guys, It might not seem like alot to some people. I was scared, thinking of what would happen if I made a mistake with the meds and gave them the wrong one. I mean they do stress what COULD happen to the pt. and then I had the instructor RIGHT over my shoulder. that made me just a tad bit nervous. Thanks for all the support though guys. Dave

okay first men have been doctors and nurses for a Looooonnnng time, you are looking at lawyers (another specis) criminals (not as bad as lawyers) and then comparing them to caring, compassionate, helping people. Yes I am a man, and yes when i was younger I was a DOG !!! if you could think it i had done it. then I grew up. your sons will hopefully out grow it just as some women need to out grow thier always being horny ( yes it works both ways) Now I can look at a woman and appreciate not only her physical beauty but what is inside of her when i talk with her. Its not longer the body its the person that I see WHEN I AM NOT WORKING !. when I work in the er or when I am at nursing school. I see a person that is coming to me because they are in pain and need help. I dont know why you think all men are alike. Are all of your friends the same ? the people the you know or dislike ? You cant compare all men because we are all different.

I plan on getting a pin and attending the ceremony. I mean if I go and dont enjoy it oh well, but if later on I think about it and would regret it. I want the pin because it said " I made it, I finished this course and am ready to go on" I dont know about where i would wear it. It would probably sit on a self or something at home. I would be mine though like 3rdshiftguy and nursemike said, "its a token of thier experince and something to say I did it" the choice is yours though. thats just my 2 cents

I passed my meds tests and practical so not only can I pass meds (when supervised by my instructor) but I can also (drum roll here) I can now give shots !!! :Melody: Wooo Hooo *does happy dance* From what I have seen in class there is only 4 of us that have passed our IM/SubQ practicals. I thought it was a good reason to celebrate. we passed it on the first try is all, now we dont have to wait for two weeks for the re test. yup ! two whole weeks (because we have spring break in the middle) now if I can only do well on the mid term that is coming up on friday. California state university of Pennsilvania (colaborative project with the community college of allegheny county (ccac)). I am currently in the ADN program but I am also taking courses for my BSN because CCAC doesnt have a BSN course. I dont usually get anssigned to female pt.s myself, I do see alot of the girls get female or male. the only time i get to come into the room is when one of the women need help with the p(god it's great just being a piece of meat)t.Its just one of those things, like women perfer women but men dont care or (ahem!) men cant multi task ,per the instructor. things will change. its no biggy, I'm here for the pt. and if the woman is sick enough she will take me. I do plan to be the best nurse I can be not male or female but, I have a feeling thats going to be going on for a long time. Dave

Hi doug welcome to our world nursing school is basically like what mike said it would be like. There is only 5 guys in my class of 60 so we are out numbered. school is tough but it can be done. I like to find people and form a study group. that usually helps with me. that way we can all toss idea's around. its amazing what one person will get out of a lecture and then hear what another person that was sitting right next to you got a totally different picture. I often when i go to clinical ask the nurses if they would like to show me anything i would appreciate it. Most of the nurses i have done this with have often later came and taken me aside and shown me things. While the rest of the class was just sitting down at a nurses station. also I remember I can always elp an aid do something because they get backed up to and I am not to proud to pass a bedpan to someone. I am just trying to pass my class to get my RN. I used to be a high honors student. now I remeber the only letters that are important arent an "A" but a "R" and "N". rememberr "C = Degree" good luck Dave

in my class we dont give injections or start IV's in each other, but when doing vitals (temp,pulse,respirations, lung sounds) I was told by the instructor to lay down on the bed and take off my shirt. when the instructor was done she gave me a copy of RN notes. a twenty buck book free. good luck in school, and thanks for all you do. Hi framps, Welcome to the wonderful world of "male Nurses" of course we go to MALE nursing schools where we learn totally different things then the REAL nurses. ( off soap box now). I am a student in a ADN program and am always taken when someone needs to be moved or another student needs help doing a bath or help with thier patient. I dont mind helping but I also have to right out my paperwork just like the other students. If you dont go help someone they look at you like your refusing to give cpr or something then make a big deal out of how you dont want to help anyone out. all i can do is the best i can do. I am going to school to be a RN nothing else, I'm not going to move everyones elses pt. It gets a little tiring but over the summer last year I worked as a ER tech. most of the rm's were male. and the head of the dept. said she likes men as er rn's because we can move pt better, we are more job oriented (not gossiping (her words not mine)), we come in do our jobs and go home, and that she would really like the er to be totally male. during that time I had to do blood draws and EKG's. So it was real hard to find a woman to give them. the one thing i did find out was that when someone comes into the er they dont care if your a man or a woman they want help and they will take it from whomever gives it. I will be a RN that much i do know, I hope i never referr to someone as a female this or a male that.
