  1. I know a few docs who were nurses first. So it is not near impossible, plenty of people have done it. I'm sure it is very hard work. Hard work and impossible are 2 different things. It is a hard path to becoming a Dr. regardless of where you start fr...
  2. No long distance for patients?

Are you sure they can't if they dial the operator first? i thought pt at my hospital couldn't make long distance calls for the longest time, then I found out they could if they dial 0 for operator first.
  3. Why do some nurses use their titles as a big ego boost?

Maybe you are being sensitive. Maybe she really wants to know how the LPN stuff is going. maybe she is being a good friend and trying to engage in your life. Maybe you are hung up on the title and don't like when people distinguish between the LPN an...
  4. Oh crap, what do I do?

Many times during my stint on a med-surg unit I would leave and forget to waste medications (i did actually waste them, just forgot to get back in pyxis and say I did). Nobody ever called me and said "hey how come u didn't waste this medication, I se...
  5. If a patient wants pain medication I give it to them. If a pt is painful they deserve pain control. If they are a "drug seeker" it is not my job to "change" them and in the amount of time they spend in acute care it isn't possible anyway. The only th...
  6. New RN - what would you do?

The DEA is usually written on scripts so even the patient can see it if they are given the script themselves. I called in scripts all the time after they were written.
  7. Maybe they aren't well established organizations and they cannot afford to pay more?
  8. what was wrong with just giving her the ativan? So unprofessional I can't believe people actually do this. No integrity.
  9. High patient ratio-that's just the way it is...

I wouldn't worry about the step down unit thing until it actually happens. Maybe they would increase staffing at that time when it actually happens. Do you work night shift or day shift? I do not think 7-9 patients is all that uncommon for that shift...
  10. Did you get caught on camera??? You should have denied, denied, denied, he said/she said. Hopefully, whoever is on the other side of the phone will find the story too embarrassing to verbalize to other prospective employers.
  11. Two week Notice??

You don't know who your supervisor/manager is? How is that possible? I have always given my 2 weeks notice in person.
  12. Sigh...the dreaded day...advice needed

You just need to get a job in nursing. Just do it. Nobody is competent in anything until they do it. It is that simple. You will not gain confidence until you get a job, you learn, and then you do.
  13. What do you think? Honestly

At the hospital system I work for I've seen lots of big men working the ER without a prob. They actually come in very handy. I think it will be ok!
  14. I pick the days that I'm dumped on....

My history with this: We would give resource RN's the easiest patients. They wouldn't get post-ops because we only wanted our trained RN's to get them and we did our best to avoid giving them admits. A few RN's that were great RN's loved coming to ou...
  15. Awkward situation while putting in 2 weeks notice

You quit. She didn't fire you. I don't see the problem with saying they may contact your previous employer.
  16. Please help with a difficult ostomy

It would be easier to offer up suggestions if I knew what you already tried/what products you tried/how you are treating the ulcer????
  17. NG suction immunocompromised pt-safety

I don't see the big deal either way since the GI tract really isn't a sterile environment anyway.
  18. Getting patient information before shift

Where I used to work report didn't start until 5 after the hour. So if you are able to punch in 7 mins early and use that 5 mins, that is almost 15 mins you have to look basic info up on your patients. Plus, we had to be done with report and punch ou...
  19. Useless Hospital Committees

Too many people don't have common sense and that is why they need those committees. People can sound VERY rude on the phone and that is why people spend tons of time scripting things. Those little things make a big impact on patient satisfaction.
  20. networking while at clinicals

If you aren't in your last semester I wouldn't mention that you would like her to hire you one day. But it is good to develop a relationship with her.
  21. I think it should be outcome based. I think the easiest way to do it would be by unit outcomes (not single nurses), such as using nurse sensitive indicators, budget, etc. This would also help weed out people who aren't holding up their end of the bar...
  22. Could I fail because of this? can't be that bad...

I think you made a big mistake. Very unprofessional. Shows you are there to do the bare minimum and not excel. Also, in this job market it probably would have been a great move to do the presentation to get your name out there in front of those peopl...
  23. Read this email my NM sent to all the nurses.

Good for her for saying something rather than ignoring the behaviour!
  24. Online BSN - Is it taken seriously?

I do not feel my employer cares how you get your BSN. They strongly encourage ADN's to get their BSN and they actually support an online school and encourage RN's to attend that specific one.
  25. Whistle-blowing now i'm the bad guy!

I agree with the above poster. Look for the anti-harrassment policy and go from there.
