Seasons greetings everyone. I have an interview with the VA in a few days. Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare? Thank you for any input.

I am in a similar position. However the advice I received from an employment center was, instead of bullets, rewrite my position descriptions in paragraphs with headings for each major task. They said bullet-style job description was outdated. I haven't done it yet, as it seems pretty daunting to rewrite a 4-page resume right now, but I will tackle it later today. I have a 5-year nursing gap, but have been traveling with my spouse as well and also caring for an ailing parent. I am hoping I won't have to do a refresher course since I kept my licenses current. Anyhow, if anyone has good advice on the best way to write this resume, or can provide a winning sample, please help. Some encouragement will be much appreciated as well. I am so ready to go back to work.

Wow, couldn't have said it better! You spoke so many truths, things you know deep inside are true but no one seems brave enough to admit. You try to find out if you're the only one who feels that way, buy others deny they do, leaving you feeling like the failure of the lot. I'm so glad you were honest. Best of luck to you and whatever you choose in the future. If you continue on in nursing, hopefully they will request you give talks and in-services on how to survive the profession. You are a Godsend and a breath of fresh air. Wish I could know you.

The cost and length of the course spend on whether you have any credits to transfer. It will take me 18 months at about $500 per credit plus other fees.

I am currently attending. I just started but so far things are going smoothly. If you have never done an online course before, it can seem complicated to navigate the different area on the site, but my graduation team was very good at guiding me through. It is a rather fast-paced program it seems, so I need to reserve a true evaluation until further on.

Hi everyone. I, too am lookng into the SUNY Delhi RN to BSN online program. I have some credits towards my BSN from SUNYIT Utica/Rome. However I was told that that they may not all transfer. I sort of thought that as long as it was within the SUNY system all my credits would transfer. Anyhow, I will wait for confirmation on which ones do transfer if any. The point is I think that this may be my best option to complete my BSN. If anyone else that has been through the program can share their experience, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. I have been living in Germany for over a year now and have not had the good fortune to be offerred a job as yet. I also received a no reply email a while back, but nothing else. I was starting to lose hope. Thank you so much for your post. It really helps. I know the spots are limited, so I suppose only the very best nurses will be hired. I still pray I get my chance. Oh wow, I would so love to work at Landstuhl. I have sent my resume in and am still waiting. I live in Germany now moe than a year as a military spouse. However I do not seem to have any luck. I pray someone will have mercy. :)

P.S I did start the application for UOP, but had second thoughts as the cost is outrageous. I could always get a loan, but imagine the pain of having to pay all that money back

i probably would not have mentioned it if it were not directly asked of me on applications. once again, a very good example of being stuck between a rock and a hard place. you know, maybe i am just naive, but here is a prime example of a situation where telling the truth does you no good, and telling a lie may. sad, sad day in nursing. but thanks for the encouragement. i do plan to use this time to complete my bsn.

Hi, I read the postings here and wished I had read them before I was terminated. I was ganged up on at work by my fellow nurses and my nurse manager. I played into their hands by letting it known that I was suspcious of a consipracy. I also had a run in with my manager that gave her good reason to write me up - although I was provoked. Anyhow, I am not going to cry about being a victim, as I contributed to my own demise, but I know I was unfairly treated. I was also not given any opporunity to officially voice my complaints. Now I am jobless and unable to find another because of the termination on my record. Suffice it to say, having had to live with the daily scare of very little funds, I have learned my lesson. I know when to given up and give in. It sounds good to say "stand up for yourself," or "live up to your ethical standards," or "morals are key to this carrer." But when it comes down to it, if you try to do the right thing and someone feels threatened, you are a goner. I don't think nursing is right for me. It is very hard to do the right thing, especially when your manager threatens you every day. It is a sad, sad day for nursing when a manager can get away with creating a hostile environment for an employee and that employee is the one who gets fired. Well, although I am jobless and struggling - despite 10 years of a very gratigying nursing career, I know there are many other things to be thankful for. So I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving :cheers:and hope to read more on this thread soon.

Thanks to the one who asked this question and many thanks for the response. This is similar to a question I had posted earlier this morning. I think maybe I have my answer from your reply to the other user's question. However I will repost my question and hope for further input. I also must add that my 4 years nursing experience have been sporadic due to home situation. I often have to resign to take care of sick children at home etc. I have been home for 6 months and before that I was in a clinic for 1 year. I happen to be in the same boat as RNDIVA. I was Med/Surg, Tele, Clinic nursing before, now I wish to do Mother/Baby. I have an interview for a job on a mother/baby unit. The first thing the recruiter asked me is whether I have any mother/baby experience. Needless to say, that made me a little anxious. Hopefully I will be able to learn the floor quickly. I have never done any OB/GYN nursing, but it is a field I would love to enter. I have read the posts and noticed that when referring to OB/GYN, many refer to L & D. Does this mean a mother/baby nurse also works L & D or only in some facilities? I really would love to do L & D , but I prefer to be cross trained from another unit. That way I can learn at my own pace without feeling rushed to be on staff in that unit. Anyone who can shed some light on this suject, I would truly appreciate your response. Also any help with interview prep would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Be blessed.

4ZBirds, your VA sounds an awful lot like my VA. I have been there less than one year as well, and I have seen at least 5 RN's and a few LPN,s resign. I feel like I am right behind them. I truly am shocked at the way things are. It is not only one area that is lacking, it is a total breakdown. Many people say it that way where ever you go, but I have been at at least two other hospitals and the only things I can complain about are the things that are an evidence of nationwide nursing shortage, e.g high patient to nurse ratio, working short staffed, or being pulled to other floors. The other things here at the VA leave me permanently jaw-dropped, and shaking in my boots. Anyhow, here's hoping another job will come available soon. I don't believe VA nursing is for me.

I finally heard conc retely that I now have a job with the VA. I was given a start date, at last. It took about 1 1/2 months to complete the process. It never actually took me that long to get a job before:chuckle . Anyhow, thank God, I start soon. I am very excited. I look forward to working with our honored veterans, and to give back to them as they gave to us voluntarily. I will post on my experience as I garner some. God bless all.

Can someone please share the difference between a VN, AD and a GS Pay Plan? I noticed that the VA nurses do not follow the GS pay plan. Are they stilll considered civil servants? Any comments. Thanks very much.

It is all quite interesting to read the comments. I just applied at the VA Fayetteville, NC. Here's hoping I get in. I only have an ADN, and am part-way into my BSN. I am not enrolled at this time. I sure hope it is not as terrible as it seems. I am determined to stick it out, however, if I get in. Thanks for posting all your candid comments. BTW, Soldiersnurse, I think your siggy lilne is a hoot.:rotfl:
