Nursing is the Biggest Mistake of My Life
1) your fiancee sounds like an *******. I would say don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. Been married to a man like that, kicked him out after 10 agonizing years. 2) do people secure jobs without graduating yet? This is definitely new to me. I've never heard of that. I really think that you're going to be ok. I don't know where you live but in general there is a nursing shortage. Even here in Atlanta where all the schools offer nursing and it's so populated. I would say keep your head up and continue on.

Quitting nursing school?
First of all I see that you don't want to pass medications and document. I think I feel that that skill is going to be the Baseline of new nurses.. everyone is going to start somewhere before they get to their OR job or ICU job or what have you. I could be wrong but most nurses I see go through med-surg floor first. You have to have your basics down before you move somewhere fancy. When I was in nursing school and I'm currently in nursing school, I was very shy to speak up and I thought that I didn't know enough. By medsurg 4 I was sailing and very Happy I kept going.

Already been told I shouldn't be a nurse (Rant)
Oh Lord such an EMT mentality.

Already been told I shouldn't be a nurse (Rant)
I would have asked "so can I have my CPR card now?" In reality many nurses really get better at CPR in the field watching other people. Because as long as you're not by yourself it's unlikely you'll run a code. Hopefully the first few times you'll observe someone else do it and hopefully they'll give deep enough compressions and fast enough. Remember just because they're fast does not mean they're deep. They need to be fast and deep as well. Ignore that CPL person and Just Keep On Trucking. On a side note one time I was discouraged that my CPR would not be good enough. A doctor literally told me not to worry and to work on my skills and to remember that any CPR is better than no CPR.

How do people feel about male nurses?
At least working with a male nurse gives you something nice to stare at.
-
I'm a sexless nurse
For the record - as a victim of molestation from a male relative I would not want a strange male catherizing me. No offense to him. It took me years to have sex without flashbacks, it took years to open my legs to my female NP gyn, and it would take more strength than I want to again have to battle internal demons. Would I openly object? Probably not. I'm too scared he would go to a female nurse and say "***** in 6 thinks shes too good for me to see her goodies!"

Summer Job Woes
Stop telling them it's for the summer... You're not cutting ties. Let them know you have something else going on and you loved the time spent there and you'd like them to consider you in the future. I was a store manager before I was a LPN, I rehired people all the time.

Pre employment urine drug screen for nursing home, will they test for alcohol?
Alcohol is not illegal and I doubt that they will even mention it to you. But was drinking like a goose the night before a good idea? Always expect a drug test without warning, employers are going to this for whatever reason.

Do you stop your medpass to "watch a pt"?
Delegate to a CNA or like someone else said - park them in a geri chair in the hall. Another good idea - have them taken to ALL activities, that way they are watched and stimulated.

How Often Do You Check...?
I have 20 blood pressure meds to give. And I have to pass meds to 36 residents and 3 g-tubes. I have 2 hours too technically be finished.I would be giving 8am meds until 2pm :/ normally on the MAR it will say check vitals, and normally the vital sign is pulse. I have only 1 daily BP.

Preparing for resident death
When I found my first dead resident it was one I liked very much. He went from wearing a suit to dinner to dead in 2 weeks, quite fast down hill. I cried my eyes out in the bathroom. Then I was fine and his daughter came. She said "you always took such good care of him, thank you for loving my dad." Then she cried and I held her hand. It doesn't get easier for me. I love them too much. Each death is a blow. But I get over it, knowing people dont live forever.

New Grad LPN: Job Hunt
I'm in Georgia. the week after my NCLEX I put in about 12 job applications in LTC, hospice, and publc health. By tge next week, 9 of them had called to interview. I was able to pick my top choices.

Don't be that Nurse
I work in LTC with CNA's and I'm a new nurse but I'm courteous to all my CNA's since that was me for 3 years. I try to complement my residents on the care. Like my CNA took the time to french braid a ladys hair and put her makeup on. With the 2 there I said "wow jane! You look so beautiful, molly styled your hair gorgeous!" It makes the residents feel good and I acknowledge the CNA took more effort than just getting them out of bed and doing nothing with them. Also if you need hoyer help, call me we'll get that puppy sorted!

Not Being Respected as a CNA
Honey, at my old CNA job even the maids were paid more and looked down on us. All you can do is say to hell with them. You're not there for them, you're there for the residents and patients.

In Ohio thinking of STNA for part time job
Oh lol. I've never heard of that acronym. Anyway, I dont like when people become a CNA for just a job. To really take care of all their needs you have to WANT to take the bad with with the good. You'll be changing adult diapers, cleaning up vomit, feeding someone who can't for themselves and a "thank you" will be hard to come by. Can you commit to caring for your residents no matter what?

RN - Crushing medications
Our facility crushes all separately then combine them in 1 cup. UNLESS its tube meds, then flush separately. Ask your policy director.
