  1. My plan is to go into wound care - OP clinic and Debride wounds all day! I work in wound care currently, and plan to stay there.
  2. I'm going onto my first home health job. My agency supplies a few basics - gloves and chux. What's in your bag, any suggestions as I assemble mine, and organize the trunk of my car?
  3. I sent an app for LA County Sheriff RN, and received a test date. I am a bit concerned because I have a close relative in the CA Prision system. Does anyone know if this will cause me to be disqualified?
  4. Contacting the congressman who represents your district also works. however, as the BRN really answers to no one, careful not to irritate the wrong person, or your paperwork may end up getting the desk-shuffle or bottom of the pile treatment
  5. I got my license dec 19th, applied to LA County Sheriff shortly after. Got a letter in the mail this week telling me I have a testing appt Feb 20th. The funny thing is that I have sent out so many apps, everywhere I see that I had forgotten That I applied to the Sheriff. Wish me luck, the Ca New Grad job search is brutal.
  6. Bless you Esme, get better soon.
  7. Apply, no journey is finished with out the first step.......I was scared to death too. Who knows, they may give you a big green light. I have waited since June 2013 for licensure, from "old Stuff", it's been a long frustrations wait, but almost finished. What really boosted my confidence, and gave me some hope was when I was interviewing attorneys to represent me. May told me it was possible, it would just take time. Consider era representation, as Attys in your state that specialize in this area know all the ins and outs, and the way around the BRN. Good Luck.
  8. Here is my experience with Ca: Applied for RN license and to take NCLEX thru my college April 2013 With all paperwork listed for "those who answered YES to any of the above" on the app. Graduated June 2013 Denied shortly there after, but with option to appeal. Interviewed several attys, finally chose one, who urged me to appeal, and take NCLEX as soon as possible NCLEX Aug 2013, passed Retain Atty. More time passes. Finally in FEB 2014, get the "statement of Issues" basically their reasons to deny me liscensure. MY PAPERWORK-LOST/ sat buried under a pile on BRN Desk for 1st time, for 2 months. Thank god for my atty, he got it moving.. April,2014 my case transferred another person at BRN, who after multiple calls and emails from my atty, got agreement for " unrestricted liscensure with a public repremand, stating I am not a threat to public safety. Which is basically a license with a letter attached to it. Will be on the internet BRN Breeze For 10 years. July 2014, completed agreement of wording for letter of reprimand, walked by my atty to BRN the next morning...... It was supposed. To be mailed out by the BRN To members for "voting" on final approval of wording of repremand. More waiting. AUGUST 2014- applied to New grad residency program and was given an offer, contingent upon me having a valid LISC number on the internet, told BRN of this. Sept 30 2014 - had to decline offer of new grad program, NO LISC YET! BRN refuses interim permit or to expedite to allow me to stay in new grad program. Atty spends better part of Last days of Sept on phone with BRN TO GET SOMETHING GOING. NOTHING . Today, still waiting............. Yes, the CA BRN is Difficult, I have heard of other similar situations that haven taken as long, for old, old offenses that would be of no consequence in other states. It seems like I am being punished for my "crimes" by stretching out the length of time to obtain my license. They state that they are overwhelmed with applicants/paperwork, .......... In the meantime, I see others from my class get RN jobs, and here I am, where I was almost a year and a half ago.
  9. keep up with your reading. get help early with things you don't understand everything they teach you will be used in one way or another - learn it as it's presented - so you aren't scrambling to later on top of new material.
  10. Neck to toe white - white socks and shoes too. Hair in a tight bun. no movement. or "satellites" School logo on right sleeve. In fundamentals they make everyone line up at the front of the room for "uniform check" - then you also have to life the back of your top, bend over and get your fanny looked at to make sure your undies don't have prints and there is enough coverage! After Fundamentals no specific uniform checks, but on weekly evals you can be marked off for uniform violations.
  11. This seems to be a very common experience for many of us Nursing students. My entire clinical group hates clinical. We are all nervous as can be before, and never know what we will get on the paperwork after. One time something is OK, the next time it is bad. The only conclusion I have come to is that it's the CIs problem, I to do everything to the best of my ability, with patient saftey first. The bad thing is they do have our future in their hands. I keep trying to kill 'em with kindness, stay as clam (even when I'm shakin' inside), never let them see me sweat - and on the days when she is really on my a**, look her in the eyes, and tell her straight out "I'm having a really bad day, no excuses,I just am" - that worked for me. She got off my a**, I took a breather , then stayed I the room with my pt and gave her the best care and most attention ever. By the end of the day, I felt better, my pt and her family couldn"t say enough good about me, and the CI had nothing more to say.... that day. At my school, it is common for the Nursing Instructors to "eat their young." Here are a couple of other things that have helped me - talk to students in the semester or 2 before you find out what to expect - document, document, document - write a letter, don't mail it, but tell the CI all the things you would say if you could (this gets it out for you, and you can move on) - Do you get to do an anonymous evaluation at the end? carefull though with details, while your name isn't on it, she might have an ideal who you are. All of the CI's at my school talk - eat lunch together around a big table!
  12. My best guess is that there are so many spots, and many many applicants- Just another way to Weed out those who aren"t a good fit for this school - Have you applied to more than one school? IT always good to have a backup plan.
  13. For those going for LAHC Spring 2012 - I am just finsihing the Fall 2011 classes - SO I'm one semester ahead of you: - Be patient after the TEAS, the rest happens quickly - min TEAS V for my class was 62. then there is another Lottery. - Brush up on Word and maybe Excel, have a good computer and printer ready for the work, - simplify your life as much as possible, if you have a Significant other and/or kids, start having them do more on their own. Spend time with them now,but get them used to seeing you hit the books, and leaving you alone. - Simplify your Hair and makeup - get used to doing & wearing less. - see if you can get along without a purse - just keys and some $ - - Fix a place in your car for books, water and storing the things you don't use every day - don't over buy on supplies, get a inexpensive $ 20.00 stethoscope, - but do invest in good shoes for clinical - Feel free to email me with questions, I'll be happy to answer.
  14. read before the class - when you are reading jot down things you need clarified. Study from the very first day. Work hard to "get" Nursing Plans, Nursing Process. Be ready to live by: See One, Do One, Teach One - not that you will teach that soon, but we have been expected to understand everything on the first go-round. Make notes on the forms you will use, so whe it's time to use them you will know what they are for, and how they are to be filled out Take your time forming a study group, be choosey with firends, keep your own nose clean. Don't get caught up in the drama. read, Study, work hard. Good Luck !
  15. Yup great book for us "beginners" Mine came on Wed, I used a borrowed one before that. Finally a way to navigate writeing Nursing plans
  16. JX, Nursing School is one tough road - from the Prereqs on, you have already learned so much, and traveled so far. I am a little bit behind you, there are many days when I wonder "what did I sign myself (and my family) up for. Then there are other days when I think Yup, I CAN do this. Keep my eye on the prize, suck it up and just get thru it. Open another book and try to remember how glad I was for the acceptance letter, What i'm trying to get at is once you are finished, you get to decide what kind of job you have, it is only Hospital work if you want it to be.
  17. You hear the phrase " You'll have no more life" - well it's really close to the life you knew is OVER. You will have a life, only it will consist of massive amounts of very foreign material, presented in a seemeingly foreign language, which you will be expected to show your knowledge of within a week. You will have to learn to learn differently - the material is presented to Nursing Students differently from "regular" calsses, my guess is to, once again, to teach us to think like nurses. (liken it to the instructor tossing all the pieces of a puzzle up in the air, you are expected to catch, understand, and apply before it gets past you.) The old adage "see one, do one, teach one" is the speed of which the material is presented. Then there are the "rules" while each school is different, there will always be plenty of them. Soon you will be happy with arriving at clinical on time, little or little makeup, as long as your hair is in the prescribed syle, and you are ready to learn at that ungoldy hour. Your instructors may or may not do the Good cop, Bad cop thing, one seeming soft and one tough and strict, but make no mistake, they are hear to teach you, get you ready to interact with patients. They are required to cover the prescribed material in the alotted time frame. it's a tight schedule, and at least at my school, well adhered to. Your personal life, probelms....... need to be put aside each day while you are at school so you can get everything, As should any drama, you simply don't have the time of enegry for it. The biggest piece of advice is to choose you study partners wisely- be friendly with everyone, and observe - they can help you to"get it", be your cheerleaders, boost you up (and you the same for them) OR they can drag you down, confuse you, and make things harder. They can point out the weak spots, and pat you on the back for all of the little victories that come along. My class is on week 6 of 16, have bonded well, are laughing together, helping each other, sharing resources, and cheereing for each others successes. There is always going to be the "suck up" who wants to get ahead by being teacher pet, the class clown, etc - but the bottom line is you get out of it what you put into it, work hard, study hard, you'll be Ok -
  18. Oho Boy, Been right with you - thick curly hair that has a mind of it's own. This worked for me till I got tired of all of the timeit took. Wash with conditioner every other day. Gel in the shower when drippin wet, then plop/plunk ( see naturalycurly.com for the technique ) and diffuse to get the drips out then I put up the top, then the back, finally the front. I used as many hairpins as I needed, A harinet or 2 to keep the "satellites" in place - the spin pins are good too, as are multiple buns or ponytails close together, My School is very strict - we even have to life up the back of our all-white uniforms. At 5:00 AM this was taking too much time, an I had a headache before Noon, so I went to an upscale salon, told the stylist what I needed and why, Now I have an A line Bob - I chose this because it requires minimal drying, NO putting up, Now when I have clinical, I can be out the door in 20 minutes if I need to be, if I want to I can make it fancy, I just hated the way I looked and felt every day. Good luck, for those of us with this kind of hair - it's more worry than many tests!
  19. Love this ! glad I'm not the only one. I like 2-3 rows back, a little to the profs left. I have a hard time sitting still, I really squirm arond alot, this spot gives me a good view, and room to move. I'm also a creature of habit, I do not like it when someone is in "my seat"- when this happens, I'm all off balance and irritated at the one who "took" my seat! When I have been in classes where this happens, I pray for assigned seating.
  20. 19 days and counting - excited, scared, worried.......... - I have had my fundamentals books most of the summer and have done quite a bit of reading. Still deciding on and gathering up the rest of the the supplies. Choosing a stethoscope, shoes, ....... What to do with the Hair - I don't want to waste time fixing it,, nor do I want to look scary. Oho, and spending as much time as I can with my 10yr old son. His wellbeing while I am in school is one of my biggest concerns.
  21. Love school supplies - got my 10yr old going too. Favorites: Black Pearl eraser - a perfect oval disc, doesn"t leave eraser marks, and it a great tension tamer to fiddle with in my hand before a big exam. Tichonderoa Tri-Rite Pencils - the most comfy for hours of writing. Sticky Tabs Blue Painters (Masking) Tape - I use this for everything - Marking Luggage, taping up hems.... to taping the wrapping on the sandwich in my lunch closed.
  22. Check out www.dosagehelp.com They have a whole website, as well as the option to send random questions as often as you like. Good practice for random Dosage practice
  23. Are you at at CC ? Many of those here in CA do "early education" - for students who are going to be pre-school teachers, and here many students take their children to that center for child care. It's on campus, and minimal cost. Even of you are not at a Cc, ccheck into them - the cost is mimimal. My heart goes out to you, when I went back to work, after my son was born, I was a single mom. I made too much for help - but not enough to survive. Childcare was $600.00 of more a month, and no matter where I looked, they all said I made "too much" - many nights of noodles for dinner, if I had $ 10.00 at the end of the week I was doing really well. Now I am married, and hubby works, but if I am ever rich..... I will help the single Moms, struggling family that is "in-between."
  24. At orientation we were warned by Instructors and Students alike that our lives would be consumed my Nursing School. They also suggested that we take a day a week for ourselves/family/friends. I am planning on Sundays - on that day, unless there is an exam the next day, I am planning on not studying - I do plan to spend time with my family, cook a few meals for the week, and rest. That said, I hope I can stick to it. The clinical skills, and your comfort level will come with time soon you will be able to do this stuff with your eyes closed. Congrats on the 92% that shows your dedication. Keep your chin up, eye on the prize, and you'll be done before you know it !
  25. Great thoughts, I have always been one to bring my lunch - here are a couple of quick and cozy things I do. Start with canned Homestyle Chicken Noodle soup as a base then Green Salsa for bite, extra cooked chicken for added protein enegry, even noodles. Warm this, then top with tortilla chips and cheese. I use the lo-salt, 100 calories soup as a base and go from there. Vanilla greek yoghurt - cut up fresh fruit = granola or Trader Joes Toffe or Vanilla cerea, or grape nuts for extra crucnh Steamed fresh veggies - the biggest varitey I can find, Sprinle mixed cheeses after heating - ( this one has been the envy of many cafeteria) I steamed the veggies till about 3/4 done the night before - that way they aren't much for lunch. Making my lunch the evening before while dinner is cooking has been the secret to many great lunches. The time is worth the effort, I'm always sorry when I don't make my lunch.
