Funny you say that, because before I had my daughter, the only way I was able to afford a beautiful suburb of Queens (Fresh Meadows) was to have a roommate! And that's Queens! Not so easy w/a family. Oh well ... :) .

If annonny had to suffer $300 more while being paid less than she was in California, with two degrees working in a similar field, what does that say for everyone else?????? No Krissypoo, not that much more, to be quite honest. Depending on what industry szccdw is in, market rents in Manhattan and a few other select places in the five boroughs are out of the question. Deb, you and I know that although those prices you quoted may be "reasonable" by high-brow New York standard, they are BY NO MEANS reasonable. I mean, really. Guaranteed, a coffee shop worker's salary in NYC is NOT enough to pay the rent. As for right now, I have been priced out of the market entirely in locations where I would want to live (even in neighborhoods that most would consider traditionally "sketchy", also referred to as "gentrification") and now am in Jersey City where things are still SLIGHTLY reasonable, but are on their way up as well. Remember, that's why "Ol' Blue Eyes" says, "If I can make it here, I'll make it anywhere ..." IT AIN'T CHEAP! LOL! OK, so maybe he was saying it for a different reason, certainly he could have afforded an apartment in Chelsea or LES on an artists' income when he sung that song! LMAO! Try Chelsea or LES NOW! I myself am making every effort to GET OUT, and I am a NY native. Housing, among other things, is absurd, plain and simple. That said, yes, newyork.craigslist.org is an awesome resource for more than just apartments. Definitely keep it in your 'Favorites' and refer to it daily. It's certainly not what it used to be, because now everyone and their mother knows about it, but it can be better than the local papers. Good luck.

Me too, Z! Both for the patience of a fly and wanting to work the "graveyard". I guess I worry because my current secular workload won't allow me to even begin pre-reqs. properly until the Spring semester (I just found out how intense training for a new position will be July - Dec.) and I'm so indignant that I had to slap myself into promising that I wouldn't take more than one class for the Fall semester, and even that's pushing it. I just can't wait, so sue me! :)

Of course, the excitement of beginning anything can be enough to make you want it NOW, but is anyone else as impatient as I to get started with pre-reqs., clinicals, and ultimately being an RN? This attitude has always helped me in the past with accomplishing what I set forth to do, but I don't know how it may affect my decision and plan in becoming an RN. I don't want to bite off more than I can chew, as they say, but I feel incredibly empowered to have finally arrived at a profession that I know I will be able to take pride in. Oh well, just figured I'd sound off. Thanks for reading.

A fellow co-worker told me that she knew I was having a girl because my nose was wider at the bridge? The power of suggestion? Maybe, but it sure did look wider!

Amen to ALL the folks but especially mothers out there with their minds on providing ... mentally, physically, emotionally and FINANCIALLY ... to us its all the same and if we can find a way to contribute to the lives of our families and possibly better the lives of the people that we provide care to ... its a NATURAL calling! Someone else already said above, and I agree: Why not get paid for it?

I felt highly compelled to post to this thread. Nursing is not my calling. I hadn't blinked an eye at it until my "significant other" told me how much his sister made last year. I am definitely a disgruntled IT drone, and the rate at which those and other jobs are flowing overseas is enough to make me nervous, enough for me to seek out a career, a profession, that will allow me to provide for my family while realizing a significant degree of pride in what I do. Both are equally important to me as a mother raising a daughter whom I want to have every possibility available to her and every bit of pride in mom's accomplishments, to foster a similar sense of accomplishment in her, no matter what she chooses. Enter Nursing. And for me, I don't think I will be stopping until CRNA status. The idea of being independently wealthy appeals to me strongly. Right now, I also like the idea of the degree of interaction with other human beings that Nursing offers. One might realize that doesn't really happen in Cubicle Land where I'm from. :stone :stone :stone I do also highly value the idea that I would be able to affect someone's life in a positive way by what I say or do. But uh, yeah. It's mostly about the money.

Very scary. Beyond drawing new students to Nursing programs, is there another solution right now? How serious is the situation with traveling nurses? After all, they are nurses like any other, and one would think, or at least want to believe that they are interested in their patients health like any other nurse.
