  1. Hi there! I tried post a new thread about this but for some reason I kept causing "fatal errors" -what's new right? I'm starting school in the fall. I intend to make nursing a part time career as our family business takes up much of the rest of my life. Does anyone know if a new grad can start part time or will I need to get full time experience first? Thanks -Maryam
  2. eltrip- this has nothing to do with the OP- but I'm getting ready to leave Nashville-(finally) and move back home to Northern Virginia- I'm glad you're glad you left To where have you escaped?
  3. Larry- I've been very afraid of all my reasons for nursing as a career choice-(DOESN'T INCLUDE MAGICAL CALLING) but there really aren't many things out there that can be done part time- for reasonably good pay- and it really seems I could actually LIKE this job if I didn't have to be there ALL THE TIME.
  4. Thanks llg-What is your "dream job" if I may ask? How long have you been at it? Would you completely retire if you could?
  5. Thanks Stevielynn, good to know. Do you think you could go full time if you had to- or is nursing just overly stressful?
  6. I really want to get some responses here so I'm trying to keep this thread up
  7. I'm about to enter nursing school and of course "plan the rest of my life":chuckle I'd like to know, mostly from all the unhappy nurses out there, if being able to work part time would make your career better, or even GREAT? One of the reasons nursing appeals to me is that I can work part time- my family has a business that I love doing- but not all the time- and I've allways been attracted to doing more than one job- helps keep things interesting- I could probably afford to buy my own insurance, just to address that issue.
  8. No, no longer a student. I studied Bio at U of Virginia before running off to NY. I SO know what you mean about the criticism, I too am quite sensitive. I got so tired of just ANYONE taking it upon themselves to give me advice on how I could improve. It is really hard to take over and over again. I've seen a lot of posts on this site about being criticized at work- I think we'll have an advantage -We've got extensive experience with criticism of our most private and personal stuff. And the business, uugh, I now work in it. Nothing has pushed me further from wanting a music career. It is sad- the thousands and thousands of desperate souls out there DYING to make it in music. I do like Nashville though, Vandy's a great school. Is your accelerated bsn qualify as a "second degree" program, I'm wondering how these programs work.
  9. Annabelle. its so great to hear from you, I too have been spending years attempting a music career, which really meant 3 and a half years bartending in NY and the last 2 in Nashville. Its been a lot of fun for sure, but I'm just tired- and I think I've outgrown some of the need for glamour. And I do agree that there is a bonus to not having those romantic ideas about nursing. Are you presently a nurse or in school?
  10. The "why are you really going to nursing school" thread has been really informative -I'm not the only one- I just hope us "non calling" nurses don't end up being the ones that so very much hate it- I'd love to get more feed back from working nurses
  11. Ok, like many of you here I'm "thinking about nursing school" and have been for many years - our society teaches us that because we are free we can and should be "whatever we want to be" -problem- I cannot cheerfully say that there is ANYTHING I want to do "for the rest of my life" What I like about nursing is the science, the fact that its physical (hate sitting at a desk), the fact that its portable (can be done anywhere), the hours are reasonably flexible, there are many jobs available and that it can be done part time. I know I can be good at it because I'm smart and I'm kind most of the time but I don't think I feel "called." I am very pragmatic and I don't think I can save the human race. Are the above mentioned reasons reasons enough for becoming a nurse? I really can't imagine that every one of the 2 million nurses in this country felt and intense "calling" right? PS- my mother's a nurse, happily, and I know several others so I do know what I'm getting into
