  1. Thank you for your input, I appreciate it! (I didn't get an alert that anyone responded, sorry this response took so long!)
  2. This depends on the type of interview! We do not conduct an interview that is NICU based but one based on the type of experiences you have had & how you handled them. We are looking for character. We can train a NICU RN, but we can not train ethics, and values. Can we trust you alone in a patient room? If you make an error, would you self report? How do you work with team members? You disagree with an MD order, how do you handle it? That is how we handle our unit interviews.
  3. Breastmilk is now treated like a med admin through EPIC. Scan the pt, scan the med (breastmilk label). Errors can still occur when proper protocol is not followed. We must always be diligent and not take short cuts!
  4. I am in the process of working my way up our clinical ladder (meaning more $$) and if we join professional organizations, that adds more points. Which professional organizations do you belong to and why? What are they benefits? All I have seen are at least $100. Thanks for any input!
  5. Our hospital is baby friendly in Postpartum only, not NICU. We give out formula all the time. Many times new parents do not have time on day of discharge to prepare at home. This buys them time to get settled. I'd be more concerned to discharging to parents that do not seem capable to care for their infant. I would make sure social work follows up.
  6. Listen and ask a lot of questions (but not the same one over & over). Never assume anything. Treat every baby and family as if they are your own. Compassionate care goes a long way! If it doesn't seem right, it probably isn't so double check everything. Good Luck! I am 2 years in, and still learning all the time!
  7. We have guys in our NICU, some of our best nurses! I came to the NICU as a new grad through our Children's Hospital Residency/Versant program. It can be done. Good Luck to you!
  8. Me too, please!!!! If you do not mind.
  9. Start with sharing evidence based practice & research. Elsevier Good luck!
  10. Looking for some input!!! We are devoleping new bathing protocols for our unit come early next spring. While I do need evidence based information, I thought I would start with some general information gathered from other units. If you could help me out, that would be great! If you have links for evidence based studies, even better! How often do you bath your babies?? Do you use bath tubs on your unit? What soap/lotions does your unit use?? I'll just start with those basic questions for now!
  11. Pinklady8888 I test 2/15 too. GOOD LUCK TO US!!! I took Kaplan 3 weeks after graduation. It was a 2 week course. I have been studying a bit each day, for 5 days a week. I take to 2 days off. As it gets closer I get more nervous, but I think I am good. Just need to keep plugging along!
  12. Are you NRP certified? I am not sure, but isn't it covered in it?
  13. Thank you for telling her to go after her heart. I so needed to hear this! I am a new grad & I am applying for jobs I want to do. I have 10 years of Mother/Baby Lactation experience & seriously, I do not want to work med surg! I feel like I have worked to HARD to take a job, I really do not want to do!! I know jobs are seriously hard to come by & if months pass & I can not get that mother/baby job, I may consider med surg, but why not start off know what is in my heart?? Anyway, it was nice to see encouragement to do so!!!
  14. Just want to shout out a big THANK YOU to the ICU & ED nurses I worked with this last rotation. More than willing to share & teach, even when we were so busy! Had one patient circling the drain for 3 days straight & we were chasing him all day long! The ED nurses showed me around that ED, and did not get frustrated with me when the NG tube would not go down (btw did not go down for her or another RN either). They were great!!!! Thank you, from this RN Student.
  15. And this is why we need standardization of Midwifes! There are different types of Midwifes, as many have mentioned. There are a variety of pathways into midwifery. Check out http://www.midwife.org for Certified Nurse Midwife Check out http://www.mana.org for Certified Professional Midwife Info Now for the confusing part! Yes CPM midwifery is still illegal in some states (even if that midwife is certified) but the majority do recognize Midwifery as a profession.
  16. Our school uses Iggy too, and I used ATI. I noticed ATI cites Iggy often. Good Luck!
  17. Correct me if I am wrong but an LPN is a license. An RN is a license plus a degree. Go for the degree.
  18. I haven't read all the responses, but thought I would respond. I lean to the natural side of things & try not to medicate my kids. I get where your friend is coming from. One thing that strikes me odd in your post is you say she does not used medicine, but called you in the middle of the night when a fever did not respond to Tylenol? Curious why she gave Tylenol if she uses only holistic ways. Most wait until fever is higher than that to medicate. Anyway....since she calls all the time & does not do what you say, I think you need to have a conversation that explains that while you understand that she calls you for advice, because you are an RN. But since she clearly does not follow said advice, ask her not to call about medical issues any more. She can call her Naturalpath, her Chiro, her acupuncturist instead. Tell her it is your license. Good Luck!!!
  19. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/17/health/research/17circ.html?_r=1&ref=health Actually it was 32.5 in 2009, even less than I thought.
  20. 2011nursingstudent, that is an old statistic. We could not even use that in a paper in our school, too old. While I do not have an actual article handy, the rate right now is about 50% are circ'd. America is slowly waking up to this medically unnecessary procedure.
  21. Actions speak louder than age! We have a few 30yr old's acting immature than some 20yr olds!
  22. I did not read all the responses, but thought I would comment real quick. I too, am not for routine male circ, so when I was in maternity, I just kept my mouth shut, think that if it came up then I would say something. Well it came up & I had an opportunity to observe, but I quietly told my CI that I could not do that. She said that's fine. No biggie. I did something else instead. Good Luck to you!!!
  23. Where is your physical assessment??? I would put pain as first priority, then impaired mobility, then risk for injury & then knowledge deficit.
  24. I am at SBVC & we see RCC students @ clinical & they are fine nursing students. All the CC ADN programs seem to produce really good nurses in this area. Good Luck!
