Patients are often placed on protonix or a med in its class to help prevent GERD issues due to the stress and medications they may get. Therefore, if pt has no history of GERD it is a prophylactic drug. Depending on when the patient had surgery and how they are doing hemodynamically will determine the reason for the IV fluids.

My ultimate desired areas are the NICU, PICU, or Pediatrics. I have a passion for working with sick babies and/or children!

It takes me about 20 minutes to get to school. The drive for clinical takes me anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour depending on where I am scheduled.

Hi there! I just wanted to say congrats for being accepted into the program. I attend Lakeview as well, however, I am at the Charleston campus. I will be in my final semester this fall!!! The program is great, although difficult at times. The biggest piece of advice I have to give you both is DON"T GIVE UP! I won't lie to you...there are times you will feel that you can't do it...but you can! I feel the first semester is the hardest because you are just getting used to nursing school, the NCLEX type tests, and the course load but I promise you that it gets better. I absolutely loved my Psych rotation! To be honest, I was absolutely petrified when I first started because I had know idea what I would be dealing with in clinical, but my first couple of times on the units totally put me at ease. The hospital that I did my clinical at had 3 different psych units...adult, adult intensive, and adolescent. Of course, my favorite was the adolescent unit. We didn't do much patient care except basics like vitals and once my fellow classmate and I gave a wheelchair bound client a bed bath because he needed it greatly( both my classmate and I were very nervous at first because he was on the intensive unit and had no idea what we were about to encounter, but he actually was a very nice guy!) I learned a lot from this class and have given thought to it being a possible area to work in once I graduate.

Yay! I have one week as well! I am so ready for this semester and I have a feeling it is going to be my best semester yet!

I am getting ready to start my 3rd semester and would really like to work in L&D, NICU, or Peds! I have always wanted to do this since I was a child. Of course if I have to start off on the Adult unit that is just fine!

We have to have a 77 at our school and of course there is no rounding here either.

We have navy blue pants and a white polo with our school emblem embroidered on the left side of the chest. I could do without the white, but I am glad that we don't have white pants like I have seen a lot of schools have.

I have to drive 25 minutes to campus 4 days a week, and two days a week I have to drive 45 minutes to clinicals. I hate having to drive so far, but the experience (especially for clinicals) is well worth it. Next semester I have clinicals in two different cities 45-50 minutes away in opposite directions..

I am working on a health history report for my health assessment class and have a question about one of the subjects we are supposed to touch on. All it states is "use of safety measures." I have looked in my book (Jarvis) and can't find any information related to this. I also have looked online, but there is so much information to sort through. Can someone point me in the right direction? TIA for any help.

I passed my medication calc test with a 100%!!!! We had to get a 100% and if you didn't you get two more tries and you can't pass meds in clinicals until you pass it. There's a little weight off my shoulders...and I do mean little. LOL. Everyone is welcome to share their joys on this thread as well. It is always nice to see the positive stuff instead of all of the negative we usually see and hear.

I just took my fundamentals test on Monday. Our grades were posted this morning and I got a B. Not exactly what I wanted, but hey I will take it for the first test. 2nd and 3rd semesters students said that a lot of people fail the first test. It is difficult getting used to the style of testing, but we will get used to it fast. :) Good luck on your test!!

My uniform consists of a white polo shirt with our school logo on the left side above the heart, and Landau navy blue eased fit scrub pants. We also have a white lab coat with our school logo patched on the left sleeve. Also, like the majority of you we have to wear all white shoes, with no color markings and white socks or hose. Could be better, but could be worse. LOL.

You sound like me! I have worked 3rd shift for almost 9 years and 2years of those I have been attending class all day as well. My NS schedule is kind of rough, but I am sure I will adjust my sleep schedule accordingly..lol. And yes, it sounds weird, but I also feel like I can do better on tests when I have been working all night. Of course, I can study at work.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone has taken the ATI for critical thinking. If you have, could you tell me what it involves? There was a critical thinking portion we had to take on the HESI 2 and I am wondering if its anything like that. We will be taking it the second week of classes and I am kind of nervous about it. Of course, I am very nervous about starting my first semester as a nursing student anyway..LOL. Any advice would be appreciated.

I am right there with you!! I just got home from getting all of my books for this semester which is making it all more real, and it will be even more so when I go to orientation on Thursday!! Of course right now I am complete sticker shock from paying for those books...over $1000!!

I just got my rejection email today as well! I am lucky to have all my tuition and books covered, but I have nothing left over for supplies. I do work full time, but I solely support a family of 3 and most often only bring home enough to pay the bills and put food on the table, with no extras. The extra money from scholarships would have been nice to help with the living expenses during school. Especially if it ends up that I have to cut my hours back in order to do better in school. It really sucks, I didn't get any scholarships through my school either. But, I am keeping my chin up and applying for other scholarships. I don't know if any of you know about it, but there is a site(fastweb.com) that will take your demographics and other things and sort out any scholarships you may be eligible for and gives you the links. If you haven't tried it, its worth a shot! Good luck to everyone in your nursing school career!!

Reading about all of you having orientation already is making me even more excited/nervous. I have orientation from 9am-3:30pm on Aug 19th and start class Aug 23rd. I have heard that our orientation consists of going over the school handbook(which is available online as well), meeting instructors and faculty of the college, taking photos for our student profile and getting to know the other students. Other than that I am not sure what we will be doing in that 6 1/2 hour time frame. I just know that I can't wait to get started and am counting down the days!!
