At the end of my rope...
Dear OP, I am actually glad that you are done with bedside nursing. I am also glad that the medical director strongly felt that s/he needed someone with clinical experience rather than you. As a infection control nurse, you will need first hand experience on actual INFECTION CONTROL methods from AN ACTUAL RN POINT OF VIEW. You will need to know, first hand, the family's role in causing/preventing infection, the medical staff's routines, and how you can use all that information to keep the hospital's HAI rates down. Having a master's degree is not enough dear. I feel that there has to be a fire in the belly, a passion, a REASON for wanting to do this. The money will never be enough. I am sick of nurses who treat patients and their families as an inconvenience. You have a job BECAUSE OF THEM. So yeah, call the kitchen and tell them to send up another meal, cuz whatever they dished out is not cutting it.Sympathize that they dont have a flat screen tv, cuz yeah, this is the ferking 21st century. Tell them who to talk to about that too. Yes, they should be able to spend time with their family without sitting on each other's lap. Tell them who to complain about that too. If you hate making people happy so bad, STAY THE HECK OUT OF NURSING. My soliloquy has ended.

and everyone's... OK with this?
Sadly, the new grad salary is the same that I made as a CNA in CT many moons ago. It is a very expensive place to live, but I was saving half of my salary per month.

Diversity.. at what price?
All Im saying is that if you work in a highly diversified place where you cant understand your coworkers, it is best to find another job. Yeah, the defensive replies brought a nice smirk to my face.
-
Diversity.. at what price?
A small amount of sincere understanding and willingness to learn and appreciate another culture can go a long way. If the OP is of the mindset that diversity is an option, which in many locations it is not, then she clearly would be better off where s/he viewpoints on diversity is welcomed.

Diversity.. at what price?
Ithink that it is best for you to seek employment where you dont have to worry about dealing with accents . Your patients deserve a nurse who is open minded, and non judgemental.

Your one stop for all the most popular pressing questions on allnurses!
There seems to be an overwhelming dislike for being pretty and skinny. So the rumors are true: old fat ugly nurses like to eat the pretty skinny ones.

Transferring to another unit
I need to transfer to another unit. I am one of those who cant stand gossiping, and the constant yakking is driving me crazy! How do I request a transfer sucessfully without letting my NM know that I dislike my coworkers?

How come a foreign nurse can find a job but American nurses can't?
I sincerely understand that is very hard for you to see. 1. Because they have an accent they are not considered American. 2. Because they are black with an accent they are assumed to be from Africa. 3. Because they have an accent, they are unable to speak Standard English. 4. Because they are black, with an accent and knowledge of a second language, they are not American. Therefore they do not deserve their job. The white girl who is unable to speak a second language and says she is Amercan should have gotten the job instead. Even though she didnt apply for it. I suppose the next step is to demand a birth certificate.

How come a foreign nurse can find a job but American nurses can't?
I also find it very interesting that the argument that foreign nurses are here to "take our jobs" is used so often. Are you really telling me that you are so insecure in your skills that you are unable to compete at the international level? That you need de facto or dejure hiring discrimination to be successfull? Maybe then we should push for a revolution in the American education system; resulting in world class professional classwho know that they can compete any day of the week against any other country, in any profession.

How come a foreign nurse can find a job but American nurses can't?
I know that you meant well, but I would like you to consider a couple points. Our minds are very powerful tools that can amazingly twist even benign situations. Hence the reason that people with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, and Acute Paranoia and multiple other psychiatric patients somehow interpret everyday data as threatening or dangerous. The point, if you are clearly so prejudiced in your mind, nothing that the black nurses said will be clear to you, no matter how competent and thoughful they are. The nurses that you are describing are not the kind that can be hired at any hospital. I have lived and worked in both major cities and very rural areas. Areas so remote that I was asked direct questions by children as " why are your skin so brown?". However, I have an excellent work history and a resume, and have been able to repeatedly use my stellar work reputation as insurance againt people who are unable to accept that the color of my skin has nothing to do with my competence level. If you are complaining on this website, I am sure that you complained to their nurse manager. I can almost bet that s/he rooted for them.

My Microbiology Teacher told me I can't become a Nurse
You have said enough for me to know that this "person" is biased against you. She is not a nurse, many doctors out there dont have the guts and strenght to walk a mile in a nurse's shoes. Tell her where to stcik it and never let anyone ruin your goals. BTW, if that is all it takes to get you to give up on your dreams..............
-
It's official I give up can't find a job anywhere
Did you know that it was the BSN that was going to open doors for you?

Many New Grads......
The beauty of the nursing profession is that there are soooooooooooooo many opportunities to reinvent yourself. Please dont try to sell the BS that even though you dont like your job, and hate working with a bunch of backstabbing B***hes, that you will never embrace the opportunity to move on to higher grounds and greener pastures.

Why do so many nurses from the Philippines come to Canada/USA?
It must be very hard for the OP to understand the desire to travel and see the world. I am guessing that the OP has never been out the 50 mile radius of her small town. Why dont you try to leave the tiny box that you live in and go get a job in Alaska, or Hawaii, or the Phillipines? Just for the experience?

The LPN trap
Hi All, Has anyone ever transitioned from a LPN working in long term care to the hospital setting? I was speaking with an RN who had worked as a LPN in home care while in RN school. She has never been able to get a job out of long term care. Do you think that being a LPN can be limiting to career prospects? Maddie

Ever had a nursing instructor hate you?
I feel that you reminded the instructor of a past student, and took all of the frustration and anger that she had with that past student on you. YOu didnt stand a chance in hell. Action plan: 1. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. 2. Let the Dean/Provost know that you are being treated unfairly, (DOCUMENT RESPONSES) 3. Contact a lawyer to write a letter for you detainling events, and what you want to be done. I know that this is a huge step for you, but I know that it will work cuz, your prof is bullying you and most bullies are cowards. Getting legal representation shows that you are no wuss and is not going down with out a fight. I am pretty sure that the student policy manual details that every student have a right to freedom from verbal abuse, including demeaning statements. BTW, why is my gut telling me that you are black and the "person" is white?

students who don't seem to study and do so well
Allow me to let you see how you look to the other girl who gets by easily. There is this girl in my class that is so unfriendly to me. I have no clue why she gets upset whenever she finds out that I did great in my exams. I think that she is the kind of person that likes to see others fail. I dont understand why she is not doing so well. She studies so hard! Maybe she should go speak to someone who can give her a IQ test. OP, nursing school is the easiest thing I have done my entire life. I cant remember the last time I touched a textbook, and my GPA is way above a 3.5. Accept the fact that some people's cognitive capacities are different from yours.

Boss Keeps Asking Me to Lunch
I know that you are a guy, so you may have a hard time understanding some kinds of female petty behavior. Allow me to break it down for you. 1. The facility lead nurse may (MAY) be jealous of the relationship b/w you and your boss. Read: She wants to be the one to go to lunch with him. Find out what you can of the current relationship status b/w the boss and insecure nurse. You might find out that they were in a relationship before, or she is trying to suck up to him, or something like that. 2. Invite her along too when you guys go out to lunch. Notice that she is the only one complaining. She is the only one who cares to be taken out to lunch. 3. Speak to your boss about what she said to you. NEVER keep negative behavior a secret. That will only paint you into an uncomfortable corner. 4. You are allowed to have meaningful professional relationships, even at work. 5. Consider the possibility that she may be trying to get rid of you, but cant because of the good relationship that you have with higher ups. (Thus, unable to alienate and manipulate). You need to let your boss know of her nasty conversation. That will stop all this BS immediately. 6. I would watch my back if I were you.

Is anyone willing to give me a idea of how to go about have a slight clue as to how to be prepared for this, and not look like an idiot in fron of my instructor.

Qoute "If you quit, I will report you to the state B.O.N.!!!!!!"
Here is your plan of action. 1. Get a attorney. 2. File a harrassment and workplace violence suit. 3. REAP $. That DON thinks that you dont have the guts to defend yourself, so she will do as she pleases. Give her a holiday surprise.

Is the universe trying to tell me something????
I literally just had a discussion with my husband 1/2 an hour ago about going into nursing. He hates seeing me come home exhausted, tired and dealing with backstabbing ******* all day. Dont do it hon, it is not worth it.
-
What is your biggest nursing pet peeve?
I notice that these old nurses are really the ones doing most of the back stabbing too.
-
preceptor/preceptee, hanging by a thread.
The reason why the seasoned nurse do the bed bath first thing is because you can do assessments and VS right there while doing bath. Start thinking of some shortcuts. Dont be afriad of being creative, and tell your preceptor thta you dont appreciate being bullied. Amazing things happen when you stand up for yourself.
