  1. Dear OP, I am actually glad that you are done with bedside nursing. I am also glad that the medical director strongly felt that s/he needed someone with clinical experience rather than you. As a infection control nurse, you will need first hand experience on actual INFECTION CONTROL methods from AN ACTUAL RN POINT OF VIEW. You will need to know, first hand, the family's role in causing/preventing infection, the medical staff's routines, and how you can use all that information to keep the hospital's HAI rates down. Having a master's degree is not enough dear. I feel that there has to be a fire in the belly, a passion, a REASON for wanting to do this. The money will never be enough. I am sick of nurses who treat patients and their families as an inconvenience. You have a job BECAUSE OF THEM. So yeah, call the kitchen and tell them to send up another meal, cuz whatever they dished out is not cutting it.Sympathize that they dont have a flat screen tv, cuz yeah, this is the ferking 21st century. Tell them who to talk to about that too. Yes, they should be able to spend time with their family without sitting on each other's lap. Tell them who to complain about that too. If you hate making people happy so bad, STAY THE HECK OUT OF NURSING. My soliloquy has ended.
  2. Sadly, the new grad salary is the same that I made as a CNA in CT many moons ago. It is a very expensive place to live, but I was saving half of my salary per month.
  3. All Im saying is that if you work in a highly diversified place where you cant understand your coworkers, it is best to find another job. Yeah, the defensive replies brought a nice smirk to my face.
  4. A small amount of sincere understanding and willingness to learn and appreciate another culture can go a long way. If the OP is of the mindset that diversity is an option, which in many locations it is not, then she clearly would be better off where s/he viewpoints on diversity is welcomed.
  5. Ithink that it is best for you to seek employment where you dont have to worry about dealing with accents . Your patients deserve a nurse who is open minded, and non judgemental.
  6. There seems to be an overwhelming dislike for being pretty and skinny. So the rumors are true: old fat ugly nurses like to eat the pretty skinny ones.
  7. This unit is where i want to work is basically an independent role. I will be by myself. Ill give anything for peace and quiet.
  8. I need to transfer to another unit. I am one of those who cant stand gossiping, and the constant yakking is driving me crazy! How do I request a transfer sucessfully without letting my NM know that I dislike my coworkers?
  9. I sincerely understand that is very hard for you to see. 1. Because they have an accent they are not considered American. 2. Because they are black with an accent they are assumed to be from Africa. 3. Because they have an accent, they are unable to speak Standard English. 4. Because they are black, with an accent and knowledge of a second language, they are not American. Therefore they do not deserve their job. The white girl who is unable to speak a second language and says she is Amercan should have gotten the job instead. Even though she didnt apply for it. I suppose the next step is to demand a birth certificate.
  10. I also find it very interesting that the argument that foreign nurses are here to "take our jobs" is used so often. Are you really telling me that you are so insecure in your skills that you are unable to compete at the international level? That you need de facto or dejure hiring discrimination to be successfull? Maybe then we should push for a revolution in the American education system; resulting in world class professional classwho know that they can compete any day of the week against any other country, in any profession.
  11. I know that you meant well, but I would like you to consider a couple points. Our minds are very powerful tools that can amazingly twist even benign situations. Hence the reason that people with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, and Acute Paranoia and multiple other psychiatric patients somehow interpret everyday data as threatening or dangerous. The point, if you are clearly so prejudiced in your mind, nothing that the black nurses said will be clear to you, no matter how competent and thoughful they are. The nurses that you are describing are not the kind that can be hired at any hospital. I have lived and worked in both major cities and very rural areas. Areas so remote that I was asked direct questions by children as " why are your skin so brown?". However, I have an excellent work history and a resume, and have been able to repeatedly use my stellar work reputation as insurance againt people who are unable to accept that the color of my skin has nothing to do with my competence level. If you are complaining on this website, I am sure that you complained to their nurse manager. I can almost bet that s/he rooted for them.
  12. You have said enough for me to know that this "person" is biased against you. She is not a nurse, many doctors out there dont have the guts and strenght to walk a mile in a nurse's shoes. Tell her where to stcik it and never let anyone ruin your goals. BTW, if that is all it takes to get you to give up on your dreams..............
  13. Did you know that it was the BSN that was going to open doors for you?
  14. The beauty of the nursing profession is that there are soooooooooooooo many opportunities to reinvent yourself. Please dont try to sell the BS that even though you dont like your job, and hate working with a bunch of backstabbing B***hes, that you will never embrace the opportunity to move on to higher grounds and greener pastures.
  15. It must be very hard for the OP to understand the desire to travel and see the world. I am guessing that the OP has never been out the 50 mile radius of her small town. Why dont you try to leave the tiny box that you live in and go get a job in Alaska, or Hawaii, or the Phillipines? Just for the experience?
