Disgusting! Stealing from a nursing home resident...
There definately are people who will steal from residents. However, there are also a lot of residents who misplace things or imagine things or just plain out want to cause waves. Sometimes it is hard to figure out what is going on when you are dealing with people with dementia that maybe aren't all together to begin with. If someone is stealing this persons beanie babies though, perhaps their family needs to talk to the nurse and see what can be done. Maybe they can be put away in a safe secure place. For all you know, maybe his family had his beanie babies locked up as it is and the resident keeps forgetting that they are in storage and is just assuming people are stealing them. You never know.

Getting into an ADN program
Why would you go to a university and then transfer over to a community college? Why not just get your prereqs done at the community college you plan on transfering to. I've had a LOT of advisors screw up my schedules before and put me into classes that wouldn't count at another school so if you can start at the school you want to end up at you'd be better off. Not to mention junior colleges are way cheaper.

military separation
Would having an entry level separation from the military make me inelgible to sit for the nclex? My dd214 says under reason for separation 'errenous enlistment', I don't know if that is relevant or not.

Did anyone who Graduated from Excelsior College had problems when trying.
You have to be careful with any of these distance education schools just because there are a few states out there who won't let you take the boards. I believe Illinois is one of them and it does not recognize excelsior. I'd love to get my RN eventually through distance education, but it just feels a lot safer to stick to the traditional route.

What are your interests?
I'm still a student nurse so maybe there are rockier roads ahead, but I enjoyed nutrition and even my cna class and I love reading about health related materials, but so far I can't stand anatomy and physiology. I mean I'm learning it, but I absolutely despise it. This is my second time taking it because I'm having such problems forcing myself to be interested in it. It is getting more interesting now that we are getting into the body systems and actually dissecting, but the whole identifying epithelial tissue and hyaline cartilage and all that stuff I just don't get and doubt I ever will. Hopefully its not a skill I'm going to need in nursing because all that tissue looks the same to me.

Also Ran Careers... what did you decide against before choosing nursing
I'm going for my lpn right now, but I'm considering going for my english degree afterwards. Go to school on a part time basis and then maybe teach high school english in a few years and do nursing per diem work in the summer. Don't really know. The opportunities are endless.

Only 4 periods a year!!
You can usually skip periods with a lot of birth control...you don't necessarily have to take the special 'seasonal' one. I'm on the nuvaring and my doctor told me instead of taking the ring out for a week break to just insert a new ring right away, and I avoid periods that way. With other pills *not all pills...I don't think this works with the triphasic kind* you just continue into a new pack and don't take the placebo pills. If money is an issue for you, you might want to talk to your doctor about that and then you can get a generic brand.

I couldn't believe my ears!!!!
Ah I'm just a student nurse, so I'm still learning about Hippa laws. I just assumed that would be confidential. I'm surprised it isn't.

I couldn't believe my ears!!!!
How could you tell the girls parents without breaking confidentiality? While I do agree that this girl is being extremely naive and stupid, I know MANY women who had children as a teenager and they are wonderful parents who are not on welfare. Teen pregnancy is definately something that should be avoided, and its appalling that some girls are actually trying to get pregnant, but to say that all teen mothers become drains on the system isn't right. Most do, but not all...specially if they have family supporting them both emotionally and financially.

Nurses crossing picket lines??
Wow coming from a family of blue collared workers, I'm extremely offended. Get off your high horse. Being a "professional" doesn't make you better then anyone else. Blue collared workers aren't ignorant people, they just picked a different profession and thank god someone did because we need our plumbers and electricians and garbage men. They work hard and they deserve good working conditions just as nurses do, and I don't see how picketing for better working conditions is a bad thing. Sometimes it is the only way to get administrators to listen.

Brand New Nurse Expectations
Oh I hate jobs like that. I had a receptionist job when I was 17, and because I didn't pick up on doing invoices and all these other new skills right away that the girl who was there before me could do, I was deemed incompetent. The girl before me had been there for over two years, but my boss didn't even give me two days to figure out how things were run. I hate jobs where your bosses make you feel stupid and uncomfortable. I'm sure you could find a hospital that didn't treat you that way though.

Depressed about job experiences as CNA
I remember when I was doing my cna clinicals...we'd get a fifteen minute break and a 30 minute lunch break and we were only there for 6 hours so I would never eat on either. I'm unemployed so I don't exactly like wasting my money on pop and candy bars anyways, but my classmates would always give me such a hard time about it. They'd do it in a playful manner, but it was rude. Females are rude. Females are also jealous. You do need to try and stick a job out for awhile though...quitting two jobs in such a short period of time is going to make it hard for you to be hired anywhere else.

Undressing for Group Sports Physical
umm well even in the military we got to wear our underwear. That doesn't seem right. They shouldn't have to be humiliated in order to get a physical. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable in a situation like that. Sorry I don't really have any advice though.

When in uniform?!?!?!?!?
- When in uniform?!?!?!?!?
Customer service jobs aren't much better. You get cussed at and threatened for many things that are completely out of your control. I worked at this huge nursery department store and the other departments never put price tags or barcodes on any of the merchandise so as a cashier I was constantly doing price checks. Of course the same idiots in back would take fifteen minutes to get me the sku numbers so for those fifteen minutes the customer would be cussing me out. Oh I also worked at a video store on the fourth of july and our manager had a strict policy against letting customers use our employer bathroom since there was tons of merchandise in the room, this guy actually threatened to have his kid piss on our floor if we didn't let him use the bathroom...then he proceeded to tell me he was going to kill me. Come on, at least nurses make more then minimum wage. You knew you were going to get pissed on, barfed on, and **** on when you went into nursing. Try not to let your bad days at work influence how you treat others outside of work. A little respect, even for minimum wage workers at a coffee shop, goes a real long way.- Do you skip a lot of classes if attendance isn't taken? Be honest!
Oh yea I've skipped most of my classes...but eh I have a 4.0 so I can't be doing that bad. I don't think that it is that the classes are too easy, more like some people do a better job of teaching themselves then listening to someone else drone on and on. I took psychology as a telecourse and it was a lifesaver because then I didn't have to feel guilty about skipping classes, I just taught myself the content. Of course though, once I start my actual nursing classes this summer, I will not be missing one class. Some things are easier to teach yourself then others. I need to be in class so I can take notes and ask questions.- The way people can be just amazes me
hmmm in my CNA class we got our final class grades back and one of my classmates looked over my shoulder at mine and he remarked very loudly in a condescending tone "YOU got a 97%, how?". I fought the urge to kick him, but whatever some people are stupid. Ignore them and just chalk it up to jealously.- sick nurses
Sounds like the place I did my CNA clinicals at. Kind of a silly rule. You can be sick and contagious, but have normal vital signs.- Anyone else dislike the nursing home?
I remember coming home from my first day of cna clinicals and calling my parents and telling them that if I could help it I would never ever ever put them in a nursing home. The smell alone is enough to knock you out when you walk in, and its just so depressing...everyone is so unhappy. The residents get cranky and hit you, the CNAs are rushed to get everything done so quickly they neglect the simple things like drying a residents hair so she doesn't get cold...its just sad. I mean most of the people have pressure sores oozing everywhere, barely any of them can walk..I mean for being these peoples 'homes' they are just very depressing places. I'm not sure if I could ever work in a nursing home.- Mamma's Boys (vent)
I will glady wipe my mother's butt in the future rather then putting her in a nursing home. As for my father, I have two brothers that can do that for him. I don't see whats wrong with taking care of your parents. You act as though its a bad thing that some children care for their parents. I'd much rather watch my parents in their old age then put them in a nursing home. Some nursing homes are ok, but most I've seen are not...I'd never want my parents in one ever. As God is my witness I will never put my parents in a nursing home unless its under the most dire circumstances and I have no other choice.- Speaking Spanish Helpful?
Well thats your opinion, I just find it ugly. I don't think thats ignorant, its just a matter of opinion. Was that not politically correct enough for you? I have nothing against hispanics, I just don't like the spanish language and I never wanted to learn it. I find other languages ugly too...I think gaelic is ugly and I'm irish.- Speaking Spanish Helpful?
You can't argue the benefits of knowing spanish in the US today, but it doesn't seem fair to be forced into learning someone elses native language when they are the ones immigrating over here. I learned a foreign language in high school, but while my whole family wanted me to take spanish because of how 'useful' it would be, I never wanted to learn it. Its an ugly language to me, I have no want to learn it...and when you don't want to learn something you usually don't. I picked french, not quite as useful, but it was fun for me. If someone wants to look down on me in the future for not speaking spanish that's fine, I'll just continually wonder why they won't learn english.- Speaking Spanish Helpful?

This won't help much, but the NP I see for my women health issues is a FNP and not a women's health NP. I don't really know if that is the norm or not though. It is hard to find schools that offer WHNP though, so I'd assume there are more FNPs around.- Chicago vs. Pennsylvania??
I grew up in Oak forest and New lenox, and Orland park and Tinley are VERY good areas. There is however a lot of traffic because of the mall in Orland. I know Orland schools are great though and its a low crime area. Still a bit of a commute to Chicago though. At least an hour there by train. Research the areas a bit and I'm sure you will find a place that fits you. - When in uniform?!?!?!?!?
