BTW I found it easier to get a job in a critical access hospital in a small town. Then you can move on after a year or make a career in a varied environment.

This happened to me but I was told they were hiring so many new grads they didn't want to add my 4 years home health experience to the mix. I found out later the ratio there was 8 to 1 whereas I am now at 5 to 1 with better pay. So there's that!

I really enjoy rehab. If you complete the various chartings throughout the day you'll feel great about your work. Braden s and sepsis screens by 9am, assessment s by noon, education and FIMs by 5 and care plans and note by 6pm. Of course med passes and cbgs as ordered. The time suckers are toileting and problem solving with dietician s, therapy and your CNAs. A sharp active cna is essential. You will get so much satisfaction watching you patient s get active again.

I plan to take this soon. To become certified you have to show previous experience or work with a certified nurse. I have been reading the Wocn textbook from Amaon to prepare. If you don't have a bsn and don't live or work near the wta sites or Emory... go for wcc. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

Regarding sputum samples they're not even supposed to have saliva in them so I'm pretty sure vomit would be bad. The acid could kill the bacilli or interfere with the dyes

Yeah rank=degrees from college. Some people know just eniugh to get by, that's in all fields. Yeah he should know this stuff but asking theses questions multiple times shows a problem. He is brave enough to ask. I'd try to jump through that RN hoop to get the pay you deserve.

Wow, such hard first years. I was able to finish all my non nursing courses before nursing school so that helped alot. My nursing instructors were poor teachers, I had the worst 2 years of my life in nursing school. And that's including birthing and raising 6 kids to adulthood. My first job was Home Health and Hospice. I've since moved to acute care. I loved HH and would recommend it as a first posting. You learn assessments, wound care, foleys and PICC line care really well. I found med surg faster paced than I enjoy which makes it very intimidating for a new grad.

Nurse managers are strongly linked to job satisfaction. Managers who are not trained lack the necessary communication and leaderships skills. Favoritism abounds and poor performance is tolerated. Poor performers are not eliminated. Poor management ultimately results in turnover. This is what's true for me. Managers being nonsupportive, condescending or just plain disorganized. Managers who demand a solution from the nurse but don't implement any that are offered. Managers that simply believe pts complaints even when they are pt fantasy with witnesses to RNs story. Getting a group reprimand. Who did it? Not me but I get to share in the nastygram.

We used Nystatin powder on a fulminating cancer wound of a hospice pt. So yeast or fungal different meds. But Dakins would help it all.

HH is great. I started as a new grad 2.5 years ago. I'm now confident and effective. I have saved people's lives and given them teaching and training to change their lives and improve their health. This is a good place to start your career if you like chronic conditions and have good self confidence. Of course I work for a supportive company/non-profit.

I got a job with home health. They do hire new grads and will train you. I don't want to hear how they shouldn't I will be fine. I really like my little agency and am confident I will be a great HH nurse.

I love mine. My Walmart has some for $6 for 2 pair(near the pharmacy). They aren't as good of quality as the expensive ones but they are good enough. Not all Walmarts have them though. They really make a difference. Measure your calf and foot sizes. If you have big feet just buy mens size Medium.

My program was not as terrible as yours but if I could have transferred I would have. If they will take you as a transfer student it would be great. My second year I just kept my head down, obeyed every stupid rule and repeated "I will stay positive". I am so glad to be away from the petty teachers and the totally un-supportive program. (Is that a bash? If the shoe fits (they should) wear it! or change it.)

I hope to be starting in the same situation and wonder if anyone has a brain sheet for clinic visits too.

I did for 3 years and it was worth it. I recommend you listen to MP3's of nursing lectures like Pat Heyman and watch and later listen to henneger on you tube. My textbooks also had summaries on line that you could play early on to give you a better understanding before you even cover the chapter

I wonder about the tightness of the weave required in the OR. Do we need to adhere to that on the floor?

Thank you for your post OP. I find the analogy to back pain illuminating. To my black friend who has confided in me: While my elbow pain is not back pain it gives me a small insight into what you are going through. Like intractable back pain I can't really know how pervasive and difficult this is for you. My (pre-analogy) apparent denial of your pain is really a desire that such pain *should* not exist. I know your value because you are my friend, it IS so unfair that others do not see you or your pain as legitimate. Unfortunately, just like with back pain, some nurses and other people say, "You are just seeking attention". Also, unfortunately, I do not have any medications or non-pharmacological methods of pain relief except listening and empathizing. OP: do you have other methods of relief I can offer for back pain? Thank you for this insight.

Ours is 92 = A; 82= B; 75= C Less than 75 is failing We have to average 75 or above on all tests and 75 or above on other stuff- papers etc I wish we had pluses and minuses because my 91 B is right now equal to an 83 B. I'd like the extra half point on my GPA

You are an excellent writer. That is useful for nursing school. I was in a program in high school called Health Ancillary Training Service. and was able to work my whole senior year, 3 hours a day, at several hospitals in my area including UC Davis Medical Center. This was great for my career because I was exposed to all the different departments in the hospital. You've gotten good advice about where to volunteer for the next couple of years. 4H also has summer camps to give you more experience with children. Good Luck.

Each one of you is correct. We can stop after the second term of year 2 and go on to OHSU without getting our RN OR We can finish the CC program (take the NCLEX), and take that beginning term in the summer and take 3 more terms the next year to finish the BSN. So 4 terms to the BSN. SO----- anyone done this yet? No one from my school has skipped the NCLEX and gotten the BSN instead of an ADN and I don't plan to, but I'm interested in what you have done.

I'm in my first year at an OCNE school. They tell us we are already eligible for OHSUs BSN transfer program which is apparently all online. Has anyone done this? What is it like? How hard is it to accomplish when you are working as a new grad nurse? What does it actually end up costing you?

I think it would be fantastic to work at Johns Hopkins. Take it and get a house big enough for vacationers from Boston. This would be a dream come true.

I would take chemistry it has more to do with pharm. and it is an easier class.
