  1. My friend bought me a pair of white Skechers Shape Ups for graduation- I work 12s and they are awesome- so comfortable! They were weird at first since they are rounded, but I got used to them quickly and now I can't even tell they are shaped "weird". Good luck!
  2. Don't be discouraged...I graduated last March, got licensed in April, and did not start my job until November. I had to relocate, and its a small hospital...but its Med-Surg and its everything I wanted. I could have had a job sooner, but I refused to work LTC after I tried it for 5 days...(no training, a zillion patients, wasn't willing to risk my new license). I love my job now...hang in there, expand your search, get reference letters from old instructors, and keep trying! Good luck!
  3. Thanks for the info Laborofluv- I did check out the forms online, and I started doing the modules when I was going to sign on with that agency, but the agency didn't give me a very good vibe, and now I won't have the time, especially since my hosp. orientation is full time for 12 weeks and a 100 mile commute (one-way). I do plan to move closer, but for now its only a casual position, so if and when I'm offered full-time that's when I'll move. But if they keep me casual, I will be sure to contact you to see if you need help at your agency- I was licensed in April... thanks again!! :)
  4. I'm actually not doing that...I had planned on it, but got into a hospital instead!! It seems very interesting though, and right up my alley. I start my new hospital job in 11 days! Wish me luck!
  5. I'm going to agree with nearly all the other posters and offer my 2 cents- DON'T do it! $10/hr? For an RN? I would ask them if they are serious! Good luck- I think there are bigger things out there for you. As a new grad myself, I can relate to the struggle of finding a job. I've been a licensed RN since April and I FINALLY got into a hospital- a small rural hospital but I couldn't be more thrilled- I start in 11 days!!
  6. Hi all, As a new grad I just got a job with a home care agency doing the Maternal Infant Health Program. Sounds pretty great, and since I want to be a L&D nurse, its right up my alley. FYI, I also have a BA in Psych. I was just wondering if anyone has done this- I'd love to get some info from some nurses who have worked for the program. I haven't started yet, so I'm wondering what I'm getting into :) Also, the agency pays $40 per visit, no mileage or gas. Is this normal? High? Low? Thanks for any info/advice!
  7. I did a very similar thing recently- took the same shift (3-1130) at an LTC facility and with 5 days orientation as a brand new grad...I lasted 2 days on my own and never came back. I was so stressed and so scared of losing my license or God forbid someone getting hurt that I couldn't do it. It wasn't worth it. Please listen to the above posters and myself when we say RUN!!!
  8. If she is developmentally 12 months old, then just tailor the G&D goals to that of a 12-month-old?? Maybe I'm being too simplistic, just a thought :)
  9. The above poster is absolutely right. Yes, you can do this!! Good luck!
  10. I got a BA in Psych in 2003- Couldn't do very much with it-worked for peanuts as a foster care case worker and burned out quick-- decided since I love helping people and find medicine just fascinating that I would become a nurse!
  11. To answer the OP question in one word...ABSOLUTELY!
  12. I also started out with no experience in the health care field, and I was super nervous too- I hadn't taken a blood pressure either-- DON'T worry, like the other poster said, they will all assume you know nothing, so its okay! I'm now in my 3rd quarter and got to see babies being born!! (Very cool by the way!) You've already done a lot of preparing, so don't stress already- you will stress enough when nursing school actually starts! One thing I would recommend if you want to get a jump start is start reading the discussion boards about assessment skills- we had to take an assessment class, and we do head-to-toes in clinicals starting on day one. I still miss stuff- it's one of those things that will get better with practice but if you read an re-read the steps at least you'll know what to do, even though it will take experience to know what you're hearing and feeling and what it all means. At least you will know WHAT to feel and hear!! :) Good luck to you as you start this journey!
  13. Very first week of clinical- took an oral temp with a rectal thermometer- they looked EXACTLY the same but one was RED! It was reading really low so I asked a fellow classmate to take it and she took it with the same one, not realizing it either. The room nurse pointed it out to us! Fessed up to my instructor right away- she didn't freak out, but I felt like an idiot. Thank God for probe covers, but still! GROSS!! Also, I threw away the TOP of an ampule in the regular trash instead of the sharps container- the nurse I was shadowing made me feel like a real dummy! Live and Learn! Thank God those weren't major! Hope this will help any new students....
  14. The HESI is on the computer- you don't need a scantron- everything you need is on the computer. You get your results along with an extensive breakdown of your scores for each section before you walk out of the test. Good luck to you- once you get in its a hard road, but it has been done! :) As far as the new requirements, I'm not sure about that- check with the Health Science office. Good luck!
  15. Your clinical instructor sounds like a fabulous person! :) Don't give up.
  16. Have you had a clinical yet? If so, try asking one of the nurses on your floor- good luck- I'm a student too!
  17. I bought white New Balances at Kohl's and I've used them through my past 2 clinicals and I'm on to my third- they are great- very comfy and my feet don't hurt after being on them the whole shift. I've heard Dansko's are a must-have, but they are really expensive, so I'll treat myself after graduation-- but for now, my 40 dollar New Balances are super comfy. Good luck with clinicals!!
  18. Congratulations!! :) I'm happy for you.
  19. 22 when I graduated with my BA in Psych. 26 when I started nursing school, and God willing, 29 when I graduate :)
  20. You're not alone- maybe you can give counseling a try- there's no shame in asking for help- after all our whole profession is based on it! :) Good luck- you can do it!
  21. She's in my prayers...please keep us posted.
  22. I am totally with you on giving glory to God, and I believe it was your faith in Him that gave you the ability to study, and with his guidance, your studying paid off! :) CONGRATULATIONS!!!
  23. I had finals week this week- I feel your pain- just finished Med Surg I- Peds/OB is next-- we get almost 2 weeks off but we have pre-reading of course!!
  24. I'm in an 18 month intensive ADN program and we have 10 wk quarters- we got one whole class on physical assessment with a lab portion- we got one system per week and then used that week's lab to practice- our final was a check off on a complete head to toe with no cheat sheet- we all made it and you will too! It does seem pretty fast though- good luck :) You'll get through it!
