Hi. I am a UK trained nurse and I have a new job in Melbourne, currently awaiting my visa. Can anyone recommed a Australian Nursing Practice book and a medication book. Any good online bookstores anyone can reccommend? Trying to do a bit of studying. Thanks

The government has set targets in which an ambulance has to be at the scene within 8 mins. Recently a report was issued showing reasons why ambulances were called. This included a cut finger, not able to get a taxi after a night out and a scratch from a cat.......

In the UK if you work for the NHS it is broken down into health authorities called "trusts" which cover different areas. If living in Lanarkshire the trust is NHS Lanarkshire. The biggest hospital being Hairmyers.

Hi guys, sorry I havent introduced myself yet. How rude! (Just found this wee sticky post.) Im Pamela and live in sunny Glasgow, and hoping to immigrate to America. Long wait I know, but fully committed. Live with hubby and 2 kids. And currently working in medical admissions. Which I love. In the UK we often work to this ratio. Its not a bad thing, its not dangerous, its the norm. I can work to this ratio no bother at all. I am a good nurse and a safe nurse. I will still get all my work done and have a chance to talk and have a laugh with my patients. Not all will be independant with different levels of care required. Some will be very unwell. I still work well to a high standard of care within hospital policies. You imply that foreign nurses working to this ration are dangerous, but this is not the case at all.

Hi yoginurse, good post and expresses how a lot of us have felt for a long time. As you know, Im a UK trained nurse and proud to be. I am a very good nurse if I dont say so myself. LOL And where ever I work I will always give 100% and be an asset to any hospital. I too have felt the negativity towards foreign nurses. A big cyber hug to you. Keep your chin up doll. I dont necessary think its harder to find a job as a new grad in my trust. It depends on where you are looking to work, and you need to be realistic with your experience. Do you know where you will be living to narrow down your search?

A bank staff nurse is like per diem. You work when it suits you. You might find you have to be in full time employment for 6 months before you can bank. I have a friend who has worked in a prison setting and she loved it. Her work involved giving meds and sitting in with Doctors. She was never in a wing and was escorted by a guard most of the time. Giving out meds she had 2 guards by her side. Its not for everyone, good luck.

Agreed, my husband has started a few successful businesses in his time, (not nursing related) and has the freedom in his worklife. And recommends it. For me I think Im too nervous, but my hubby would be behind it 100%. Great thread, keep it going. It is important to show nurses that there is an alternative.

Ive just had a transcript prepared by my UNI and I found dealing with them very frustrating. I mean Im sure Im not the only ex-student who has requested a transcript. And they still did not do it properly!! Have a lot of patience, immigration to any country is very complicated. Good luck

Agree 100%. The press, patients, relatives are to quick to pick up on the negatives and not enough is said about the good. No praise, no thanks and no appreciation. Yet we still continue to work our butts off.

Hi, Im sorry to hear of you struggle. Fitting in can be hard and when you start somewhere new as a student or Staff Nurse, it takes time to feel you belong. It takes time to adapt to a new routine, and new people. Why not try reading a book on confidence building, or effective communication. Have belief in youself, you are a valuable member of staff whatever your role. Hang in there, and believe in yourself.
