The thing that killed me during my clinical rotations was being on the GI-postop floor. Two words: Fresh Colostomy!!!! I couldn't breathe, I couldn't see straight, and I went home and told my husband and pets not to fart or poop around me for at least two weeks. I appreciated C-diff diarrhea guy after this!

You guys will! It's not easy, but I will tell you that it can be done! I have a full-time job (midnights), a home, and a hubby! Things get done, although it can take a little longer for me to do things, but it's doable. I am in my last year and graduate in December. It has not been a walk in the park by any means, but the main advice I can give is to not beat yourself up about the little things that may get neglected, involve your family in understanding what you're trying ti accomplish and tell them that you'll need their help, and all will be ok!

I have been working 8p-4a, 5 days a week, throughout nursuing school. I am now in my second year and will be done in December. It is very hard with all the driving and lack of sleep, but I get it done. I feel that I will sleep when I get on summer break and when I get days off from work! But in the meantime, I'm making it work. Like some idiot said, anything worth having is worth working for! I know that it will pay off in the end. I still clean my house, do laundry, and find time to hang out w/the hubby. Again, it's very hard, but I am determined to be able to quit my current job and move into a career that makes me happy! Hope it helps! Some days Ive gone straight from school to work, and had to do the pick-up something to eat, take clothes with me in the morning (to school) to change for work, but like I said, I know in the end it will be worth it!

Thank you so much for writing this. I am still a student and I already worry about what is going to happen to me/with me in my first year. I'm sorry that you are having such a hard time and I pray that things get better. One of the main ways that you can help yourself is by seeking out a therapist. Many won't talk about it, but I see one regularly. She helps me to see things in a more healthy and realistic way. I work full-time and go to school full-time, and my night job was making me feel so angry and depressed. However, I am better able to cope with my streeses, and my husband no longer thinks that I'm going to choke anyone or go "postal"! Lol! There were times that I cried and wished that there was a way to end it all, but thank God that I wasn't able to do anything. I still struggle everyday, but I feel totally hopeful and in charge of my emotions, and feel confident that I will persevere, as I feel you will too. As others have said, I am not sure about bedside nursing, however I do want to try it for a year to get my feet wet, so to speak. But it is not for everyone. Please find a job that you like, and keep your head up-there are way other things for you to do with your degree! Hugs and kisses! :redpinkhe

I was thinking that it was going to be a waste of time and money, but I am so glad that others have answered your thread! Now, I am definately going to join! And as far as Ham, I believe you can do both. I'm in nursing school and was told that it (PTK) wouldn't interfere.

Currently, I work in a casino. I deal blackjack from 8p-4a. Although it allows me to have my day free to study and go to school, I am full-time, and always sleepy/cranky! I decided that I'm going to either sleep when I'm dead or whenever I finish school: whichever comes first! Good luck!

First: stop seeing yourself as an "A" student, or even that you are getting a C or F in this class! Take a deep breath! Ok! You are amazing and I commend you on deciding to go to school and working hard to get where you wanr to go for yourself and your children! Now, I agree: coloring books and silly rhymes or phrases to help, and if you can, visit the library or an open lab at your college so that you can touch and feel the muscles! Have the kids(if they're old enough) help mom with her flash cards: given them some and have then ask mommy what muscles are around the eye or what helps me chew, etc.. You can do it! My crazy self was working full-time, married, and decided to take AandP1 AND Microbiology together! I thought I was gonna lose all my hair, my hubby, and my job! But I pulled it out and hustled hard and passed both w/ a B-. I was an A student and failed my first tests in both classes! I just knew I couldn't get into nursing school or anywhere else and I was gonna be stuck in this dead-end job. Well, I made it and am in my 2nd year of nursing school! YOU CAN DO IT! BELIEVE IT!

Basically, we just talked to the clients that wanted to talk to us, as well as observe their day and eventually put on a group presentation for them. They are very nice and as long as you look at them as people like you do your medical clients (meaning: not a diagnosis or illness), then you will be just fine. Personally, it was my most enjoyable rotation so far, and it has me wanting to become a psych nurse when I am ready to retire.

My piece of advice is also my new years' resolution: stop listening as soon as you realize that someone stupid is talking!!! I hear the same types of things because it's taking me so long to finish, but it's cool. These same idiots will be the same ones that will need you later.

I agree with a lot of what the other posters said. If you want to become a nurse, I definately think that you should talk to counselors at different schools to find out what you will need to retake or what is required for entry into their programs before undertaking the time and expense of retaking classes or becoming a cna. Personally, I think it is pointless to become a cna. I think you should focus on boosting your grades and getting into nursing school if that is your ultimate goal.

Please don't give up! Your dreams are only over if you let them be that way. There are other nursing schools, other ways to become a nurse. As hard as you've worked and with all of the obstacles you've overcome, this should not be the end of your dream. Please go talk to your teacher and/or the dean and if they won't give you the one point remember this: God opens door that no man can close; and my personal favorite: when a door closes, God opens a window! Keep your head up, and don't give up!!!

I wouldn't date anyone I was in school with for the simple fact of distractions, unless he just wants a "study/distraction buddy", but that is just me. Anyways, I am married, and it is hard enough to find time for my husband, who I love and am obligated to. Everyone else in my life waits, and if this guy isn't willing to be put on the back-burner (like, if your study habits don't match up, or if your clinicals are on different schedules) then he needs to step back and leave you alone. My priorities: school, husband, work, everyone else. Husband knows his place, does this guy?

I also do not believe that you should have to convince those that are alert and oriented x 3 that you have to bathe them. If someone says no, then that is their choice, as we should focus on patient autonomy, yes? Anyways, in my clinicals, there have been those instructors that believe that things should be their way or it's wrong. It's best not to argue, just do what you can the best you can and don't worry about the rest. I'm sure you are doing just fine! -love: a newly second-year student...

Well, I am in nursing school during the day and work full-time at night in a casino. I deal blackjack, which the casino taught me how to do. The pay is good, but it is hard trying to get enough sleep. I figured that I will just sleep after I get done with school and get my RN license! Also, I have a husband and a household to maintain, but no kids. If someone is able to help with the kids, it may work out for you! Good luck!

I play video games a lot when I am feeling burnt out or needing a quick break from studying. I love gears of war 2 for relieving stress! And you should not feel bad about doing something you like (WoW) in order to preserve your sanity to pursue something you love (Nursing)!

Don't give up: I failed med/surg the first time around. I tried to study everything and no matter what I did, it seemed to not be the right thing. I needed to miss 8 or less on my final to pass, and I missed 10. I was so disappointed and mad because I DON'T FAIL! Or so I thought prior to that. Well, instead of going on to OB with my classmates, I retook md/surg and got a B. What I did different: different teacher, less reading, more concentration on MAIN parts. When I read the book the first time, everything seemed relevant. So I studied everyday, read every line, and highlighted nearly everything. Luckily I saw a tutor and she said that was the problem. Everything is not important, and other than that you have to figure out what your teacher specifically asks for in regards to her questions. Each teacher seems to be slightly different in test writing. My first med/surg teacher prided herself on asking "tricky" questions, and when asked to explain the "right" answer, we would get "because it is" or a similar response. Please don't give up! I am here to say that you CAN do it, because I did it too! Good luck, and don't let one class deter you from your dreams! If I fail again, I get put out of my school, but if that happens, I will be applying somewhere else! I am determined to become a nurse, and will do what it takes for as long as it takes to make it. Luckily for all of us, she said that she was trying to "find herself", and with her statements I don't believe that we will be seeing her near the bedside anytime soon in a healthcare role! Don't let those who don't share your views discourage or phase you one bit. I do not want to deal with children in the healthcare setting for other reasons, but will not let that stop me from doing the best I can in ob, peds, or anywhere else I may end up. Often we don't get to pick our patients, so all we can do is our best, swallow our thoughts (fears, etc) and do the best job we can.
