  1. Hey, she's the one in attack mode, so yes I think she has issues. I doesn't matter what state you are in, LPNs do not assess, that is the pervue of the RN... LPNs do collect data and report to the RN, and yes they can chart the data, but what she was saying is that she charted an "assessment" which is not allowed. She should do an entry, such as "Rash noted on upper extremities, RN notified." But to chart as assessment, and then go over the RNs head to the ADON, well... her job and her license won't be long to this world. NOT trying to pick on anyone, just giving an opinion from an EXPERIENCED nurse...
  2. I say that you are out of your scope of practice simply because you are. Then you chart the fact to prove it. Not trying to push your buttons, you asked for opinions, and I gave one. Attitudes like yours are what eventually costs licenses... do as you want, in the end it's your license to lose. The other thing you should think about is "everyone is treating me like I'm stupid"... so, everyone else is wrong, and only you are right? You must have a lot of issues...
  3. Well, you were right, but even when you are right you are wrong, because it's the RN's job to assess the patient, not yours. You are licensed, but charting assessments is out of your scope of practice. You need to read your Nurses practice act for your state, which will tell you what is, or is not, in your scope of practice. Assessing patients takes an RN, so if you are charting assessments, you are beyond your scope of practice, and are actually practicing as an RN without a license, and can be legally culpable for it. You can gather data and report it to the RN, but anything more could get you in deep trouble if the RN pushes the issue.
  4. We were taught to suction the mouth first, then the nose, because many people will gasp and inhale when you suction their nose... this causes them to aspirate the secretions from their mouth. It is especially true with infants and children...

  6. Congratulations, Nurse Brandi!!!!
  7. i hope that some day we can get an update on his situation. whether he gets his act together or not is entirely up to him. i hope that everything turns out well for him and his family. i also hope that he realizes someday that you saved his life! take care, dave
  8. Sure they don't.... they go to the U.S. to be treated, as anyone who works in healthcare along the northern border states can attest...
  9. Either way they are dead... Lets spend 3 trillion a year and get the same old results... Great Plan!!! Sign me up... not!!!
  10. That's why we have ER's and walk in clinics... NP's in grocery stores... all of this to improve patient care. No need to go socialist, where after they are rapidly seen by their primary care provider, they die waiting to see a specialist...
  11. You may need to try a community college, perhaps one where you can get on the waiting list. Get some kind of experience while you're waiting, it will help you in the long run. Work on your writing skills if they require an essay. Broken sentences with poor structure, like some in your post, will hurt your chances for admission.
  12. Go to your boss and reiterate your needs. If he doesn't respond, go to his boss, and his boss if needed. Keep going until you achieve your goal. The city has a Mayor, right? See him if you have to...
  13. if... you can't hold your bladder for a twelve hour shift...
  14. What you did was very honorable... you put your friend, his family, and his health first, and worried about how you felt later. He may not thank you now, but I'll bet that he will in the future. You are a good friend, stop beating yourself up over things that were not your fault!
  15. Usually, you will be given assignments such as reading and research papers to do. Then you will take tests to show comprehension. You may also participate in discussion boards and on line collaborative projects with other students. Contact with instructors is normally handled via email. It's a great way to learn if you can work independently, but you need to be disciplined and keep yourself on track... Hope it helps, Dave
  16. Well, on a job app or resume, they have the date that you graduated high school... doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out your approx age from there, anyway...
  17. LOL... Always, always, always keep an extra set of scrubs and an extra pair of shoes and socks in your locker! Now you know... :lol_hitti
  18. While your friend is in the academic mood, why not schedule the GED test? It would help her in many areas of her life... :grad:
  19. Yea!!! :shbdy: :WHCk: :grad:
  20. Just a guess, but I would assume it's because the PA will be supervised by the physician regardless of experience, so new grads are okay, but the NP must function independantly and has prescriptive authority, so they want experience...
  21. Barbara, if nursing is your calling, then please don't let anyone or anything stand in your way. It is awful when you have to go to a job you hate. There may be times when getting to your goals is difficult, there will be bumps in the road along the way. Nursing school is a challange, to say the least. But if being a nurse will make you happy, then please do it. Once we are dead, there are no "do overs"... so go for it! Dave
  22. Working in a CCU, we check the strips every shift, sooner if we anticipate a problem. Watch your strips carefully when using ANY IV anti-arrhythmic, amiodarone or such... you can catch the QT getting wider and wider, head off trouble before it starts... Hope that helps...
  23. According to the drug guide, the half life is 5 weeks, so if you are not pregnant now, and do not get pregnant within 5 or 10 weeks, there should be no significant level of the drug in your system. Was the capsule leaking? Seems to be a pretty small risk if it wasn't...
  24. it is illegal to impersonate a nurse. each states law is different, but my state (wisconsin) says: "except as provided for in s. n 3.05(4)©, wis. admin. code, no person may practice or attempt to practice professional nursing, nor use the title, letters or anything else to indicate that he or she is a registered or professional nurse unless the person holds a current registered nurse license granted by the board of nursing" get your throat checked out before it gets worse... .
  25. I've seen where vitamins/minerals present in stool in a solid form (granular) when intestinal absorbtion is altered or inadequate such as in dumping syndrome...
