I had to respond when I read this. I also moved across the country for my first RN job in May of 2010, to a hospital in the middle of nowhere with horrible morale. There was very high turnover, we were always understaffed, everyone was negative, I was terrified every night that I worked, and I was precepting newer nurses as soon as I was off of my 3 month orientation... all I can say is hang in there. Try to stay away from the negativity and do your job. Find the people that you know you can learn from and stick with them. In my case, I just kept applying and applying back home until I got a job. I ended up only having to spend 8 months there, but it was a rough 8 months! Once you have your experience you can get out of that toxic environment and move on. Good luck, and try to stay positive. It will make you a stronger nurse in the end :-)

PVT worked for me! I tested on the 23rd, checked as soon as I got home and got the good pop-up. Today I found out that I passed!

I'm in CA, and graduated in April with my BSN. I started applying all over the country back in January....applied at over 75 hospitals. Last week I was offered a job in TX, and I start in June! It can be done, it just takes a lot of time and effort. Good luck to all of you!

I applied to most of them and haven't heard anything. I never even got a confirmation when I sent my letters and transcripts that my file was complete or anything. They seem overwhelmed with all of the applications! Hopefully we'll hear soon! Good luck to you both.

We had to take the predictor a few weeks ago, and it was much easier than I had anticipated. It is similar to the practice tests. If you have been taking ATI exams throughout nursing school, you'll do great. They prepare you well for the predictor. Good luck!

Hey Srobinson! Have you been contacted for an interview yet? I just finished my online application and will be sending my supplemental application in on Monday. Do you have any idea how competitive the program is or how many people the accept? I think that I am also going to apply for the critical care residency once the positions are posted. My first two choices were Peds and Adult Critical Care. I'm sure that they are the most competitive, but I figured that if I'm moving all the way across the country it should be for something that I really want! From reading this forum, it looks like the interviewed people for areas that weren't their top choice in the past. We'll see! Good luck to all of you! Hi everyone. Congrats to all of you who are about to start next week! Is anyone here applying for the July, 2010 Residency? I'm just waiting on one more reference before I can send my packet in. I have no idea where I'll stand compared to the competition, but I figured it's worth a shot for such a good program!

I called and spoke with a recruiter today regarding the critical care/trauma internship, and the first thing she asked was if I was going to have a BSN. I will so I didn't inquire further, but it almost sounded like a BSN might be necessary. I would call and speak to someone. She told me that she would mail the application information to me tomorrow.

Does anyone know of a responsive nurse recruiter for the navy in the San Diego area? No problem, I had a lot of questions too. The campus is the new one off of Aero Drive. I'm assuming that is where you will also be for your open house if you haven't seen it yet. There will be a representative from Ace uniforms there with scrubs, shoes, stethoscopes, etc. Definitely order the scrubs from them, but you probably want to shop around for the stethoscope and shoes. I was kinda annoyed becuase I was super excited and they talked me into getting a stethoscope there, but I ended up ordering a better one online for a better price. I was happy with the shoes that I purchased from them. They are sketchers work shoes (the shoes have to be all white). Some people prefer the Dansko (I think that is how you spell it) clog shoes and I've heard that they are really comfortable. As far as a PDA goes, I don't think that it is necessary at all. No one I know really uses one. I'm sure it would be handy to look up drugs and things, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one. There are so many expenses being in nursing school and that is one that you can live without in my opinion. Studying... it all depends on how well you learn and are able to comprehend the material. For first semester I always took one full day off. On the other days I would take breaks, but maybe spent a total of 5 hours on school a day outside of skills labs and clinicals. I was very happy with my grades, but know if I had put in a few more hours I could have had all A's. I think it is different for everyone though, so be prepared for a period of trial and error at the beginning. For insurance, I went with Aetna. I just went to ehealthinsurance.com and compared plans. I know a lot of people who went through blue cross or blue shield, which are a little bit more affordable. Again, I think it will depend on if you just need basic coverage or if you need something a little bit more comprehensive. There are tons of plans out there though! I think I answered all of your questions! Let me know if there are any more.

Labs are on campus in the skills lab. Your first semester you will be in lab twice a week- once for clinical skills lab and once for health assessment. Clinicals can be at Sharp memorial, grossmont, chula vista, or coronado. I think that the only time you won't be in a Sharp facility would be for the peds rotation in 3rd semester. You probably won't get your clinical assignments and locations until close to the first week of school so be prepared for that. It can be frustrating not knowing exactly what your schedule will be, but they try to get it out as soon as they can. You'll get the rest of your schedule as far as testing and labs during orientation. We also found out who was in our clinical group at orientation, just not the dates and times. Hope that helps! Congrats to all of you who have been accepted! You will find out everything you need to know about immunizations and CPR at open house. If you want to get a head start, there are some previous posts with all of the information about them. I would recommend checking your files for immunization records so you have an idea of where you are at. Since I was able to get records for everything from my old doctor, I only ended up having to get the two TB tests and a TD booster. Another option you will have if you can't get copies of the records and you know you have received the vaccines is a titer to show immunity. Like I said, they will give you all of that info at open house. Good luck!!

From what I have been told, some schools are part of a "clearinghouse" that automatically submits your information to lenders. The same thing happened to me during my pre-reqs, but then when I started nursing school I was told that I had to fill out the deferment form because my school doesn't participate in this "clearinghouse." Hope that helps!!

I looked on the OUHSC college of nursing curriculum list and you're right, on there it says that your cohort would only be taking three over the summer but ours would be four. The OUnursing.com one says something completely different. Oh well.... What is enrichment day all about?? Is there as much for community second semester as first semester??

For those of you further along in the program... when do you think we will get our summer schedules? Is it true that some of you didn't even have your spring schedules until the day before classes began?

Which class did you hear that we won't be taking? I was under the impression that we had pharm, clinical, acute and chronic, and family focus. I guess it wouldn't surprise me if they changed something though....

Hi everyone, I had been told by my school that the CA NCLEX cannot be taken before your degree is posted. It is a problem for us because we finish two months before our graduation date and would then have to wait to get our date from there. Someone told me that as soon as the final course grades are posted, you can take the NCLEX. Then I heard from another person that it isn't a good idea because it wouldn't show my BSN. Isn't there a way to update the BSN status once the degree is posted? Can anyone help me understand this better, Thanks!

Hey everyone, For all of you further along in the program, I was wondering for the exams that are proctored do we find out our grade when we submit them like the quizzes, or are they posted at a later date? Just curious! Thanks!

I never got that with my stuff.. I guess I'll have to call them.
