Tattoos are fine. What bothers me is the nurse with poor bedside manner who also gossips and brings morale down. Tattoos don't change the way my unit runs or the patient outcomes. I am much more worried about the nurse with a bad attitude.

I am sorry that you feel "tired of babysitting." Have you taken the time to educate your nurses that report to you? I am recently new (less than 3 years) experienced in nurse management and I have found that if I am clear and upfront with my expectations and clarify myself when I need to I have minimal problems. With that being said, if everyone did their job most of the time and knew everything that we know we wouldn't need someone to manage, would we?

If the pt is asking for it routinely my facility usually asks the MD to make it routine.

I've heard 2 arguments. One is that O2 is for the onlooker's comfort and not for the patient's comfort. I have also heard that O2 provides improved comfort for air hunger. I have worked with physicians from both backgrounds. Morphine can alleviate air hunger too and some patients may become restless or uncomfortable with the face-mask or nasal cannula. So really, as long as the patient appears comfortable, and the family is satisfied then I am as well.

According to your story I probably would not have suspended you, but instead filled out a med error paper and in-serviced you. The only thing I can think of is that because the family caught your potential error and complained you were suspended. You would not believe the errors that I see on a weekly basis as a supervisor. Most nurses are in-serviced on the error. As long as the error did not cause injury then I take the error as a learning opportunity. If I suspended every nurse that made an error I would have no nurses working right now.

Ask yourself: Am I able to manage several nurses and CNAs for the entire facility by myself including conflict resolution and be impartial? Am I comfortable teaching other nurses? Will I be able to make judgement calls without someone else to confer with? Am I willing to take responsibility for the entire facility and all my staff's actions? If you can honestly affirm every question, then you should have no problem with the position.

I loved reading that and I wish that we could take some time out of our busy days to be that patient and caring.

I have been a CNA, LPN, & RN In LTC. I have seen so many well intentioned nurses come and go because the management goes on and on about providing quality care and not taking short cuts and then give us 20 to 30 patients, expect us to go to 2 meals in the dining room, do all major treatments, chart Everything in nurses notes, MAR, TAR, clipboard, and some on the computer, not to mention meds, assessments, MDS mini assessments, creams on bottom. And if you forget 1 little thing they will write you up& complain behind your back about how you don't care.

The Medical Assistant at my Dr's office also referred to herself as the nurse. Her nametag clearly stated MA. I don't appreciate someone who hasn't gone through the years of arduous work and studying, and the NCLEX calling themselves nurse. Another issue with the Dr's office I go to: I was late for an appointment one time and the "nurse" hassled me, and the Dr hassled me too. I told them both that for the amount of time I am not seen at the exact moment of my appointment I can be a few minutes late. I also told the doctor if she wants to hassle her staff about punctuality then do so, but I am not staff I am a patient and if I'm too late to be seen then make me reschedule and charge me the cancellation fee, but don't walk in to the exam room looking at your watch all annoyed and sigh loudly and ask me why I'm so late. That isn't very good for the patient dr relationship and trust.

I haven't had any issues yet. It takes a little while to become accredited. The administrators are working very hard to get the final approval through. Several of us are moving on to get Bachelors degrees and we haven't had any issues yet.

I just graduated from Career Training Solutions RN program. I also attended CTS for LPN. I will tell you this: The Instructors are very knowledgable and professional. The amount of clinical sites that you will get a chance to work in is better than any around. Yes, it is expensive, but they do financing, student loans and grants. They will also not change their requirements several times while you are on a waiting list to get in like Germanna Community College did to me. BTW, there isn't really a waiting list. Also, the programs are tough, like any nursing school, however the instructors will work with you if you show an effort and willingness to learn. And, their NCLEX pass rate is one of the best in the area. And, they include an NCLEX review at the end of the program, most Nursing Schools make you do that on your own. So yeah it's expensive, but the results are proven.

Yay!! I passed!

Took the NCLEX-PN today. I had a 3.7 GPA in school and scored 85% on ATI (which = 99% chance of passing NCLEX) in school. I'm not bragging, actually those facts didn't even come into play when I sat down to take that menacing test. I had no confidence today. I'm totally unsure if I passed or not. I haven't had 5 minutes to study since I graduated school Feb 9. However, I started working as a nurse at the nursing home where I have been a CNA for 3 years. My husband tells me that the month of working as a nurse was study enough. I didn't believe him until I took that test this morning and I know I answered at least 5 questions right because of issues I was dealing with at work in the past week. Three other girls from my class have already taken the test and passed! i should find out tomorrow after 9AM. My supervisor told me that if you're sure that you passed the test when you're finished, then you probably didn't. If you think you failed, then you probably did pass. I hope she's right. Any other words of wisdom as I go through one more sleepless night?
