  1. Congrats Allie!!! I've been in public health for 12 years and I have never regretted it. I found my niche and mostly importantly I am there for my family!! I know we could have used the money, but time at home was important for our kids! I hope whatever feels right to you, works out for you!
  2. Hi Jenny! I stopped by here every few days and see if there is anything new. Usually, there isn't too much going on! Good Luck on the acceptance letter!! I remember the stress well even tho it's been 22 years!! Take care!
  3. Better Luck next year, I guess it just wasn't meant to be this year!!!
  4. Way to go Peyton!!! What a class act!! He knew he still had a job to do and win the ballgame after setting a new record. I just wish they would play like that all during the game!
  5. My husband is a farmer!! He raises beef cattle and grains like corn, soybeans, and wheat!
  6. Thanks, but No Thanks!! :rotfl: I remember the Blizzard of '78!! We were off 19 days of school, I was a Jr. at the time. I worked part-time in dietary at the local hospital, so I worked extra hours when no one could come in. There was nothing else to do. We lived in town at that time, now I live in the country and really don't want to live thru another blizzard like that one! :chuckle
  7. How many of you are snowed in? Did anyone have to go to work today and how were you getting there? I'm lucky, I'm off until Monday and so no plans to get out at all. We have about 20 inches of snow and drifting. I hope everyone has a safe holiday!!
  8. We had our clinics last week and it went fairly well!! We gave about 500 flu shots in those two days. We also did pneumonia shots too, but I haven't had a chance to count them yet. This week, we left our afternoons free to give vaccines and gave about 180, so we have about 120 left. Our health officer will decided if we need to send it where it is needed. I keep hearing that nursing homes are going without. I'm ready to get rid of every blessed dose as soon as possible!!
  9. In the past, the two of us have worked together. One does the shots, and the other fills syringes and does the paperwork. We switch off and trade every once in a while. It seems to work well and goes quickly. We have a clerk who does the Medicare stuff! We may have to change as we see how things go!
  10. You have just described my nightmare!!! We have 800 doses and have clinics set for this Thursday and Friday! There are only 2 nurses to give the injections. Our health officer will be there and usually hands out permission forms and answers questions. We plan to use him to screen pts as they come in using the CDC quidelines for the shortage. The radio and newspaper is also publishing the same quidelines! We were joking about having law enforcement just in case! We may just have to call them!! I am soooo dreading this week!!
  11. Yesterday was an up and down day!! First our second shipment did not come in. Then we talked to our rep and he had no ideal what was going to happen to our order. He did say CDC was started to dictate where the vaccine was going! Later we called the distributer and found out our order was on hold indefinitely!!! By the end of the day, Aventis called and said the rest of our order would be shipped and we should get it today!!!!! Man, talk about a rollercoaster day!! Now the fun begins!
  12. Is anyone else ready to shoot the media over the vaccine shortage???? Our phone at the office hasn't stopped ringing! We ordered from Aventis, so we should get the rest of our order as planned. We are trying to plan a clinic next week, if we get more of our order today! This is really getting nuts anymore. Here I thought we would be set and no problems. I wish everyone else Good Luck!!
  13. First time, I did a follow-up on a case (I think it was E-Coli), the Dr's office wasn't too sure if they could give me the info. This was after HIPPA was started. All I did was mention that it was a Communicable Disease and had to be reported to the Health Dept, they suddenly became very cooperative! I guess I'm lucky, I live in a small town and it's pretty easy to find people! I can't imagine trying to find people in big cities!
  14. I work at a health dept and do mantouxs all the time. I think it was two years ago, I had mine done and totally forgot to have it read! The other nurse I work with forgot too! There are only two of us in our office. I felt like an idiot! How many times did I grumble because someone forgot to come in and have theirs read???!!! I don't grumble as much as I use to! Hey, we are all human, right?
  15. Mine is pretty much what I do, PHN92-Public Health Nurse and I started in 1992! Very boring! I wanted DixieChick, but it was taken. My real name is Dixie! I wasn't clever enough to think of something else!
  16. I have a friend who transcribes from home and loves it! You do need to tell family and friends that you are working and leave you alone! Some people think if you are home, then you are not working, but you are! It worked well with her family! Good Luck!
  17. Well, I work in Public Health, so my salary is probably lower than most! I make about $32,000 a year. I also would be interested in seeing what the rest of Indiana makes! My job does have some perks, such as no weekends or odd hours. I am salaried so if I do have any overtime, it's taken as comp time. Anyone else?

Good luck and I hope it works out for you! I did my prereqs at IU East in Richmond, so I don't have any info on the one in Kokomo. I was an LPN who went to Ivy Tech in Richmond for my ADN. This was the program that worked best for me. Again, Good Luck!
  19. I know in our state, varicella will be required for Kindergarden and 1st grade starting 2004-2005 school year. I wouldn't want to go to work, esp in a school because of the chance of secondary infections. My husband's grandmother had shingles when she was about 98 years old. She is almost 102 and still has pain from them! I feel sorry for anyone who gets them!
  20. I just heard about this today! It's so sad and I really feel for the parents!
  21. I was beginning to think I was the only Colt's fan here!!! Anyone else a fan?? Don't be shy! I'm going to a friend's house tomorrow to watch the game! I really hoping the Colts win tomorrow! :chuckle GO COLTS!
  22. Some of you have mentioned people struggling with death and having that terrified look on their faces. I had an experience many years ago that I will never forget. I was working in LTC on nights. My great uncle was a resident in this nursing home and was dying when I was working. I knew his history, he was not a pleasant man when he was younger. As he got older, he wasn't much better. He was very difficult to take care of and most of his family had very little to do with him. I remember how he struggled against death for a long time. I finally told him it was ok to "go on"! It was painful to watch him pass away. I don't think he even realized I was there. He had such a look of horror on his face. Several years later, the movie "Ghost" came out and when the demons came for the bad guys, it reminded him of my uncle! I often wondered if he saw the demons coming for him. I hope not! I do think that nursing is one profession that makes people a little more sensitive to the supernatural. We all deal in death at one point in our careers and in our personal lives.
  23. Anyone else going to watch the game tomorrow? I think it will be good game and a tough one to win!! GO COLTS!!!!! :)
  24. I have been truely educated by all of you!! I never laughed so hard after reading this stuff! I always knew there were some werid people out there and now I know! :roll
