There is no nursing shortage!
Some friends that I graduated with in July went to a nursing job fair yesterday. No one would even take their resumes once they heard "new graduate"

pregnancy question
I worked waiting table while I was pregnant with twins until the doctor told me I had to stop (pre-eclampsia). They both turned out perfect. Your body will tell you when too much is too much. Do you have short term disability insurance? That would cover a doctor ordered medical leave before your baby is born

and the waiting begins....
Ug. I hate the waiting. I had an interview 2 weeks ago. I got an e-mail last week that said they are still doing interviews and I should hear more by the end of this week. I am hoping that means I'm still in the running and they sent out some e-mails to other people that interviewed saying "Thanks for interest, but you have not been selected for this job" I have never wanted time to move faster!!

L&D-Maternity 1950's Style
My FIL always thinks the progression of his children's births were funny. In 1971 they had their oldest and he was shown to the waiting room. In 1975 they had their second and he was asked if he wanted to come in the room and he declined. In 1979 when my husband was born they treated him like the biggest jerk for not joining his wife in the delivery room.

Could employers judge people by their names?
I think it is stupid to judge people based on names. I had a very memorable maiden name. Alot of times people thought I was joking when I told them. Even though it could be embarrassing, I had a hard time giving it up when I got married (yes, I know I didn't have to, but I like that tradition). I don't think it ever kept me from getting a job, or my unmarried sister. Now, my other sister is married to a hispanic man and has a very hispanic last name. If someone were to look at her resume and they were racist, they may throw her resume out. But she is not in the least hispanic. We are "European mutts" a little bit of this, a little bit of that.

Seriously...more supply than demand?
I would take anything I could get my hands on right now. I have applied at outpatient services and home care and they all say "This is not the appropriate avenue for a new grad. Try applying at hospitals and gaining some experience"

Nclex Aug. 20 have questions
I just took (and passed!) my NCLEX last week. I took Kaplan and learned that nursing assistants do standard/unchanging procedures (glucose checks, routine vitals, baths-- don't know about foleys) and LPN/LVNs take care of stable patients with predictable outcomes. Someone who is about to be discharged requires teaching which must be done by an RN.

What do you wish you were told on the first day?
I will also add that while they were telling us these things (the graduating class officers came to speak to us) I was thinking something along the lines of "What a bunch of drama queens! Can't handle a little school.... Wimps!!" I had no idea!!!! PS- Now I am done in 3 days!!!

What do you wish you were told on the first day?
I honestly don't think anything could have prepared me for nursing school. They said alot of these things to us at orientation, but there is no way to know what you are in for. PS- I am done in 4 days!!!!!!!! I cannot believe it!!

Anybody here NOT do care plans?
Ug. We have careplans week to week and for the last 2 classes a mega care plan as well, worth a test grade. Not fun. Especially when we are inthe middle of trying to study for critical care tests

I don't know what to do with myself.
I am bored... but I should be studying for my endocrine test tomorrow. I don't have much time off between this class and my summer class. I take my test tomorrow and then we are off Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and jump into our very last class on Monday. If it weren't the last class, I would probably not be as excited!! 54 days until I am a

What do you wear to class?
I usually look like I rolled outta bed. Mostly because I did. Heehee. On test days I wear my "lucky test shirt" So far it has brought me great luck!!!

Are grades in your school shared?
Our class is similar. We are down to 18 people and we are close. I am glad not to be in a competitive class. We all support each other and celebrate good grades together and cry over bad grades together.
-
Are grades in your school shared?
We get our grades online and for most classes we see our grade and "class statistics" which includes highest grade, lowest grade, and distribution of how many grades between 60-70, 70-80, 80-90, and 90-100

How long in bed for post C/S mothers?
I have had two c-secs. My oldest (2004) I was in bed probably close to 24 hours. I had no medical training then. They asked me if I was ready to get up, I said "No" they didn't press the issue. Terrible recovery! When I had my twins (2008) I was in a wheel chair to the NICU 7 hours later and up to the bathroom (with assist) 2 hours after that. Much better recovery. Of course, I was ambulating alot more after the twins. I was back and forth to the NICU many times each day and I was on the other side of the unit. I actually did my OB rotation at the hospital I had the twins at. It was cool to see it "from the other side"

Things you would love to say to your fellow nursing students!
I don't know if there is a specific "definition" to it, but when I hear the term "Telling them off" I assume there will be alot of cursing and insulting. Not a respectful interaction. I don't think you meant it in this way though. I have been unbelievably blessed to have a class where everyone supports everyone else. If I fail a test (I have failed one) I don't think anyone is judging me, and if another student fails a test, I will cry with them and tell them the next one will go better. I can honestly say I like everyone in my class and would hang out with them on a one on one basis. We go out after every 8 week class to have a few drinks and celebrate getting through another one. Classmates that have had to leave for personal reasons or those who have had to repeat a class come out too. I have talked to people in other classes that are behind or ahead of us in the program and they say they have never done that. The class directly ahead of us is appearantly very competitive. I like how ours is :)
