Has your hospital changed visitors policy r/t the flu?
Yep...no one under 18 and only 2 at a time. Not that the 2 at a time thing has been strictly enforced

Anyone else feeling the effects of the recession at work?
I work on a surgical/ortho floor and I can see it. We have a lot of patient that have elective surgeries such as knee and hip replacements ect... Our census has been pretty low this year. We've all had to do a lot of floating to other floors...it sucks!

Dry Hands..Just starting clinicals?
I love, love, love the goldbond ultimate healing with aloe. It's awesome stuff. It keeps your hands soft even after washing and it's not at all greasy. They have coupons you can print out on their website. The curel intensive lotion is good stuff too. You don't need much of either of them so the bottle lasts a long time. It makes up for their slightly high cost

Never seen anything quite like it (the things visitors do...)
A pt's family members had all brought food in for themselves and the pt...not so unusual right?! Well the grandson had been rolling all over the floor playing (semi private room btw) for the first part of the shift Which grosses me out enough, but....once the food was brought the boy proceeds to spread out his hamburger wrapper on the floor and eat from it French fries, ketchup and all. I had first started working there so I was too shy to say anything about it, now I would suggest otherwise lol

Automatic Blood Pressure Machines (portable)????
We have like 8-10 dynamaps. But I do work the surgical floor in a hospital....lots of post-op and blood vitals.

Nursing School Blues...
A lot of people I work with do work and go to school full time. I will be joining their ranks this fall. It's not for the weak of heart lol Where I work, we do have 12 hour shifts though (better to get your time in and have more days off). Some work places will pay fully or help pay for schooling, there is always financial aid and loans as well. Where there is a will there is a way. Good luck :)

What you'd REALLY like to say....
Seriously....you broke your ankle, not your arm! I really think you can lift your straw to your mouth :icon_roll While you're just standing there talking and laughing next to that call light, I'm trying to pass out your paperwork....I guess I have to answer call lights too, thanks for nothing. Quit following around the nurses and watching them do various procedures and questioning them and then asking me for help because you're behind You are not at your clinicals. Really....you need your urinal with 10cc in it emptied (cause you're afraid you're going to spill it on yourself ) right now?

Funny things you have said but wish you didn't
I was getting a pt back from pacu and asked for her arm so I could take post op vitals......she looked up at me "I don't have an arm". And of course her family was in there and the nurse I was working with as well lol

What is your Nurse to Patient Ratio
I'm a CNA, but the nurses on eve/nights I work with have no more than 6. Plus CNA's and unit secretary (nights only one for the whole hospital). It's a Surg/Ortho floor.

I am a nurse. Venting about how I feel.
Wow.....that brought tears to my eyes :yelclap:

What are the duties of a CNA in a hospital setting?
I work on a surgical/orthopedic floor from 7pm-7am. My duties include vital signs, emptying of various drains, checking blood sugars, putting pts who have total knee replacements in their CPM machines, helping pts walk, use the restroom ect... providing lots of encouragement. We also put some paper work in charts. Like New said people are still able to do a lot for themselves. It's amazing how some people think that just because they had surgery, they no longer are able to hold a straw up to their mouth We actually do have our fair share of pts with dementia....they fall and break a hip, or shoulder ect... On occasion I also have to "float" to other floors....and I can say I really like the dynamics on my floor. It's amazing how quickly the ortho pts are in and out of the hospital. If you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer them

CNA Bloopers!
A couple weeks ago I was passing out ice water and spilled it on a patient! Luckily I reacted fast enough and got mostly myself and the floor:lol2: I felt so bad. I just told her she looked to comfortable

I just ordered a bunch of stuff from UniformAdvantage.com. I like their selection. They not only have their own brand, but tons of others as well. Will let you know once I get my order :)
