3rd day on my own...need some time-saving tips
Do yourself a favor force yourself to chart as you go, delegate what you can. I leave stuff that can wait for the next shift at 530 sharp- next shift starts at 7pm. Its more important to see patients one last time- clean, clean room of hazards, ascertain pain needs ect. ect. the oncoming nurse will love you for that -it gives her time to get started because patients are content for the sheift change. Also, smile. Your helping people.

What was your job before you became a nurse?
cabinet maker- my girlfriend was a nurse and she was doing her taxes. I saw her income for the year and called my local college about rn school She made twices as much as me that year working two- three days a week. The best part was that she kept all her stuff from RN school on her computer. Lucky me.

Help, My peer is using same med cups all week!
I suspect the NOC RN uses the same med cups over and over. I have never seen this practice done before. We do a med pass of about 60-70 patients and this RN even stacks the cups up when he/she is done and hides them somewhere in our med room. At first I thought he kept them to help him do an audit or something. But then, on a shift I had late charting to do I noticed this nurse grab them put them on the med cart- and start going through out computerized MARs. (I am still notsure where they are hiding) He had one sitting on the MAR page and I said- Are those old cups-you cant reuse them, they are dirty! This RN took the entire cart to another room. All bent like I am some type of clean freak- Am I going nuts here or is stashing stuff away in a med room/ reusing med cups a bit weird? PS- I will print your comments and leave them in his box- BUG

Please help me with this because I think it is a bit hinky
Anytime you feel uncomfortable doing a certain task- report it and seek a solution to your supervisor in writing and keep a copy. Feel free to not touch the central line until you talk to a supervisor, you are not trained nor qualified to do so. Bug

basic training programs required for corrections?
Check with where you want to work- Special Functions Training was alot less where I work- the run (1.5 miles in 10:22) knocked out all the smokers. But with consistant training and hard work it was cake and you get in shape in the process. The main thing is that rarely do you get a chance to earn a 20 year retirement anywhere, which is quite common in corrections. Corrections is less work than med surg- look at me, I am typing this from work. (heehee) Bug

10 wks into program PT dies....
Promoting peaceful death is one of the most important and meaningful things we can do as nurses. Tally, when you get a chance ... read notes on nursing by Florance Nightengale. For me it is a compass to my next intervention at work , often the words of Nurse Nightengale sooth and focus me. I was in the right place the right time to teach a ten year old girl how to give herself insulin shots when I was a student years ago, somewhere between shooting saline into oranges to that 22 second hug her mother gave me on my last day of clinicals in peds, I found my place in the world. Help! Please
Thread, Your going on to get your RN right? Your best bet is to find a great mentoring program at Mesilla Valley. They will ease you into a survey program allowing you to train in med surg and about 4 specialty areas- you would never guess what your favorite area of the Hospital is- E.R. P.I.C.U Cardiac Care, Ortho, Check them all out and good luck. Thank your husband for serving his country for us all. God Bless..... VFely rn (Bug)
