Fresenius Dialysis Advice on taking the job
Do you want to do dialysis? Have you tried to get on at the hospital? It is hard now for lots of people to get a job but that doesn't mean you should just take it either.... I just turned down an opportunity with DaVita yesterday making 14,000 more than I currently make at the hospital. I just graduated in December and I decided that I wanted a year of experience under my belt since I was not sold on doing dialysis... I hear it's a love or hate specialty and I didn't want to give up my current job for something I wasn't "planning" on getting into. My longer range goal was actually a bit of a different direction so I wasn't going to chase down the dollar and take this job. BUT if dialysis is what you are sure you want to do and a company is offering you training and an opportunity, I would take it.

Any new grads having a hard time finding a job??
cocochanel, I graduated in Dec too, I work for OS hospital and I think we may be hiring a new grad and an exp nurse. My boss told me that over 75 applicants applied to a recent posting. Alot of getting an interview seems to be about "who u know"... Which sucks, you just gotta network, heck even showing up and talk to the nurse recruiter face to face helps

Any new grads having a hard time finding a job??
"Well.. I hope Mississippi.. since that is what board we are on. " I navigated to this page while I was searching, but since you are so quippy, I know of an opening for a new grad on day shift at the hospital I work for in Mississippi on the Gulf Coast, since that is what state I live in and was the reason I was asking.

What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?
When I worked at the VA, we had a patient come into the ER because he said that he went to lunch and ordered a club sandwich. He said that when he got it, that it had toothpicks holding it closed. He said that he thought there were 3 total, but when he got done eating his meal, he only saw 2. He wanted an xray to see if he ate one!!! NO signs or symptoms of distress, no evidence he ate it, and doesn't really know if there were 3 to start with.

Past job ruining chance of new job
A few things, Number 1- employers are only allowed to say if you are eligible for rehire or not. Legally they cannot disclose particular info in your file. Number 2- you can use references from nursing instructors as references. Most job applications ask "may we contact your employer" you can mark no. I have done it before and had no problems. Have u thought about getting another job as an LPN right now? This way, your last employer will be a positive experience.

Tips for new grad starting Davita dialysis houston
I read a post a month ago that someone wrote that said they decided not to go wit DaVita because they had a bad feeling inside the clinic. So, later that day they said they drove past the clinic and saw an ambulance there. I said to myself briefly "if there is an ambulance there when I get there I am leaving" today I pull up for my first day and guess what! AMBULANCE.. So I get out of the car, go inside. I waited in the lobby about 20 minutes. The whole time I am listening to patients bad mouth the place and so on. I am getting ansy.. I still couldn't shake that gut feeling I have had ever since I accepted the positon 4 weeks ago. I looked through the treatment window and heard the loudest voice "this is not the place for you" What r u waiting for, and why are you here on your day off. ( worked 5 -12 hour shiftsout of the past 7 days).. I am not secure in my own knowledge as a nurse with only 4 months of experience to venture out yet. So- I got up, left and called my recruiter to tell her I decline the job at this time. THAT is what my GUT told me to do. I feel so bad but I feel good at the same time....

So, how do you know to or not to do these type of things? Do they train you and teach all about that in the "classroom" component?

Should I stay or should I go??
Thank you so much for your reply. I am still processing everything in my brain! I want to go for it, I really do, but I have read so many posts from UNHAPPY x-DaVita employees being worked to death and in fear of loseing their license. I have also read where RN's are in a struggle with PCT's overstepping their boundaries, well in the hospital you have the opposite sometimes with CNA"s hiding out, taking many breaks, half ass doing things. On my floor they don't even do blood sugar's! So, in some ways it would be nice to have well trained, certified PCT's.

I have heard that some clinics the techs push heparin. does yours? Also, I have heard that reuse kidneys have been mixed up. that scares me. I hope my clinic is not going to be like that!

What is your Nurse to Patient Ratio
We have a 4 : 1 rato that we try to stick to. Occaisionally we end up with 5 if we are short a nurse. But as you know that you may have HAD 6 throught the shift if you had 2 discharges then got 2 admits. (aaahhh day shift)
