2 jobs.. one full time, one per diem. Need Advice
I am a RN, and work 2 jobs, one is full time (at a pediatric hospital, I work 7/10 hour shifts a pay period, plus have to be on-call every 6 weeks on the weekend), the other job is a per diem job (at a psych hospital, I am supposed to work 2 12hour shifts a month, but its been hard lately b/c I have been putting in lots of time at my full time job). I really want to resign from the per diem job, just because I don't enjoy working there, I am not learning anything new, I don't always feel safe there (patient population, and staffing is not that great). I can always pick up more on-call shifts on the weekends if I need more $$, plus I am planning on taking a certified pediatric nurse exam in the fall, since I have at this same hospital for 3 years, I am trying to get specialized.. The only issue is that my husband does not want me to resign from the per diem job. He says that it will look good on my resume, and that I hardly ever work there (they have been pushing me to do more, and I have been able to do a couple half shifts, but now they are telling me that I can't do that, that I have to work the full 12 hours). I just am trying to find away for him to see my viewpoint. I think all he is seeing is $$ and Resume building.. I mean, I have 6 years of prior psych hospital experience before I became a nurse and if I ever want to go back into psych, I know I could. I just really want to focus on peds now, especially since I am going to take a certification exam.. I hope this isn't too confusing.. just trying to get my thoughts out and try and find some advice.. :) Thanks for reading.. Also, as far as resigning, any tips on how to write a good resignation letter, that would allow for a possible to return to the psych hospital or the general hospital that affilated with it?? Any help/advice would be great.. Thanks all!!

Second Degree Programs
I am not sure if you would like to move, but I know GVSU (in Grand Rapids/Allendale) has a second degree program. Last I knew they have two, one that was "regular" and one that is accelerated. I did the regular 2nd degree one and it was pretty nice. I know with the accelerated one, they discourage working during the program and last I knew the students got a stipend. this was back in like the summer of 2006, so things might have changed a bit. Hope that helped, and good luck to you.. :)

Moving To Fresno Area
You might want to check out Community Behavioral Health Center. They are one of the only inpatient psych facilities in Fresno. I am an RN and have been per diem there for a short time. PM if you want to for more info.. Hope that helps..

Nurse Phobias?
I am not a fan of eyeballs either.. I have always been "weirded" out by contacts and even using Visine.. Seeing a couple eye lid surgeries in Nursing school just confirmed my phobia of them.. :) glad to know that I am not the only one! :) I am also a bit scared of suctioning pts, esp trachs.. Not sure if its just that I have not done it a lot, and its just the unknown that I have a fear of or what..

new advice about finding a new job..
I am a RN with one year experience in peds (med/surg). I do not like my job, at all.. I am anxious all the time and this anxiety has started to transform into depression. Its starting to effect my home life and I hate the way I feel.. I also have a per diem job working as an RN at a psych facility, that is what I did before I went into peds.. I enjoy it there, and feel less anxious, but they have no full time or part time offerings... one more thing to add to the plate, my husband and I are on my health insurance, and I feel like I can't leave my job b/c we will lose coverage.. I am losing it.. I can't take my job anymore. I don't know what to do.. I am in a new city and state and I just am lost.. I am so scared to try and find another job, that I might not like, and still be stuck in the same situation.. I really just don't know what to do.. I don't know anyone really where I live that can give me advice. I feel like a failure b/c I don't like my job and just want to quit.. If anyone can help, at all that would be great.. I live in Fresno, Ca.. Thanks :)

want to quit.. but I am not sure who I talk to..
This probably sounds really funny.. but I am thinking of quiting at the current place that I work, but I am not sure how to go about it. Here is a little background info.. I recieved money for relocating, but if I left before 2 years was up, I would have to repay, which I understand and I can do. I recieved this through the recruiting/Human Resources department. Would I need to inform them, before I inform anyone else? I work night shift, and we have 3 permanent charge nurses. I also have a nurse manager, that I have never actually meet. Would I need to inform all the charges and the nurse manager? I know I would need to put it in writing, but I am not really sure what I want to say (I have never quit a RN job before). ALthough I really like the people I work with. I just feel that I put in a year at this hospital, but I am still not feeling comfortable in what I am doing. I used to work in psych, and really miss that, and I think that I might be better at that. I just don't feel like I fit in at the current place and am always dreading having to go into work. I don't want people to get mad at me, but I really think that I need to go somewhere that I feel comfortable and happy. I want to leave after the new year, like in March or so.. THis is very hard for me.. I feel like I will be looked at as a quiter.. Thanks for reading and any advice!

Mental Health Worker / Psych tech
I worked at a inpatient psych hospital for 6 years in Michigan as a Mental Health Worker (MHW). Most of the people that held this position had a college degree or were in the process of getting one. Some people that had worked there for a long time, we just "grandfathered" in and were not required to have a college degree. Depending on the unit (Child and Adolescent, Adult, or Older Adult), the MHW's duties were 15 minute checks, teaching classes(like coping skills, etc), activities (esp at evening times when they didn't have an AT there), helping during meal times, charting on the patients (like what they did for the shift, etc), getting paperwork ready for the next shift/day, with the older adults, you would have to help them get ready for bed/take them to the rest room, etc. And for sure talking with the patients and things like that..

Looking at Grand Rapids area for possible relocation???????
how exciting! I am very jealous that you are moving ot GR.. That is where I am from and my SO and I have relocated to California about a year ago. The one thing with living in Rockford is that the drive back to the "city" can be a hard in the winter, and you have to allow for time to get to and from. It is a very nice town, with good, but competitive schools. they have many colleges around the Grand Rapids area. From community colleges, to Universities, to small private colleges. Grand Rapids is a great city.. I miss it terribly.. Good luck to you and your family.. :)

Are you relocating after you graduate??
I relocated to California from Michigan with my fiance (now husband). For me, it was the hardest thing I ever did and would never want to do it again. I miss Michigan more that anything. I am not sure if it was the move, the fact I was in a new field (nursing and peds), I had a "scary" preceptor at my new job, I was planning my wedding or what, but I was honestly miserable the first 6 months. I cried and cried, and thought about moving back home everyday. I would really research where you want to go. We left michigan b/c my fiance found a job in california. Not that I don't like california, its beautiful here, but I do miss my family and friends back home. I hope one day I can feel comfortable, and confident. BUt it is hard.. Just do your research.. See if you can visit some hospitals, maybe one might fly you out to the state for an interview.. hope that helps and good luck to you.. :)

places RN's can work that are not hospitals?
I am fairly new to the central valley (Fresno), and I am wondering if their are any places that a new (I will be a RN for a year in November) RN can work that is not a hospital. I am having an extremely hard time enjoying my job. I am getting to the point where I want to quit and work at a grocery store.. Any advice would be great.. thanks..

hate my job..
To make a long story short, I relocated to california from michigan in November. I got a job at what I thought would be a good fit for me, at a peds hospital, a Magnet facility at that, and now I am rethinking it all. I worked in psych as a mental health worker (like a CNA, sort of), for 6 years, and thought I wanted something different. Well I have realized that I hate my job now and I desperately want to go back to psych. A couple problems, I got relocation money, and have to stay for 2 years, or pay it back, my fiance feels that I need to give them at least a year, but its so hard, I dread going to work, all the time. I don't want to be a quiter, but I just feel miserable all the time. I am anxious all the time, and now I am getting really depressed, to the point of not wanting to do anything fun, I just want to sleep and be sad.. I just don't know what to do. I want to quit and get another job, but I feel horrible. I don't want my fiance to get mad at me, but I just am anxious all the time. I know its my life any my health, but I do feel bad for leaving my job so soon, and having it reflect badly on me if I go look for another job. Sorry for the rambling, i just wanted to get my thoughts out there... thanks for reading.. :)

NCLEX & hurst review?
many of the girls in my nursing class took the hurst review. I think it was over 20, and all but one passed the NCLEX the first time. We had the 4 day seminar at our school. I really liked it, they broke things down for you.

How many new nurses are seriously thinking about quiting?
I do, almost everyday.. I am not sure if I want to quit nursing over all, just the hospital I am at. I work in Peds, came from Psych and boy do I miss my psych patients.. The main reason I can't quit is b/c I got relocation money and I have to say for 2 years, if I don't want to pay any of the $$ back.. I think though, once I hit my year, if I am not comfortable and am still missing my psych patients, I am going to quit.. I will only have to pay back half the $$..

Anxiety Prob/3 months into job
I too have these thoughts and feelings.. I graduated in August, and then moved to California from Michigan with my fiance. I know like 2 people here and they are relatives of my fiance.. I have been at my current job in california since december and everyday I want to go back to michigan. I miss all the comforts. Hence the reason I am not sleeping now, and am on here, I am nervous for my night shift tommorrow night, well actually tonight.. My anxiety is driving me nuts. I am hoping this will pass, and one day I will be a confident nurse.. :) Thanks for reading..

fresno/clovis hospital info
I have been in Fresno since November 2006. I moved from Michigan to here b/c my fiance got a job here. I basically took my NCLEX in michigan, then came here. I got a job at Children's Hospital Central California (they were the first to offer it to me when I came to visit in september of 2006). I like it there, to a certain extent, but I am missing what I used to do, and that was working in psych. Can anyone tell what Community Behavioral Hospital is like? What about pay, patients, staff? I have to stay at children's for a least a year, but I am really missing psych and think I would like to go back.. Also any info for a new grad/nurse about californias "nursing" rules etc would be great. Any other infomation would be great.. Thanks you all so much.. Lakerette01 :)

BEST NYCLEX Prep courses
I am not sure if you are looking for a class, but My nursing class and I all took the Hurst Review course (4 days of in class ), but I also think they have online stuff too, and all but one of the girls in my class that took it passed the NCLEX-RN on the first try. I also know that many of us bought a few different books (I like Saunders) and did a boat load of practice questions.. hope that helps..

Did anyone lose weight AFTER becoming a nurse?
I did lose some weight, but I call it my "anxiety" diet. I have began to workout again, and that helps with both the anxiety and stress as well as keeping the weight off.

Did you work when going to nursing school?
yes, I worked, every Saturday and Sunday, as a Mental Health Worker at a psych hospital. Normally I would do 8 hours a day, but sometimes when my lovely co-workers would call in sick, I would pull doubles.. I got my BSN, and was normally in class or clinical all week long, as well as preparation out of class time. It was hard, and at times I thought I wasn't going to make it, but I did. Thank goodness my boyfriend (now fiance) was supportive.. And not to toot my own horn, but during the year and half that I did this, I did not call in sick once, even when I was dealing with my "nursing school migraines" as I so like to call them... Hope that helps and keep on pushing forward.. :)

If you won the lottery, would you still do your job?
If I even played, and I won, I think I would work part time or per diem.. I donate some of the money to charities and to my alma mater. I also think I would end up going back to school to get my MSN..
-
What field of Nursing will you work in??? & best/worst place to work?
I really like psych, and think I will go back to psych. I am in peds now, and I like some of it, but not all. I am fairly new though. My ultimate goal would to be a NP in psych..

Stupid things your school does/did
We did not have to strip down, but when we did physical assessment, like the heart and lung stuff, we were told to wear shorts and tanktops. For our testouts, we did used our classmates, you could pick them too. Not too bad, but we did have a lame theory class during our first semester.. SO many bad role playing things..

Why did you take up nursing? What's your story?
I got my first degree in Psychology and ended working at a psych hospital as a mental health worker/patient care provider/mental health tech, whatever you want to call it. I really enjoyed what I did, but wanted more. I really enjoy people, especially the ones in psych :). My fiance(boyfriend at the time) told me I should look into nursing. I was a little scared, I knew many girls in college that went that route and all their classes seemed way to tough for me. I talked with some of the nurses I worked with and did some research. I finally applied, all over mind you, and started to take the pre-reqs. I finally got in, and then finally graduated (August 06)! Now I am in the new nurse phase. I am in a new area, peds, and I am sort of missing psych. I am a nervous wreck most days just b/c i don't want to make a mistake. I know that I am going to be the slowest nurse on the planet.. :) I am hoping my comfort level increases as I begin on my own (2 weeks). I hope you enjoyed reading.. :)
