Would you let a relationship affect your job advancement?
OP, forgive me if I am making incorrect assumptions, but based on your description, this relationship sounds very unfulfilling. Does the man refer to you as his girlfriend, or is the relationship not exclusive? At first, I found it hard to relate to how you think you are running out of time to find a husband. I am 33, single, and in no rush! I usually prefer my solitude to the company of others. I would be happy to have a life partner as long as I am in love with them and my life would be better with him than without him. Having said that, I remember being 26 and having the man I thought I would marry break up with me. He did me a favor, but at the time, I thought my life would never be good. My advice is: give yourself time, learn who you are and what makes you happy, and make sure you really know and can respect the person you decide to be with. Also, if they don't show you that they love and respect you, it isn't worth it.

Guess what I did today?!
Ugh! I've had to check up to 5 classes in one day what with siblings and switching classes (and they wanted me to do 3 more classes).

Seasonal allergy saga........
I recently put this on another thread, but I have two seond-graders whose eyes are very irritated now. After a few interventions and some rest time, I said, "Try to go to class, I cant keep you here all day." Child: "Its springtime, this is your life now!!!!" "Until June, you have to deal with this!"

Patients Say the Darnedest Things
I'm a school nurse, and this week has been rough on the kiddos with allergies. Two second-graders have been spending the better part of the school day with me for a few days. Me: "You look much better, you have to try to go to class. I can't just keep you guys here all day everyday." Little boy: "It's springtime, this is your life now!!!" As I burst out laughing, he adds, "Until June, you have to deal with this!"

Patients Say the Darnedest Things
Older lady who had received a certain medication earlier in her stay with positive results. Wants same medication, but it is now contraindicated for this patient, for reasons I can't remember. Patient: "Ya'll are giving me everything but the kitchen sink!!! BUT I WANT THE KITCHEN SINK!!!!!" "It's like it was Halloween, I got my candy, and now you're telling me Halloween's over!"

Math requirement for RNs?
I've always been the same. I struggled with math in elementary/high school, despite doing very well in every other subject. As I got older, I improved a lot. But I still have trouble using the formulas given to get the answer. I figure out my own way to do it, and get the right answer.

My laugh for the day
A second-grade boy came running into my office looking very distressed, breathing heavily, calling out, "Nuurrsseeee!!!" Even though this child is starting to become a FF, the sense of urgency about him made me think this might be a legitimate complaint. Me: "What is it, what's wrong?' Student: "WHEN I WRITE WITH MY PENCIL IT MAKES A NOISE AND IT MAKES MY BACK ITCH!!!!" I admit, I burst out laughing. He couldn't understand why. I was relieved later on to learn that that was not what the teacher thought he was coming to me for.

P.S. I LOVE this forum!

Manners....are they obsolete ?
Hi all, I'm new to school nursing this year and have been lurking forever. I started working in an elementary school this year in what you would call a semi-urban area, just miles outside of NYC. I was actually surprised at the manners these kids have! Most are very polite, they say "Thank you, have a good day!" when leaving! There are a few rude ones, don't get me wrong. But all in all, I've been pleasantly surprised. :)

Help choosing-Home Health or Dialysis?
Hi all! I am an RN with 7 years' experience in a hospital, and now I am looking for a new job. I have two offers that I'm having trouble deciding between. One is in homecare with Visiting Nurse Service in New York, where I live, Monday to Friday. The other is in Dialysis (Fresenius) 3 days a week, 5AM to 7:30PM or later. I usually prefer a 3 day a week schedule, but those hours are intimidating. If anyone has worked in either or both settings and can give some info on the workload and environment, I'd appreciate it!

Are shy and quiet people not allowed to be nurses?
Please don't listen to her! I was so shy in my teens and college years that I would be sick before going into a social situation, never talked to anybody at school...practically stopped breathing and speaking during a school presentation. And I'm still shy and quiet, but guess what? When I have a situation in which I need to speak up for my patient, I forget all about being shy!! It might not be easy the first time you do it, but it becomes more natural with every shift. And I love talking to my patients-you sound like you are a good listener who will pay attention to your patients' needs.

"If they really cared about their mom, they wouldn't of put her in a nursing home"
btw, jacksoncare, Just how are your SISTERS paying in the upper 5-digits for home health care??? Why on earth are these WOMEN out working? Shouldn't they be in their places at home?

"If they really cared about their mom, they wouldn't of put her in a nursing home"
"Jacksoncare," Why are you a member of this forum? You are not a nurse. Occasionally, we do receive insightful and helpful comments from non-nurse members. Unfortunately, none of your "contributions" have come close to being either of these things.

"I'm an uncertified medical assistant"
"My grandmother is an MD, my uncle is an RT, my sister is an OT, my mother-in-law teaches BSN and I am happily and proudly a Medical Assistant. I have turned down invitations to tack those two little letters behind my name and for those who don't know, MA's practice under their physician's licence and that alone is a pretty big responsibility. Know the facts before you speak." Out of curiosity, what two letters were you "invited" to tack behind your name-MD, RT, OT, RN?

"We want a nurse who speaks CLEAR English"
Good points, and I agree. I've often pointed out to people when I don't think a patient has understood an explanation and need someone/something else to aid in communication. In my other post, I think I was straying from the topic at hand, and also being a bit reactionary to a situation recently in which a patient didn't want to use our langauge bank phone to communicate with his doctor/nurse. He requested someone who spoke his language to come to the room...unfortunately on that particular shift there didn't happen to be someone who was fluent in it on duty. So, we tried to accomodate him with the phone, which I know can be a pain to use, but he became annoyed when we brought it in...

"We want a nurse who speaks CLEAR English"
In response to those who believe Americans are entitled for not being required to know a language other than English: Yes, I agree this is a valid point, and I would have appreciated learning another language early in my education. However, in America, we have people from so many different countries who speak so many different languages. I live/work in the NYC area, and many people do speak Spanish. But many nurses I work with come from Russia, Thailand, Korea, etc., and have already worked hard to learn English. I know it hasn't been easy for some of them, but they have done well. Why do they also have to learn Spanish? In a country where there are so many different cultures, having one language to unite us helps. ETA: I chose Spanish because I do have a lot of patients who speak Spanish, and this is often where an issue arises. However, similar issues have arisen with patients who spoke another language

Lots of young people on disability?
I know a couple of people with Bipolar Disorder who treat it with medication and are actually quite capable of holding down very good jobs...my roommate and friend being one of them. Is it possible that some (not all) of the people on disability for this or similar issues are abusing the system when they really could control their disorders? Side Note: Am just asking, I don't pretend to know what it is like to have this disorder.

Nurse-Patient Ratios on East Coast
I work in NYC, and at my hospital, on a med-surg floor you'd normally have 8 patients on day shift, sometimes 9, on a good day 6-same goes for our telemetry unit. ICU is usually 2-3 patients. My floor is a mix of vents and tele, and lately it's been great having 5 patients--usually 1 or 2 are vents and 3 tele/medical patients.

Hospira pump safety?
Well, at my hospital, we did have to check our pumps today due to Hospira reporting that some of them are "not alarming when air is in the tubing" as per our manager..didn't hear about any specific event, though. I work in Bronx, NY.

Johnson & Johnson commercials
I think what irritates me is the slogan, "Be a Nurse." It seems to insinuate that just anyone can be a nurse, without mentioning all the hard work that goes into it...all you have to do is "care."
