I need help! w-4 for dummies with Per diem job
your per diem will be another job. If you're single, you don't need to do any worksheet unless you want to itemize and claim a bunch of things in which case, a tax professional can look at your situation and assist you. Basically, the higher the number you put on there, the less money is withheld and the more you get. Now depending on how much you make overall at a different job, that could put you in a different tax bracket and cause you to owe during tax season if less is withheld from your per diem job. I hope this helps.

I need help! w-4 for dummies with Per diem job
I work for a large health system that has gotten rid of that. It's outsourced and there is no onsite anymore. It's a website, you have to email or call. I called earlier in the year last year and emailed. Guess when I got a response re; the issue, november and that is when they corrected it. They used to have HR when I started but now it's there, just outsourced.

Need Advise. Two job offers
Just don't stay in the hospital too long. We sacrifice our bodies lifting these patients and when you get hurt, it's not fun. The question is why the hospital if your goal is home health? Tele is busy but good experience. Is your goal to gain experience?

Tax season, What can I right off??
Do you invoice, have a dedicated area or room in your house you use regularly for this such as reconciling records, planning, etc? you can deduct office in home. As to mileage, the person above me is right, it's 53.5 so deduct your reimbursement. You can deduct your licenses, union dues, professional magazine subscriptions as well. Are you an employee or self employed? If an employee, these will go on form 2106 and be subject to the 2% limitation. If you're self employed, then it goes on schedule C. Forgot, you can deduct mileage or actual expenses. Did you keep mileage records or do you use your car solely for this? If you're doing actual expenses, then it's the percentage use that you deduct. It's best to do both and go with the highest. If you got a new car and you're told to deduct sec 179, know that if you do, you can't take mileage on that car in subsequent years. You can however revoke sec 179.

I actually got my license at about 2 weeks after mailing the transcript. I think they're pretty efficient compared to other states.

Patient ratios progressive care units
I work in a PCU in one teaching hospital and the ratio is 5-6, mostly 6. A lot of times, dayshift come in to 1:6 ratio. They've been trying to make it 5 at all times but it's not been working. It's so stressful, can't even take a break to eat or pee, just busy, busy, busy. The turnover is atrocious and I sucked it up for years. I started floating to the PCU at a large academic medical center and their ratio is 1:3max, phlebotomy comes around q2-3hrs to draw labs, much less stress and it's just wonderful. Obviously, I'm working less at my old job and I wonder why i'm still there each week I go there. Yes, my other job pays about $3 more than the regular staffers at my new place make but I've come to a point where I'd take less money if that eliminates the stress. The good part is I actually get time and half plus at the newer place since i'm float. As others have said, all PCUs are not created equal. I say find a place where you can learn without the stress of task-focused care.

Endorsement & Temporary Practice Permit in PA - timeframe?
It took 3 weeks to get the TPP last year. I didn't mail my transcript; just sent it in last week so i can't tell the time frame for the license.

Am I crazy or what to drive 90 miles each way for first nursing job
I couldn't find a job in the philly area when I graduated several years so I came to maryland. The advantage is that if you work in maryland, you can claim exemption from their state tax in which case they take out PA taxes instead. Commuting each day is awful though. I would look for a place to stay while you're here. I decided to move to philly this year while still working in MD till I found a job in philly. if you have any questions, let me know.

BIDMC RN interview tips 2012
The NM has 5 standard questions she absoolutely has to ask you and they're all situational. Otherwise, the rest are questions she thinks of and wants to know about you. The recruiter also has 2 questions she has to asks, in addition to a few petty ones. The rest are general info questions they want to know based on your resume. I think their inteview process is quite easy or at least easier than I'd expected. I know this thread is old but I'm posting for those who're wondering what it's like. It was hard for me to find this info when I came here looking. Good luck

pay scale for boston RN's?
Thanks, I have an idea of how much the pay rate is now.

New RN grad moving to Boston area
i think the pay might a be a bit more, especially for someone with 10years. i only have 4 years and i was offered about $34 base pay at a non-union hospital in boston. op, i also live in md and i'll tell you that your job prospects here in maryland are much better than ma considering the fact that you don't have a bsn. hospitals here hire adns, heck, you can be a manager at some of the hospitals here without a masters degree. in some cases you don't even need a completed bsn, just the fact that you're in a program getting it done. most hospitals ny and higher will only hire a bsn and even with that, the market is so saturated. years ago, i know few hospitals in a certain part of pa that were only taking bsns. get some experience here in maryland before moving up north. plus, boston is a very expensive. i can find cheaper housing in nyc and nyc pays more. yes, they're offering me a lot more than i make here in maryland but the cost of living there is quite high and i think maryland has a high cost of living compared to the part of pa where i came from (and pa pays higher, too). what i've learned is that once you've worked somewhere else, you get a higher pay raise when you switch jobs. i've only had a $1 pay raise in the last 4 years (68 cents of that was cost of living raise from 2 years ago). we arean't getting raises anymore. i know the new grads make more than i make so i ain't sitting here for much longer. don't forget, ma license is $275, it costs more than ny and pa license combined. but you renew every 2 years compared to a maryland license where you have to renew on a yearly basis. and you can find a job in maryland. my hospital hires new grads all the time. good luck.

pay scale for boston RN's?
I'm also curious abut this topic as I've an interview at BIDMC and need to figure out what the salary is on average. I work in MD and have a base of $26+ with $4 night diff and $4 weekend diff. My hospital stopped giving raises. The cost of living in MD is lower than boston. I've checked out apartments in boston and they seem expensive. I'm not sure how much parking costs? What is the pay for an RN years of experience? Is BIDMC a union hospital? I've heard union hospitals pay slightly more. Do hospitals offer differentials? if so are they flat rates or percentages? I'm trying to figure out what i can negotiate. Does boston have a city wage tax like philly or nyc does? how different is the pay for home health compared to working in a hospital? Thanks.

NYP self assessment
@ JR: I have no recollection of the test thing but i do know there wasn't a score at the end. I think hospitals are the only ones who can see your scores. Did i even log out? I'm not sure. What screen did i see at the end? the whole thing is a blur and it's only been a week since i took it. I just followed the instructions as to what to do which was clicking through the stuff on the right to get to each section. If you did that, you should be OK. About the phone interview, I didn't get an email afterwards. I'm not stressing out so much about this. I may have to do agency nursing instead or even pick a travel position.

New Grad from NJ applying to NY Hospitals
i think you must have a license to endorse because the form requires you to put down your license #. Plus you have to do the NURSYS verification unless your state doesn't use Nursys at which point you'll have to fill form 3 and submit to your board to verify your license. The courses are easy and only take a few hours to do. The child abuse one took me about an hour because it's so specific (I speed read) but the infection control was more commonsense nursing knowledge. Don't worry about the courses for now. Right now, I say focus on passing the nclex. There is no need to stress yourself out right now.

Will one year exp and BSN land me a job in NYC?
Nope, she also had her MSN and MPH but she was looking for regular RN position to get her feet wet and make contacts. Anyway, besides travelling, you may want to consider agencies, too. I have a friend at one hospital in NY and he said his ER just hired 2 new people. The thing is that they're hiring via the agencies. There are travel positions available in parts of NY.

New Grad Nurse in NY...advice on landing that first job!
That's quite interesting. I don't want to elaborate on why i'm saying this till later. You may want to look at your resume and cover letter. Also, I hope you're a BSN. If you are then, i say look at your resume. My schools had professionals who would work on your resume with you so start with your school, even if you've graduated most places will help. I externed at a hospital in philly and they also helped with resumes and cover letters so I say even if your school doesn't have that, try the hospital you work at.

New Grad from NJ applying to NY Hospitals
Why didn't you apply for an NY license initially since your goal is to work there? I graduated from college in PA and applied for MD license but I was actually hanging out with family in NJ when i took my boards. You don't have to apply for license in the state you live in when you graduated. Otherwise, I'd have applied for a PA license initially. I didn't apply for a NJ license when i graduated because I heard their board takes a long time. The problem here is that you're going to have to wait to get your NJ license and then apply for endorsement. NY does license by endorsement, MA does license by reciprocity. Reciprocity is a lot easier as than endorsement. Don't forget that if you didn't go to school in NY, you have to take those 2 courses when you apply for endorsement. You have about roughly 4-5months ahead of you assuming you just submitted your stuff. I heard NJ can take up to 3months to process. NY takes 8-10weeks for endorsement. You should get your license a few days after you take your boards. When I spoke to the hospital recruiter, they asked me when I submitted my application for endorsement. I think they want to know when you're available to start. Depending on when they need you to start, that may hurt your chances assuming they have someone who doesn't have to wait too long to get a license. I say be honest with them. if they really want you, they'll wait (assuming you stand out). Remember, there are so many grads out there. I'm not sure if you can cancel doing the nclex for NJ as your initial state and applying to NY instead. That'll cost you money. Currently, hospitals are looking to wait about 8weeks after July before you can start, assuming you take it end of July as you stated. I've seen a case here on AN where someone wrote it took about 6months from application to start working at a certain NYC hospital so you may be fine. good luck.

New Grad RN, BSN - NYP!!!
newgradJR Apply online. I suggest using IE instead of chrome for their application. It may have been the day I applied but the system kept resetting when i used chrome and had to switch to IE. I've logged in since with chrome to check the status as i got a few notifications from the recruitment team. Just work on your resume, write a good Cover letter and fill out the app accurately. I'm not sure if they take applications in person. Their turnaround time has been pretty quick so far. The first step is applying and taking that test. I've read post here where some nurses with experience took that battery test and failed and then there are new grads who took it and passed. It's more of a personality/behavioral assessment. Good luck.

Will one year exp and BSN land me a job in NYC?
I actually have an address in NYC but I used my address down here because I go there few times and wanted to be able to get mail ASAP should they send me anything. I spoke to an HR person at a hospital and they asked me when I plan on moving and how much notice I have to give. I gave them my fair answer. I think you should still look. While some positions may ask for 3yrs or more of experience, some do ask for just 1yr and even some just state a BSN without any experience preference indicated. The problem is most employers don't have jobs listed. Either way, keep looking. My roommate moved to NYC 2years ago and she had 5yrs experience in hopkins ER and still took her forever to find a job. Best wishes

NYP self assessment
Hello hopkins76 No i'm not a new grad. I do have a bachelors. I'm not that experience and i have no experience in the department i applied to and requested. If you look at NYPs website, it'll say they take new grads who have externship experience or other experience beside the regular clinicals required in school. If you have any questions, ask away and I'll be happy to help. Although I think we're in this together so i'm not sure i'll be of much help. What I've found helpful is doing a yahoo search for whatever you want and put allnurses at the end of the search question. there are so many threads on NYP here. The only problem is weeding through the ones from 05 vs those from last year. Hope this helps. All the best.
