  1. I work with students in this age group. I would also like to hear other opinions on this. I did have a foreign student referred to me for this issue. I was in no way willing to have him apply deodorant due to the fact that I know how deodorants can cause allergic reactions. I will admit he did have an "odor" but I just gave him a wet paper towel and had him wipe his armpits with it. I can not think of a good outcome to telling a parent that their child smells.
  2. I left my job as a LPN 3 years ago due to the increase of my seizures. I have spent the last 6 months looking for a job now that I have them under control. When asked why I have not worked in the last 2 1/2 years I told them I was dealing with an illness and took the time to get better but assured them I was better. When pushed further I confessed that I had epilepsy but that it would not get in the way of my job. They went from telling me they were desperate to hire people to not wanting to hire me. I have not had a successful interview since. All I am saying is good luck and I really hope everything works out for you.
  3. I am a LPN so teaching is not in the cards for me. I had to quit my job as an agency nurse 2 years ago. I was seizure free for a year and tried to return to nursing but whenever I was asked why I left my last job I thought I should be honest. I soon learned it would have been better if I said I was fired for killing someone. Epilepsy scares people and even in healthcare people react badly to it. My neurologist suggested I apply for disability and since then I have been receiving it. I keep looking for another job in nursing but no bites yet. Good luck in your search.
  4. I am a minority and I am going to tell you now that I am tired of the weak people, who represent my culture, crying about how unfair life is. I was educated in the Newark, NJ school system and did not allow my color to hold me back. People need to stop using their color as an excuse for failing. Suck it up and move on.
  5. When I was in school the smokers weren't even allowed to smoke when they were in uniform. It didn't bother me since I didn't smoke but we had a lot of unhappy people.
  6. I remember when I was in school a fellow nursing student felt the need to tell me that she was cheating off of another student. I told her that I didn't want to hear about it again. She told me again so I went to the instructor and let her know what was being told to me. I wasn't there to be popular and I warned her that it made me uncomfortable. She was kicked out of the program a few weeks later. This student should not be placing you in this situation.
  7. I LOVE running. I get out all of my frustration on the road. By the time I get home I am too tired to be stressed.
  8. I have never seen anything that broke my heart this much.
  9. I recently did an online CPR class and did not have to follow it up with an in person demonstration.
  10. A lot of people on this site ask questions about meds and their safety. I didn't didn't find anything absurd about her question.
  11. Since I can't figure out for the life of me where you are asking for medical advice I will bite. No, I have never worked for a weight-loss clinic and I do hope that someone on here does respond and help you but I do know that if a place gives you the creeps and makes you worry you probably shouldn't take the job. I hope someone on here can help you.
  12. I renewed via internet and they mailed me a paper license.
  13. The residents can call them whatever they want. I had one who called it his "banana hammock". Do any of you feel that I should call it that since that is what he calls it? No? Well then the whole thought that since the residents call them diapers we should is pathetic. I am pretty sure they can figure out briefs and depends. Give them a little credit and stop treating them like children.
  14. My son and his friends try to "friend" as many people on fb as possible. I know that these are not people they are really close to because when I ask he will tell me "oh, that's just a kid in my class". It reminds me of a lot of these idiots that I work with and their fb pages. They "friend" everyone on the floor. If you saw my fb you would think I was the stinky, fat kid. I have nobody from work because after I leave work I also want to leave you. If I want to talk to you I will call or see you in 12 hours.
  15. I would try to encourage this person because I think that is the right thing to do. I would encourage her right out the door. As a previous poster wrote you should be so wonderful as to bring in help wanted listings with RN positions neatly underlined and point them out to her. I think that would be the nice thing to do and Jesus will smile down on you for it.:)
  16. What do you mean by "choose not to use it"?
  17. I think the OP said that the patient stated she had papers for the dog. If she has papers, no matter what anyone feels, nothing can be done. I have epilepsy and have met a few people with service dogs that help them before, during, and after one. My husband suggested it but I have no interest in taking care of anything else. On the funny end of the spectrum I saw an ad for a seizure service dog that had epilepsy. Now that would make for some hysterical situations.
  18. I have tried so hard to stay out of this but I have to say that my husband has gotten so used to my laziness with shaving my legs that he considers it foreplay when I shave them.
  19. I would ask for a longer orientation. I have had ones that short but never in the beginning. Please speak up if you do not feel comfortable after the 3 nights. I think nights are a great shift for new grads.
  20. I worked at a camp last summer and the problem I saw was that the counselors were too young. They would use food as a punishment and if a camper did not behave they would withhold canteen (when they bought snacks) or snack time before bed (when or if the camp even offered it). I found out and brought it to the head person. It was addressed but only fixed for a short time. I also saw this with counselors from other countries.
  21. The OP made a poor choice and it is not a choice most of us would have made. I don't think this is a "new grad" issue but I think it is a "maturity issue". This was completely immature and it doesn't take someone with lots of nursing experience to know better. The BON most likely will not get involved in this but I do hope that the OP learns to learn more about what will be expected of her before she takes a job because she doesn't want to burn bridges in this economy.
  22. Okay, I am really bad at laundry (ask my husband and son) but if the colors do happen to get onto the whites can't you just bleach the whites?
  23. You might also want to find out what kinds of sports they are playing when this happens and who is really supervising. I witnessed a few special needs children being injured when I walked into a gym class run by aides playing dodge ball with them. The gym teacher was nowhere to be found.
  24. The point is, in your original post, you said you were a MA/LPN. You are a MA, right? You are not a LPN? So you shouldn't be suggesting that you are one unless that is true. It leads people to believe false things.
  25. I have pink pepper spray on a key chain but now that I saw the post about it spraying back in my face I am thinking about throwing it out. I am not sure i want to make my attack easier.
