  1. https://www.dshs.texas.gov/idcu/health/schools_childcare/resources/ I'm in Texas as well and we follow the texas department of state health services exclusion criteria and they state they need to be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication and define a fever being 100.0 or greater.
  2. I'm in Texas and had 20 years of hospital experience before schoool nursing and I started at year 0 on the teacher pay scale- kinda disappointing, but I'm so much happier at my job than I ever was at the hospital so I suck it up. My district pays the highest out of the surrounding school districts so I was happy about that, plus I'm now on my kids schedule too.
  3. Make sure you are able to use the spot screener on your students. In Texas they can only be used on students 5 and younger or SPED. My audiometer is ancient as well, but works great. It should be getting yearly calibrations so as long as it is passing those, it's working!
  4. 3 more with student and then 2 PD days then return on January 6th! Can't wait!
  5. This is only my 3rd year in school nursing, but this is what our policy states. I have not been asked so far to do this, but would follow our policy. Herbal medications, dietary supplements, or other substances not FDA approved will not be administered at school unless required by the student’s IEP or 504 Plan. It doesn't specify who has to administer it however.
  6. This is my 2nd year at my school and my 2nd year in school nursing- I spent the first 20 years working in a hospital mostly in the OR. I think I'm one of the lucky ones on here, but I feel very valued and appreciated at my school. I have supportive administration and teachers who value my opinion and what I do everyday. I get celebrated along with the teachers who I consider my coworkers even though I'm the only nurse here. My front office staff are the absolute best and help me throughout my day. They ordered a bench for my clinic with cubbie holes under it for storage since they are always borrowing my chairs in the clinic for the "naughty" students who get sent up to the office. They got me a gift card for a much needed mani and pedi. My office door is covered in notes and pictures from the students and the 5th/6th grade hallway teachers and staff have brought me a little gift everyday this week. I got the cutest poster from my PK classes that is the cutest thing ever! My nurse director got all the nurses a gift and ice cream yesterday at our meeting. This was more than I ever expected and more than my hospital ever did for the nurses during nurses week. I love school nursing, but I am totally counting down the last 16 days. I'll be ready to do it all over again next year! Happy School Nurse Day to you all!
  7. I use rice filled socks that I heat up in the microwave and allow them to be used for 5-10 minutes in the clinic and then it's back to class.
  8. 5 more hours left until spring break and then only 52 days until the end of the school year! I'm so ready!!
  9. I just had a 2nd grade teacher send down a kid so I could teach him how to blow his nose because she did not think he was doing it right... only 3 more days until break!
  10. What is the pink book? I had my first few arabic ones this year and many French Congo ones to try to figure out!
