Nurse:Patient Ratio on Med-Surg Floors?
At my hospital Pawtucket Memorial the most is 1:6 with an aid or if the census is low and no one will take AET (approved excused time) you can get a 3 patient assignment alone (no aid).( we are in Rhode Island)

Mandatory White Uniforms for RN's- your experience
We can wear anything we like as long as it is neat and clean and along the lines of a uniform. Some of the younger nurses wear non scrub tops that are a little on the fitted side but hey they can so why not.

straight cathe
Do you feel the cath turning back on itself right about the prostate area?? sometimes there is a narrowing and the cath cant pass so it doubles back on itseld, use a smaller cath if you have one. when you hold the member hold it straight up and keep trying to pass it past the prostate. is he incontinent ?? place a texas cath on him and collect a spec that way so as not to induce trauma and then he CANT pee at all) good luck ;-)

Learn To Say It Correctly!!
Ok sooo since there are a ton of pages to catch up on hopefully I,m not repeating this. I hate it when a pt. or family member says they have had a "blood clog"!!!! instead of a blood clot grrrr!!!

Well Olive Just what did you think nurseing was all about?? meds treatments charting??? I must admit you are probably a new nurse this seems to be the trend now adays. Gee why dont you summon your faithful cna to do your scut work after all this is your job as well!! Careing for the patient is a head to toe job these folks are from the old school I,m sure the patient your refering ot is at least 60 yrs old give or take a few years and yes this is what they think we do and YES it is what we do.

pinning ceremony participation
I wouldnt have missed it for the world!!! I gave up alot of my life to keep my good grades and I am very proud of myself and so was my family and friends. I have a new nurse that works with me she is a single mom and she took her daughter right up on stage with her because she felt Taylor gave up alot and missed alot of things inorder for her mom to get this pin. I think you may regret it (but maybe not) It is an honor that not many achieve, Nurseing is a hard program and I thinkyou have earned the PIN so be proud of yourself and show it!!! j

Floating to diffrent units in your hospital
Our union says that we HAVE to be offered AET before we are made to float AET is approved excused time meaning you can take the day off without pay rather than float and it doesnt count against your accrued time at the hosp. Most nurses take this and the nurse fromthe previous shift will get mandated if no one can be found.

Floating to diffrent units in your hospital
I am a float LPN and I love my job!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont have to get involved in the units "politics" + I dont get mandated either, I have been an LPN for 30 years and I have finally found employment heaven hahahah ( I have been at the same hospital for all this time so I know it like the back of my hand, and they know me as well) I started floating a few years ago when I needed to go full time due to a son in college otherwise I was on a Telemetry foor which I still call home when I float there.

diabetes oral antigyperglycemic agents, please help
Usually the p o hypoglycemics are long actiong and the pill you give today is really for tomorrow if ya know what I mean. I usually give all necessary po meds if the surgery is scheduled for atleast a few hours away. I hold diruetics unless the pt has a foley and alwasy give the cardiac meds if the pt has been on them regulary. I will hold colace or non essential meds if that is all that they have ordered.
