Hi Everyone. I need your help in regards to an opinion poll for my public speaking class. It would help me out alot if you could take a minute to cast your vote. Even better, let me know your opinion. It is on whether or not there should be a national uniform for nurses. So those on the east coast will be the same as those on the west. I have to list pros & cons.

No. I can't even begin to tell you how offended I would be that someone thinks they need to tell me what to wear. My mother stopped doing that when I was about 8.

I also don't see this happening for other healthcare workers like docs, RTs, OTs, etc. it's always only nurses. I accept the need for basic standards like clean, ironed, etc. but I would not work somewhere that had a specific uniform for nurses to wear unless they pay for it and launder it.

The way I see it, the pro would be for the company that made all the money selling a mandatory uniform, which would certainly be overpriced. The cons would be....everything else.

I live in Texas and I don't think either that we should be told what to wear. I like being able to wear scrubs and change them on what my mood is for the day or with the changes in holidays. I think it makes the patients see what a difference we have in our personalities. I like wearing cool colors for my pedi patients. I like having choices after getting out of nursing school. :)

I vote for "none of the above". If I'd wanted to wear a uniform, I'd have joined the Army or become a UPS driver. :rolleyes:

Didn't like any of the answers. Wouldn't even want it to be up to 'each employer', other than a dress code policy (which is entirely different from a uniform!).

Nurses come in all shapes and sizes. Some nurses are comfortable in clothing that others find restrictive due to the duties they must perform in their particular jobs, or due to unique physical characteristics.

Not to mention that uniforms generally are overpriced and not even designed by those who will be wearing them.

I Agree!!!!

Up until I graduated from Nursing school, our school had us wearing pinstrip dresses with aprons and white panty hose, now they wear scrubs with lab jackets. ( I helped the instructors come in to the present century lol)

At work, I do think that we should wear scrubs, the patients identify with nurses and uniforms. I don't like that the housekeeping and dietary and all other depts wear scrubs now. But I do like to buy my own scrubs and express my personality in what I wear, seasonal scrubs etc....

The new job I am taking is at a Veteran's home, and they supply our scrubs, I don't like that, but the pay is too good to complain too much, who knows maybe I'll be able to persuade them too...:p

You didn't include what I would vote, which is to basically wear what you want. If my employer provided scrubs/uniforms, and did so in a size that fit me, FOR FREE, I'd wear them. But, as it is, I pay, I pick--that's my motto. I've never had a supervisor complain about my selections so far, so I must be doing ok.

We should be able to pick our own. I do agree that they should be job appropriate and not vulgar. Your name badge is your identification not your clothes.
