Professionalism in nursing!!!!
Ok so I lost my temper with a nurse I was trying to give report to. I work in LTC and to often when I am sending a patient to the ER I get a nurse with an attitude. Today was more than I could take. My afternoon shift started with an event, multiple issues to deal with, new furniture in the building so every resident is either mad, at the desk, or on the call light complaining of missing belongings, plus I am getting a new admit. So then I get a CNA to the desk because the patient has just pulled his feeding tube out. Now first off I am more than able to put a tube back in I have the training and the experience to do this. However our facility policy is that they are to be sent out. So I call the MD and then I call the ER to try and find out prior to transport if he will go to ER or elsewhere (outpatient) to have a tube put back in. I no sooner say to the ER nurse. I have a pt who has yanked his feeding tube out, and she is literally screaming at me. Oh you can put that tube back in, why don't you just go do it! Well I did not scream & I did not curse. Although had she been in front of me she would have been bald! I interuppted her very quickly to let her know in no uncertain terms that I was quite capable of putting the tube in & it would be much less work for me than the sendout & paperwork & her mouth. But I am required to follow policy. She did not have much to say to me then. I did notify my DON of the problem. She was ok with what I did. I am just very tired of ER nurses assuming that I enjoy sending pts to them. It happens to be more work for me it is easier to keep them in the facility & I am fed up with their abuse!!!!!

Im new... i need help. a lot of it! please!!!!
I live in Spring Hill and work in Pasco county. I love the area. It is calmer than the tourist areas but I am close enough to go where I want. I can't tell you about the hospital. I haven't been to it. But if you are going to be in Clearwater you can count on at least a 40 mile drive one-way. Yes housing is cheaper here than Tampa / Clearwater but not as cheap as you think. The housing boom hit here last summer also. We bought our home June 2005 and houses here were selling faster than I could get to them to see.

LPN moving to Florida
I will be moving within the next two months. I have interveiwed with LTC and have been offered three different positions wages starting from 18.25 to 21.25. Good benifits and three months free rent and utilities. They were also willing to pay for me to get my Florida license but I already have that. Just waiting for them to finish my background check.

Where do I take courses?
I took my courses online I believe I took most of them through Nurse Spectrum try this link I still had it saved in my favorites for Florida www.nurseceu.com/mand.htm I took my courses prior to sending in my application. And it took just over a month to obtain my license. Technically you should put your legal address which is where you are now. You will still have to send them a change of address notice when you move. You are not required to sign up with CE broker. I checked into it. I may pay for the service after I move. But it is not mandatory. Will be in the Gainesville area within the next two months. Hope this helps! Best Wishes! smjlpn

Please help -Poll for school - National Uniform for Nurses
We should be able to pick our own. I do agree that they should be job appropriate and not vulgar. Your name badge is your identification not your clothes.

??? Nursing Home ???
Becomming a CNA would be a wonderful experience for anyone considering nursing as a career. You need to know all aspects of patient care. I was never a CNA before becomming an LPN. But I have learned the job very well in the past four years. Nursing is a team effort and it takes all parts off the team to provide care for your shift regardless of what designation you have behind your name. If that means I put a bedpan under a patient or pass ice or feed or turn and dry so be it. Yes my duties as an LPN come first, but my CNAs also know they have someone to help them when needed. Nursing is about respect you want it you give it. Sorry LOL Not on my soapbox Just my view on nursing. Pay varies on location with nursing homes, but as a bonus many nursing homes will help pay tuition toward LPN and RN in return for working for them for a few years after graduation.

State Requirements in LTC
I have been through 4 state surveys now, including one survey where we had state and federal surveyors at the same time. I have met good and bad surveyors, so I try not form an opinion of them based on past experiences with surveyors. I have had ones who treat you like you are an ax murderer and I have had patient understanding people who seem to be able to understand the difference between rigid rules and the human mature of the residents that we care for. The first time I had to do the med pass with them I was very nervous. As we went down the MAR getting the meds out, I noticed on the Miacalcin nasal spray that the nurse on duty the day before me had not signed the MAR. When the surveyor looked to see what nostril to spray she stated right nostril. But that was for the day before. Well to make a long story short. I spent the whole time giving my patient meds trying to figure out what to do. When I got down to the nasal spray I told her you have that marked as right nostril but it is actually the left nostril the nurse yesterday did not sign it out. I gave the spray in the left nostril , when we got back to the med cart she looked at it told me your right and thanked me. We passed our check with no errors caused by the floor nursing staff.

LPN, LTC, Wages, Info Please
Hi everyone! I am an LPN currently living in Alabama. I have already obtained my Florida LPN license. I am interested in info on LPN wages in LTC facilities. I plan to finish up my RN after moving. I am mostly interested in the Pasco, Citrus, Marion county areas. I am origionally from Tampa. But have not lived in FL in 20 years. I have an interview with a LTC facility at the end of this month for possible relocation to the Gainesville area. So any info would be appreciated. As far as I can tell from posts I have read the RN pay seems to be about the same as here. LPN I'm unsure. I currently make $15.18 I need something to compare that too. Thanks! smjlpn
