Online Microbiology

I am a New Mexico Registered Nurse trying to transfer my license to California. The California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN) is requiring me to take Microbiology (which was not required in NM). Does anybody know of any online microbiology courses that are approved by the CA BRN?

I have looked into the University of Phoenix and the 'ISP Program' offered by Southern California University of Health Sciences in Los Angeles. I am currently located in a small town 3 hours away from LA and 2 hours away from Bakersfield so online options are really the best for me.

Thanks for any advice or recommendations!

Welcome!

Thread moved for best response. California is so picky I would check with the board.

I don't know if it helps but I took online Micro through St. Petersburg College in Florida in Spring 2012. Got an A. I will let you look into the approved by CA part. But hey it's a start, maybe...

Wow, I am wondering if I should look into getting a CA license now before they require any more craziness. They are looking at the pre-reqs now too?

Thanks for your reply! Yes they are ridiculously picky! I left them a voicemail that they said they would return in a week and haven't heard anything back from them. I've been calling multiple times a day since then and all I get a is a busy signal so I'm trying to figure this out on my own.

Yes California is awful! I was able to receive my license in New Mexico in three weeks. It took the California BRN one month to open my application and two months just to tell me I had to take Microbiology. Not to mention I can't get a hold of anybody when I call. I wouldn't look in to CA unless you have to or if you are not in a hurry to get your license.

I cannot imagine that you could learn what you need to know in an online micro course, but I am sure you could take it at a local community college an satisfy the requirement? It seems insane to not require micro but then again I am apparently one of the rare CA nurses that did not have to take organic chemistry.

Hi Gradius, was the course all on line, did you have a good professor and were the test hard. Sorry for so many questions, but I'm trying to sign up for a course really soon.

I live in Cali and took my Micro class through Trident University. They have flexible payment plans and was a pretty easy online science class. check them out.

Be warned: If you take any of those Science courses with labs online, your classes will not be accepted at CC or State colleges. Only a few private colleges will accept online Science labs.

Horse puckey. In Maricopa County, AZ there is a completely online community college (Rio Salado) that offers science classes with virtual labs. They're accepted by all the other Maricopa County CCs and as far as I know are part of the transfer agreements with ASU, NAU, and U of A.

I plan to use Rio Salado for as many of my prereqs as I can and have several LPN classmates already taking RN prereqs there.

Some schools in California DO accept online science classes while some don not. So far I have applied to 4 RN schools and they all accepted my online science classes. Just gotta do research and check with your schools.

The online Science classes may be accepted by some schools, but the online labs are not; with the exception of a few private programs. None of the Los Rios District CCs nor Sierra College will accept those, and for certain the State Universities in Ca don't. I would suggest speaking not only with admissions, but also the Science dept.
