I have really done it this time. I started a poll asking about which texts everyone would keep but wasn't sure how to make it multi choice. I hope to have a garage sale soon. Problem is I have too many textbooks, some very aged. But some of those I like so what should I discard? My newest ones are Lewis med surg, Marieb physiology and galbraith pharmacolgy. But I have an old Brunner and Suddarth that I love, there are also Potter & Perry, Phipps & Long, Kozier, Erb & Olivieri. I also have sociology books which I don't want to hang onto. I mean really I should keep one fundamentals and the Lewis med surg. I know it's time for a clear out but I am even having trouble parting with my assgnments. Can anyone help? I can't with any conscience hoik the lot of them because often I just want to look up something and I hate to have no resources.

I no longer have any of my assignments (or not that I know of), but I have not managed to part with my books. I am a book person though. I doubt I will ever part from them. It is nice to have them "just in case" I want to look something up. I think for me it is also a sentimental issue. I just don't want to part with them. (and I am totally not a person that usually hangs on to material things)

I got rid of everything but my lab book, med book, and medical dictionary.

Honestly...I'm an internet person. I can find anything I need online in less time. Even in school I used the internet more than my books if I had a choice in assignments.

So you know though...they don't bring much money used. They put out new editions so often if you want them...and have room for them..you might as well keep them.

I bought my books for $1500...2 years later...I sold them to the school bookstore. They wouldn't even take them all..and for what they did take..I got about $175 total.

I kept mine for several years after I graduated. Things change so rapidly in healthcare though that I finally got rid of them. The internet is a valuable resource and you need to update your drug books at least every couple years.

I sold mine back to my school for some pretty $$ :)

All I kept were a set of review books.

Thanks everyone. I have redone poll. Still your answers are interesting so thanks. The physiology of our bodies doesn't change but the way we treat certain conditions does that's why it's important to be up to date. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone says. I guess when it comes right down to it. i am a hoarder and I'm sentimental.

Don't feel like you have to get rid of your books if you don't want to. Yes, textbooks are constantly being updated, but that does not mean the older ones are useless. You are not going to get a lot of money for them, so if they mean something to you and you have the space, then keep them. Nursing school is a huge accomplishment and all of those books are representative of what you went through to graduate. My MIL was a nurse and never got rid of her books. It is a personal choice. Outdated or not, I will be keeping mine.

I still have everything from LVN school. Lecture notes and hand out are in a container in closet, but all textbooks, work books, and pharm books are on bookshelf. I know that min. I get rid of one of them I will go looking for it as a reference. I also still use them for work when I have to put an in-service together.

my nursing textbooks, every last one, will have to be pried out of my cold, dead hands!!! i have every book from every one of my nurs courses. (other subjects, i.e. bio, chem, history, i did not keep). i even (nerd alert!!!) bought a book that was required of an elective i was not taking nor planning to take for a leisure read. i may not have used every book since graduation, but one never knows with this, our illustrous profession. :thnkg:

as for assignments, i may have some scattered papers and whatnot, but i felt no need to keep those. my grades weren't great despite my obvious geekhood, so those aren't memories i want!

I have not opened any of my nursing school books since graduation. I do keep current and read journal articles in my specialty and anything else that strikes my interest. I also haven't bought a drug book in a few years because our hospital keeps the current data online.

So, if you are not the sentimental sort - sell them and go buy yourself a nice pair of sturdy, water proof shoes. :wink2:

Absolutely keep the phys, anatomy, med surg and lab books. I kept mine and will probably never get rid of them....

:yeahthat:

I've hung on to all of my books, too. I guess I'm sentimental (and paid a lot of money for them 4 years ago!!). However, I have used my Potter & Perry and A&P books several times. Math for Meds and Pharmacology most definitely kept. Micro not so much, or Nutrition either. I've kept Sociology, and I'm not even sure why....

Good luck!
