how many patients

I have been hired at a floor where it is way short staffed, and the ratios are horrible,,I am new to the hospital experience and wanted to know what ratios you all have

I am a PCT on Tele floor and I am responsible for 17 patients!!

How many do you guys have?? What floor??

My facility usually has 2 PCA's per floor on Obs, Med/Surg and surgery recovery, 30 beds per floor (some nights they only have one). ICU has 1 PCA/Secretary with 12 beds. L&D floor has a higher ratio, I think 4 PCA's when full also 30 beds.

That is short-staffed. Our hospital max is 12:1. Thank goodness I usually only have about 9, but I still get behind occassionally with some nurses thinking their pt. has priority over another. Just take ur time and learn to say NO, I can't do that right now, I'm doing ________. Don't try to be a matyr or superwoman and use the bathroom, holding it in is not good for your health. Good Luck!

I'm a PCT on mother/baby unit in Ga. . One PCT per 12 1/2 hour shift. 25 beds on floor almost always full of patients or about 1/2 full, if all beds full then I'm usually doing 50 sets of vitals each round, unless baby is in special care unit

Ha!!THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WISH I worked where you do!! I will remember all your tips!

That sounds a lot like the tele floor where I worked. It only took me 7 months to throw in the towel and admit defeat.

I'm an RN, but our aides have between 12-14 during the day and up to 22 (or more!) at night. This is on an ortho/neuro floor. It's so ridiculous...

Wow, you sound like a kind RN. Our RNs think we are their slaves and have zero respect. a PCT was showing me something (remember I am still orientating!) and this one nurse said "ok, no more teaching I need to talk".....you know what she needed to do???? ask the patient (who spoke no English) what his height was, she could have totally still asked, me and the PCT were not talking to her.

Our pcts have 10-32 apiece depending on how many call ins we get :-/

But if they are short staffed we help with vitals and i&os and stuff.

WOW!!!You are also a very nice and kind nurse, I wish ours helped like you!

1:22 is crazy! Some places are just so hard to work, you can not do your job right however much you try!

yup!!those wards with 14+ patients IS hell!!!and you can NOT do your job properly. It's just not fair to the patient.
