What is it that you most like about nursing? What is it that you most dislike?

I love being able to help someone when they are in their most desperate situation.

I hate GI bleeds, C. diff, and pseudomonas.

I love patient care, and all that in entails. I despise the fact that our hands are tied in so many ways.

I like being able to make a difference. I dislike the non-sense with admin and how they work us to death.

It really comes down to basics for me on this one, too easy. I love looking after sick people and making them feel better. I dislike not being able to look after sick people properly, sometimes not having the time to make them feel better, and all the elements that conspire to cause this which are usually- a) people who aren't sick, b) people in very high places who won't staff / resource us appropriately.

dislikes:

getting up before dawn

constantly being in pain from heavy lifting

ridiculous amounts of documentation

being treated like a servant/dealing with patients' disrespectful attitudes and not being allowed to stand up for myself

going entire shifts without anything to eat or drink

getting sick all the time from being in close contact with contagious patients and then being forced to come to work sick

Love being able to make a difference, see a patient improving, and feeling like a rock star at the end of an especially busy shift where I did a lot and my time management was great that night.

I hate (HATE) the sad cases I often get on my trach/vent unit: child abuse, accidents, etc that steal the life of a child and leave behind a very disabled shell of what they could have been. It's so tragic and there's no easy way to to swallow that pill.

Also, suctioning the prolific secretions of a very sick trach patient who is over about the age of 8 makes me gag behind my mask. I know they can't help it. And somehow the younger kids don't get to me. But when I get a big kid or adult-sized patient who needs frequent suctioning of the nose, mouth, and trach, I just about lose my lunch every time. I have never gotten used to it.

Dislike

-rotating days and nights

-heavy lifting

-jerks...whether it be management, doctors, ancillary staff, patients, families, they can be everywhere sometimes

-high acuity, over census, understaffed

I love critically thinking.

I do not love sputum.......

I like the practical changes I have made for my team of nurses, new products that work, redesign of areas that they wanted.

I hate that they are put at risk by dangerous patients and face aggression most days

Likes: Imparting hope and giving great care, maximizing a patient's potential to heal

Dislikes: Business models getting in the way of good nursing care.

LIKE: helping patients thru critical thinking, hands on care. Being challenged. Ability to work different shifts. Wearing scrubs and casual dress and not having to spend hundreds on business clothing. DISLIKE: female dominated profession. Getting picked on by the other departments (medical, pharmacy, RT, ect). Medication errors. The "nursing shortage" myth. Short staffing and limited resources so the CEO can get a bonus and the corporation can make more$$$.
