i have a major pet peeve about people who are constantly late. there are a few rn's on the floor who have no idea how inconsiderate they are. they are always late. day after day. everyone dreads when this group follows you because you will be late going home because of them.

i come to work on time and am usually early. i leave early so if there is traffic i will be there on time and ready at 7p to take report. we even have nurses who come from canada who can be on time and this group can't even make it in on time.

i cannot tolerate those that bicker about the assignment after being late and procastinating about taking report so that their tired co workers can go home. seriously just take report and bicker with charge after i go home.

sorry had to get that out of my system. i just cannot tolerate people who are late daily and then when you are there early they want you to take report. heck no! if you can't be on time, then i will not relieve you not even 1 minute before 7p.

my first step would be to confront the oncoming nurse directly -"excuse me, i would like to give report so i can leave. please settle this later."

second step would be to go to unit manager and tell them you would like to be paid overtime since you are forced to remain after shift. having to pay overtime should force the unit manager into action, since that doesn't sit well with admin. besides, what kind of manager allows negotiation over assignments on a daily basis? you are being penalized for poor management. last hospital system i worked at had a "clock-in system" that linked directly to payroll. it was located in the report room. you were not allowed to clock in until you were ready for report. anyone who clocked in more than 7 minutes after start of shift was was penalized 15 minutes of pay automatically. worked great.....

Can you tape report? I despise tardiness...one of my biggest of all pet peeves. Lucky for me I work with a really good group that is 99% of the time always on time. We also have a strict attendence policy and we dock 15 min of pay for clocking in 1 min late. We can clock in between 6:38 and 6:45..if you clock in at 6:46 your docked.

Regarding chronically late people, I think it should have it's own mental health diagnosis, and we can call it a disease with very little hope for a cure. :rolleyes:

Chronic lateness is inexcusable in any 24-hour job, where your punctuality determines the end of someone else's shift - I've worked similar schedules outside of nursing. Anyone can be late once, and that's fine - things happen. However, the folks who stroll in at 0701 (or even 0657) on a regular basis have no respect for their coworkers. I'm in a rotation program for new grads, and one reason I don't think I'll stay in my current unit is that the staff culture doesn't seem to respect punctuality and there are no apparent repurcussions for being late.

We have a couple of nurses that are always late - from 5 minutes to once 45 minutes! And they don't even apologize. Just waltz in joking that they are on "jamacan time" so can't get here earlier. Yet when its time to go home they right on time - even if a pt is ringing, they just leave! Luckily, we have written report. As long as there is an RN on the floor - I leave! let their co-workers on that shift (who also find it amusing that these people are late) cover for them.

Lucky for me, we do get overtime for anything over our 8 hours in a shift. Not that I enjoy the late comers....(I'm always at work, printing out my assignment by at least 1445....BEFORE I punch in!)

What do these people put on their time card as their starting time? We don't have a time clock we hand write our time cards and our late people still put 7pm even if they arrive at 7:15p. This is falsiying records and if caught is a reason for dismissal. Most of our tardy people live the closest to work. I would for sure be putting in for overtime if I had to stay over to give report and yes that might make management do something.

We had one nurse who use to be in the float pool and her excuse for being late was that she was on time to check her assignment in the float pool office and then had to go to the assigned unit. Now she is a regular employee on my floor and she is still late.

19 years in the job and only late one shift during that time. I just hate to be late anywhere.

When I worked telemetry/stepdown, I had to give report to one of the day shift nurses and she was complaining about why she had four patients. The ratio on the floor was 3-4 patients to 1 nurse. The only reason she had 4 patients was because the unit was a nurse short for day shift. So she sat there and for over 5 minutes complained about why she shouldn't have to take care of a fourth patient until I raised my voice and said "HELLO I'D LIKE TO GO HOME, DO YOU WANT REPORT OR WHAT?
