which is the most important attribute of an effective nurse?

is it ,knowledge of the theory of the nursing profession, skill in using techniques appropriately ,genuineness and openness, ability to specify a treatment plan and evalute the results...just pic one

and if you can give other idea its ok...:D

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

The aforementioned attributes all carry major importance, in my opinion.

A clinically-proficient nurse might seem icy and distant to his/her patients if he/she does not have a warm bedside manner. In other words, the scientific aspects of nursing are just as consequential as the artistic parts.

Nursing is an art, as well as a science.

The ability to take care of the patient.

Knowledge is good. Being able to put that knowledge into direct action for patient care is even better.

Jen why don't you tell us what you think the most important attrubute of an effective nurse is and maybe you will be able to get a discussion as to why, this will be a far better way for you to learn about nursing and allow you to enter into discussions with your opinions as well

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

If I understand your question it is sort of like the debate I heard all through nursing school as students that were good in clinical but couldn't pass the exams failed out of the program. My thoughts are that as a safe, competent nurse you have to be able to do it all. Being successful in only one area just isn't enough, imo.

Specializes in ER/ medical telemetry.

Many people have different opinions of what attributes a nurse must have to be effective. I really do not know what other folks would think, but this is what I belive one must have to survive our tough world of nursing.

These are just a few of many:

1. A positive, can do attitude.

2. Resoucefulness;if you don not know the answer, find out what the answer is and add it to your knowlege base. Always find an expert, and make them your best friends at work.

3. No matter how bad the day gets, just know the day will come to an end, and a new and better one will be just around the corner.

4. Do not look at difficult patients as "problems" look at them as challenges to overcome. Do your best to help them, not complain about them.

5. Be passionate about what you are doing, care about the welfare of your patients.

6. Be confident, honest and kind. :redbeathe

an effective nurse will apply the science in an artistic manner.

A hide of steel so you will not become discouraged by the many ugly situations and people you will encounter.

Understand that I'm having a tough time right now dealing with lazy, mean coworkers and idiot bosses who play favorites and take care of themselves but throw line staff to the wolves. And self-serving Administrators who focus on customer service and money rather than on getting patients well while not burning up and abusing their staff.

The true answer to your question is that there are numerous attributes that a good nurse must have. Why do instructors play these goofy games and get you to try to pick just one?

Sorry if I bummed you out. I'm just reliving the encounter with the male aide who refused to help a male patient because he thought that to do so was "gay".

Specializes in Family Practice.

Good time management skills & a thick skin.

Specializes in Med/Surg.

"The secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient"

Of course you must have knowledge and skills. But those are Learned

attributes. But if you do not CARE for patients, all people in general,in the long run you will not be a effective nurse. You will just be doing a job. And that makes for a long hard shift (and life)!

Specializes in critical care; community health; psych.

Assuming the nogin is working ok, flexbility is pretty important.
