Has anyone seen...

I would just like to know has anyone ever seen any kind of flying insect in a hospital PICU or NICU or Med/Surg ?

I saw a lone fly last week, and it struck me as REALLY weird, since I hadn't seen one in the year that I've been there! Otherwise, no.

YES, in OR too!!! eeekkkkk!!!! Had a fly come in for a landing on the back table during a total hip--we FREAKED!!!! Construction was in progress down the hall. Never heard such a chorus of language all at the same time!!

Flies, mosquitos, moths, wasps, bees, grasshopper (that one didn't fly very far), lady bug. Never saw a flying roach inside - only the crawling ones.

Our floor was infested. Some weird type of tiny flying insect that only seemed to come out at night. You could barely see them, but they BIT and bit HARD. We'd leave in the mornings with welts all over us. It got so bad we'd wrap from neck to foot in blankets, but somehow they still managed to get us. Nothing was really done about it until a few patients were bitten (most of the critters swarmed in the halls and at the nurses' station)

The hospital shipped a few to an entomology department at the local university and they were unable to positively ID it.

Emmanuel,

UFB (unidentified flying bugs) sent by admin. to further torment the staff... (See? They were mostly in the halls and nurses station)

I killed a yellow jacket in a pts room, by slapping it up against a window. Also there has been ants, plenty of ants. We had a bees nest outside a window and the finally took it down. All of the windows are supposed to be sealed though. I have never seen any furry creatures though, thank goodness. This was on mother/baby.

I've never seen any, but I heard that last week a terminator had to come into our floor because one of our patients clothes were infected with roaches. EWWWWW!

For those who believe in superstition....

I have heard when you see a fly in the unit, a patient is going to die.I cant say that it always happened, but when you saw one, it made you paranoid.

I did always wonder how a fly got on the upper floors of a hospital. I'm talking about those buildings that are like 10-12 floors! The windows dont open, of course, so how do they get in? Do they ride the elevator or what???

The black fly syndrome. In all the critical areas I have worked,we have had one. Who knows? It always did seem to be followed by some type of crisis!

]:nono: Oh yea, ants, real big flies, roaches, and other bugs. Yes a hospital is clean and it would be hard for them to get into the facility, but remember that the pts can bring stuff in c them food, clothes, ect and things can hitch a ride c them.
