Grading scale for Nusing school???

90-100 = A

80-90= B

75-80 = C

below 75 fail.. no rounding, 74.99 and you are out

I was glad to see this thread was already started. I thought my school's grading scale was insane and I wanted to see what others were dealing with. The syllabus (that we had to sign a contract stating we agreed to everything there-in) states that the grading scale is as follows: A: 92-100 B: 83-91 C: 75-82 Anything below 75 and you are out. The director sent out an email yesterday saying that the syllabus is wrong and the grading scale is: A: 95-100 B: 85-94 C: 75-84 F: under 75. This really bugs me as it seems more stringent than most other nursing schools. By the way, this program I am in is LVN and is considered to be one of the top two programs in the state. We are almost done with first semester and even though I am carrying an A in all classes, the news that the cut-off for an A is 95 is very deflating to me. I just do not understand why the range for an A needs to be so much smaller than for a B or C. Plus, if I transfer to an RN program later, if they see a grade of B they may have no idea that I actually earned a 94%! I am thinking of having a meeting with the director to discuss this (particularly in light of the fact that we signed a contract binding us to the rules of the syllabus), but first I need to be very sure of my therapeutic communication skills! lol

Setting up a meeting is a good idea. It probably won't change their policy, but at the very least you can see their reason for picking the scale.

I really don't understand some of these ridiculous scales that other people are posting. I can understand why some schools are enforcing higher standards for passing (80%+); they don't want to graduate a solid C student who might go on to fail the NCLEX and hurt their pass rates. Not that I agree with this, I just can see where the motivation comes from. But why make it so difficult to obtain an A? How do they benefit from such a scale? I have my suspicions, but I have no way of knowing.

My clinical instructor this semester operated on a little different scale...

That is the biggest crock I have ever heard of. Someone needs to look into that

Our clinicals are pass or fail only.

some of our clinicals are pass fail, others are 50% of our grade, and some are a separate class all together. There has been no consistency in our program and one of the reasons we went to the Dean this semester.

As a grad student (I am in a direct entry Masters program for nursing), we have to get at least a B- in our classes. Cs are failing. One C we can petition and remain in the program. Anything more might result being kicked out or held back and repeat in a year.

lowest passing grade is 73 except pharm which is 80. Clinical is Pass or Fail

Clinicals Pass or Fail

in QCC.. You need to get a 74 to pass. The 74 is only 85% of the final grade. The other 15% will come out from the papers, and will only be added when you get a 74 from all the exams and final. Clinical is pass or fail and has nothing to do with the final grade -if you fail the clinical and an A student in theory, you still fail.

A = 96-100.

A- = 90-95.

B+ = 87-89.

B = 84-86.

B- = 80-83.

C+ = 77-79.

C = 74-76.

I go to a community college and I think my scale is 100-90 A, 89-80 B and 79-75 a C. I know for sure that less than a 75 is failing.
